It's about time Tramadol is explained as it is here. I actually ended up with Serotonin Syndrome due to almost a trifecta of death. I was given an Rx for 100mg Tramadol while on the antibiotic Linezolid and SSRI Zoloft. No one at the urgent care I went to bothered to ask what other medications I was currently taking. I went to the Urgent Care because I had severely gotten my Great Toe jammed under the bathroom door. It was bleeding, the nail broke and popped up from the Matrix and the pain was excruciating. I also take Coumadin for AFIB and I couldn't stop the bleeding. All in all it was the most awfully scary thing that has ever happened to me. Serotonin Syndrome is nothing to fool around with.

As a former chronic intermittent pain patient who had been prescribed both tramadol and norco on different occasions - tramadol withdrawals are WORSE than norco or tylenol 3, because of the ssri effect. Never prescribe it if the patient would not be taking it all the time - the withdrawals make it far more dependency inducing than even stronger narcotics.

Tramadol saved my life. I had been taking it for 4 months. It helped ease my mental pain from my accident and gave me less of a body high. During the time of my injury it pushed me out of bed and sustained me mentally during the recovery. From the time I took it in the morning, I would then work non stop for hours all day long. It made me feel comfortable and safe. In the latter end of my 4 month use, I began having strange dreams and decided it was time to quit cold turkey. The mental depression lasted for about 2 weeks of nothing but mental and physical pain. I was worried that I had done permanent damage to my mind. It was a really dark place for me. By the end of the 2 weeks I was much better. It really did help me during a time when I not only need pain relief, but it took my mind off the pain of the situation.

I nearly died from a severe case of serotonin toxicity from 50mg of Tramadol and 50mg of Zoloft. Two doses of the Tramadol twelve hours apart was all it took to drive my blood pressure to over 200, then so low that I had to be given adrenaline to keep my heart going. I also had several seizures, so I had to stay in the hospital for a week. For a few months afterwards, I had pretty severe amnesia. It was really quite scary not remembering what happened 30 seconds ago, but, thankfully, I have most of my memory function back now. A genetic test later showed that I had almost no ability to metabolize Tramadol, and a limited ability for SSRI's. That's why I wish doctors would do that before prescribing a medication.

Doctor-Thank you for this video! I am an example of Tramadol causing EXTREMELY low blood sugar. I have Lupus SLE and back in the 1990s, when I was first diagnosed, I was told Tramadol was safe and non-addicting. This was very wrong, as you stated, because I would have withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea and anxiety if I were to miss a dose. Four years ago, I almost died as my blood sugar plummeted to 11. I shouldn’t be here right now, and if not for my excellent doctors and nurses in the ER, I wouldn’t be. I vowed then to help educate as many people as possible to the addictive nature of tramadol, as well as its hypoglycemic side effects. Thank you for educating people with your exceptional videos!

Tramadol caused me to have a seizure that almost killed me and I was told that it it wasn’t a controlled substance and it wasn’t addictive although, it may cause me to have a “false sense of well being”. The seizure came with no warning and I was so fortunate that my next door neighbor was a MSRN and was looking up towards my house ( it happened while I was pruning my landscaping). I lost my memory for a while and also my coordination but guess what? They didn’t even suspect it was the tramadol so I kept on taking it, I had yet another seizure in the middle of lunch in a busy restaurant. My doctor finally after fighting with a drug rep about it finally admitted that it was know. To have addictive properties and cause seizures. I wish I had sued because of the damage it did to me. Now, it seems like everyone is on it but doctors love prescribing it because of this so called opioid epidemic we’re having. So now everyone is taking tramadol and buying illegal pills for their pain. It’s the most messed up situation I’ve ever seen.

Just found this video. I actually became addicted to tramadol yrs back, after having it prescribed for chronic back pain. After taking it for a couple yrs I suddenly noticed I liked how it made me feel. And I WAS on antidepressants. I did end up having a blackout seizure and that was really scary. I'd also have issues at night where I was cussing in my sleep and kicking a lot. (Bothered my husband as you can imagine.) And I'd suddenly wake up from sleep with KALEIDOSCOPE like swirls in my vision that I couldn't stand. I'd have to open my eyes and stare at my lit phone screen (and it looked like the app icons were glitching) long enough for the weird visual disturbances to stop. And then I could go back to bed. I finally had a sleep study and when they said I showed seizure activity I realized it was related to my 2 different meds. Now that I'm off tramadol (with help from out patient rehab) that issue is now resolved. I do hope more medical staff now know about addiction to this medicine. Back when I was addicted and going thru physical and psychological withdrawal I had a nurse tell me you can't be addicted to tramadol. I wish that was true.

Thank you for doing a video on the dangers of Tramadol. But! But, I would like emphasize the worst one, which you did mention but I'd like to reaaally emphasize this...IT IS VERY ADDICTIVE to many people. Tramadol was originally developed as a anti depressant and unfortunately for some people, it's literally like the missing piece to the puzzle. For me, it was heaven sent. In 2001 I began taking it. It's 2019 and I've been on a methadone maintenance program since 2006, and I've been an addict since the first Ultram I swallowed. I was taking 280 every two weeks. Unfortunately, the Ultram led to Tabs, Oxys, Percocets.....yea. I was told with my initial rx that it was a "non-addictive pain med" so there was nothing to be concerned about- because I had declined a pain medicine because of severe addiction issues with both of my parents- yet my doctor, who was a very good doctor who didn't write a lotta pain meds to people normally, but I trusted him that much more because he wasn't a "writer". Plus I was only 21 and didn't know squat about pain pills- I'd had two babies-one by cesarian-without any pain medicine because I was terrified of it. So it's nice to see some of the myths about ultrams being dispelled. Thanks for your awesome work Dr. Oller!!!!

@@ishouldbesleeping1354 yes, they have cracked waaay down on the doctors who are all about writing prescriptions for narcotics, which is a good thing and a bad thing. I think doctors need way more specialized training for pain management and for dispensing pain meds, so they can weed out whose a fiend and whose in legitimate pain. I am sure the crack down has kept many, maaaany people from getting hooked and that is awesome. been using tramadol for about 9 yrs now for degenerative disc disease in my back along with dextroscoliosis & endplate & facet changes. it's better than taking a heavy hitter narcotic. the tramadol doesn't make you high or anything like that and you can function on it. I take one in the morning & one in the evening, helps with stiffness mostly and minor pain. this after trying everything else otc and prescription and a chiropractor and therapy. it helps me move and sit without being in severe pain. They gave me this because I refused to take percocet or anything like that because I want to be alert, and this stuff works great for me. unfortunately insurance won't pay for it anymore citing the opioid crisis, the fact that they consider tramadol an opiate is a joke because it's nothing like that, but I pay cash for it. great med with no issues, never needed to up my dosage, no problems with it, same dose for almost a decade now.

Tramadol is the only thing my doctor will prescribe me with my pleather of illnesses and pain I have. A lot of doctors are afraid to prescribe others due to the DEA telling doctors how to do their jobs. And then there are drug seekers and they don't want to prescribe, which we have to suffer for their actions. My husband is a retired general surgeon and got in a mess with the medical board for prescribing narcotics. It's a bunch of bs. Those patients were suffering. Most of them had visible illnesses too. Not just the ones that weren't visible. He's so glad to get out of the medical field and doesn't recommend people to seek that profession. It's just getting so bad.

I'd love for you to do a similar video on Toradol. I had one ER doctor give me so much when I went in with kidney stones that I had to be admitted because of near kidney failure. This was after I told him my urologist warned against me taking NSAIDs due to the fact we were trying to figure out what could be causing my chronic stone formation. The ER doctor did not believe it would be a problem. He also wrote out a prescription for over two weeks worth of Toradol. Luckily I knew (thanks to having a pharmacist for a best friend) that this was completely unsafe. I feel more doctors need to be aware just how dangerous that medication can be, just like Tramadol. Thanks for this video, too. I wasn't aware of the connection between hypoglycemia and taking Tramadol. I have been given it for pain for my kidney stones and never seemed to have an issue, but I do have to take glucose tablets at times due to hypoglycemia. Would you like someone to have put cyanide in your food and tell you it was a food preservative? To tell you the truth, good luck coming off of them, you will understand the error of your ways six months after discontinuation.

I've been on tramadol for like 4 years. I've never had a seizure, however, I've tried to stop taking it and the withdraws are so bad you want to die. I use to take up to 10 50mg tabs per day, now I take 4 50mg tabs a day. two in the morning, two at night..if I go like over 12 hours without it, the withdrawal symptoms start to kick in and I have to take one. it's horrible. I've tried weaning down slowly to get off of it, but it's nearly it's nearly impossible. It's a terrible drug to try and stop taking. My advice, never take it. It doesn't even do much for my pain (I have MS) but I take it to avoid the withdrawl..I can't handle it
@thAC0gurl8 жыл бұрын
Not sure what specialty of doctor is prescribing your tramadol, but if its not a pain management specialist I would suggest you see one. All of my pain meds are management by one doc and any additional medicine necessary for other conditions go through him for vetting before I start them so that I can stay safe and keep my pain at a livable level. I'm sorry you have MS but getting a good pain management doctor to manage things can really help you as your disease progresses. Not only will he/she keep you comfortable enough to have good quality of life but they can also be your advocate with other specialists and doctors. My PM doc has gone to bat for me putting the brakes on some of the hare-brained treatment plans some doctors wanted to try with me. Living with chronic pain and chronic health conditions is exhausting enough all on its own. Having one doc firmly in your corner makes life a heck of a lot easier imho. Be well.

I've been given tramadol for ms related pain because I am unable to take any other pain meds. It was not first resort. Ive been on the same dosage for 5 years. It's hard to function without it but I can, I just have a better quality with it. I have no side effects. My concern here is that medical professionals get on these kicks to subscribe medicines ( ie: adhd meds, codeine , neurontin, lyrica antibiotics this list goes on ) then bam it falls out of grace and suddenly no one can be prescribed the medication. I've watched extremely ill patients where I work suffer in agonising pain because it became unpopular to prescribe pain killers after crack down on abuse. These are people who need the meds but now can't get them. Is it to much to ask of the medical community to prescribe on a per patient basis and not on what's popular. What happens if tramadol falls from grace? Can I no longer use it ?
@letterhead20458 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Susan. Neurontin is a terrible drug. Tramacet has never given me any "buzz". I wish I could find a painkiller that gave me a drowsy feeling at least then I could get relief from constant (UNWANTED) driving me up the wall pain.
@canigetahoooyyyaaaaa73197 жыл бұрын
Why can't you use other pain meds? I'm sure you could. If it's drowsiness or something like that go for OxyContin 10mg every 8 hours. It is almost nothing. But will work better and safer than tramadol. Its less potent than a 5mg immediate release oxycodone. People think OxyContin is the devil. Its less potent than instant release pain meds. Depending on the dosage. Please find a pain doctor and give it a try. If they say no then go to the next one.

I don't understand why you mentioned neurontin here because I've been on 1600 mgs every night for nerve pain which only happens at night.If i go without it the only thing that happens is this nerve pain comes back and when I wake up I'm screaming from the pain.

I've known many people who have had horrible problems with tramadol. One of the things that makes it worse than other opioids imo is the fact that it's also an SRI so you get withdrawal from the opioid agonism as well as the SRI effect, which causes many more symptoms than just a straight opioid agonist. I remember when I went to the clinic for pain related to patellofemoral pain syndrome, they gave me 300mg xr tramadol pills. I'd never taken an opioid long term and so I had no tolerance. They also prescribed me cyclobenzeprine, which is contraindicated with SRIs such as tramadol. Luckily I knew better than to take the tramadol.

I have avascular necrosis of both hips. I've been taking 100 mg of Tramadol twice a day for over a year along with ibuprofen. I walk with a slight limp while on Tramadol and barely have any pain but during the times I've run out the pain is excruciating in my right hip. Without it I can't walk without a cane and very pronounced limp. I also start having severe back pain from the change in my gait. My life sucks without it. In the time I've been using Tramadol I've never had any ill effects, never needed to increase the dosage and never had withdrawal issues (other than pain returning) when I've run out and can't get an immediate refill. I have to go to a doctor in another state to get it, doctors where I live will not prescribe it. Hopefully soon enough I will get my THRs scheduled and won't have to be on pain meds at all. Maybe it's not for everyone but for me it is. I've taken other opioids previously and I've had far more issues and negative side effects with them.

However, that bone on bone pain & the groin pain was excruciating! The surgeries are SO WORTH IT! I'm pain free in my hips now. Just an occasional ache but nothing like before. Good luck & I hope you have your surgeries soon!

My dog was prescribed Tramadol for his ear, but I know my dog and if he was in pain, he would either yelp; try to bite (if he wanted to); not let me touch it; not want to sleep on it; not eat and act cranky; or just not want to do anything. And my dad and vet tells me to give it to him. But, my dog is acting normally (although he does tend to scratch at it and shake his head) and not exibiting any of those behaviors, so he's not in pain. I'm sure it feels uncomfortable, but not painful and I don't trust this stuff. I give him the antibiotic that was prescribed with it, but I'm still really iffy about Tramadol. I hate the fact I'm being forced to give him this potentially dangerous prescribed drug, so if anything bad happens to him as a result, I am going to make them feel extremely guilty for it.

true and a great point!!! thank you, and with that knowledge is another tool we have to put in the balance of cost/benefit/harms that we everyday use, in my humble opinion for some patients still beneficial especially in short term use, since as you well said, some people will metabolize it better than others and still does the main funtion of pain killing, at low dossages i will still concider it, of course with the fair warnings that all meds have.

Suboxone you can't get much of a tolerance from Suboxone. Taking more Subxone won't help either. Suboxone has a ceiling effect because it has an anti-narcotic in it. Its completely different than normal opiates because it was made to help addicts get off regular opiates. I do agree that it doesn't help very much with pain because its really weak with the anti-narcotic in it.
@davidsandlin96868 жыл бұрын
+GuerinGrad09 not trying to argue but honestly the naloxone in subuxone has little to no effect on buprenorphines ability to get you high or not. Buprenorphine has a highest affinity to bind on opiate receptor than naloxone and most other opiates. It doesnt get you high because its only a partial opiate agonist and doesnt bind to all the receptors full agonist do. The naloxone is added to deter iv use of suboxone sublingually it is barely even absorbed.

I wish I could send this to my insurance company which is trying to stop covering ANY opioids for Tramadol. My pain meds work. I do not abuse them. It does not affect me in anyway except that it messes up my digestive tract since its a 12 hour med. If I have to use this rather than my current med since I am already hypoglycemic and have had seizures, why do insurance companies play God with our meds? They want to be the doctor. Of course they cannot stop me from taking my same RX but if they won't pay for it they may as well. Big Pharma is against allowing generics of this med. If the pain does not get me the insurance and abusers will. NOT EVERY PERSON abuses their meds. There are literally thousands of people with real severe pain, who without their pain meds could not even walk. Can I send a copy of this to my insurance company doc? I really want them to hear from a doctor who is NOT being paid by them. Thanks,

I agree with you Joyce. I am constantly fighting, appealing, and winning against my insurance re: my chronic pain meds. I've been on the same dosing of the same schedule II and schedule III meds for 14 years with no abuse or diversion and a quality of life that allows me to not be completely disabled/debilitated. But I get SO tired of fighting insurance, going to IMEs and generally having my life disrupted because some paper pusher decides they don't like how much they're spending on me per month. Tramadol was Horrible when I was on it for a very short period of time and I want nothing to do with it ever again. The few times I have gone to the ED for treatment, after getting treated like a junkie at first, then My pain management doc calls and I get demerol & vistaril, or IV valium if its just terrible muscle spasms. IMHO, Tramadol needs to be used in very limited situations, just like Suboxone or Methadone, not handed out wily inly b/c it happens to be the "drug du jour". Thanks for the great video doc!

+Joyce Joseph I was just like you Joyce. I was in severe chronic pain and took opiates like any normal person would because of the pain. I then got addicted to them. Not because I abused them, but because they are addicting. I'm not saying insurance companies should be able to play doctor, but I do understand why they don't want to pay for addictive pain meds. Being in pain is horrible, but being an addict hurts so much more and will kill you. The pain meds stop working after awhile and you just have to keep going up on your dosage. They aren't stopping people from getting them because "every person abuses their meds." They are making them harder to get because so many innocent people fall to addiction every. single. day. I'm sorry your in pain and I hope things get better. I hope this gives you another perspective.

GuerinGrad09 you need to Google the difference between addiction and dependence!! You are WAY off track with what you wrote. Long term chronic pain sufferers who take their opioids as prescribed do not have to keep increasing the dose, many actually over time reduce their doses! I'm a qualified pain management nurse, and I'm a chronic pain sufferer, please get this "addiction" bee out of your bonnet and do some research. Addiction is a psychological want to take the drugs in doses that get you high. Dependence is your body getting used to and somewhat relying on the meds, as the opioid receptors in the body get saturated. A dependent person who doesn't want to be on the meds can usually cease them within 2-4 weeks by reducing the doses till they stop the drug entirely. I know this as I've helped patients come off their opioids in that time frame many times and I've done it myself purely as an experiment and to cut my dose to as low as absolutely necessary. I halves my dose in 2 days and stopped completely in 4 days, using immediate release Oxycodone instead of sustained release Oxycodone, so I could taper the dose down more quickly and easily. Anyone that takes months or longer to wean down or get off opioids (not incl tramadol as although I stopped it cold turkey, I'm now discovering it's not that easy for many due to the SNRI effects of the drug) wants to stay on them and is psychologically addicted, not dependent! Regarding tramadol, I was taking 200mg slow release at night for years, I decided it wasn't really doing anything so I just stopped taking it, but I substituted that dose with 5mg immediate release Oxycodone, so that may be why it was so easy. I now take bugger all opioids compared to what I was originally put on by the pain clinic 8 years ago! I'm on less than a quarter of the dose I was originally on, so please do your research before you start trying to give advice to people, as you are so wrong it's ridiculous!

I injured my leg tore a ligament. I was given Ibuprofen for the pain and that doesn't help. My doctor prescribed Tramadol and I'm on Effexor, Wellbutrin, Klonopin, Trazodone, and prilosec. I picked up my prescription for Tramadol. I asked the pharmacist to tell me the side effects and I asked if I could have serotonin syndrome and they said it could happen but it probably wouldn't. After all I am closely monitored. I was concerned that Effexor and Trazodone could make me have serotonin syndrome but thank God that hasn't happened. I am keeping the doses at least six hours apart. I don't have a tolerance to Klonopin and I've been on it for seven years now and still the lowest dose and it still works. When I first started taking Klonopin it took two weeks before it started working. Every one body chemistry is different. I've known people who take Klonopin and they have been on the same dosage for years and some had to keep increasing their dose. If Tramadol is abused yeah it can be dangerous. If taken as prescribed by your doctor I think that it can be safe.

Instead, they gave me NSAIDS and tramadol for my chronic pain, which does not work! I told them a million times that they don't work, but my doctors keep saying that for my age, opiates are bad for me and this and that....and I'm thinking.... Well, I take an anti-depressant for depression, so taking tramadol isn't going to be good for me anyways....and NSAIDS make your stomach bleed after long periods on use! I understand their concern with younger people taking opiates and what not, but having chronic pain to the point where you can't function in your ever day life and not being able to have anything that helps, but instead wasting money on medicine that doesn't work is kind of ridiculous :(

I’m a 17 year old and I know my parents are addicted to tramadol and they think I don’t know it plus I have a lot of family members are addicts to different drugs and I really feel lost, alone when I found about my parents. But do have any advice for me to deal with my parents?

Dr. For a person that’s being prescribed 80mg a day of Percocet and has wean off to 15mg a day. From what you say: it is better for that person to continue the 15mg Percocet regimen than switch to Tramadol - even though that person has in the pass taken Tramadol with no problems?

They prescribed my dog tramadol and I am livid at this hospital for doing this. They refused to refill my dogs prescription and only agreed to do so of I had him seen again. Nothing has changed! I just had enough for his meds. They had no appointment so I would ha e to bring him in for an emergency visit. I couldn't. So now I am drinking cup after cup of coffee, afraid to fall asleep, watching my poor dog withdrawing off this med. No this doctor is absolutely correct! Tramadol is NO GOOD! NOT FOR A HUMAN OR A CANINE! MY BEST ADVISE....EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE TAKING ANYTHING OR GIVING ANYTHING TO YOUR BELOVED PET!

Ali Vetere , I have witnessed vets giving a old dog tramadol, and all it did was give the dog severe secures. The owners had to eventually put the pet down.

Ali V Give your dog Valerian. Make sure of the ingredients because of the allergy and stuff. My cat was agitated and grumpy I gave him Valerian in his food, he was so chill and Social then he fell asleep

I love Tramadol... It's so much better than hydrocodone... The high lasts for hours...
