Essen and Mülheim are connected by both tram and light rail routes and in 2017 the transport companies in the two Ruhr area cities merged to form the Ruhrbahn.
The meter-gauge tram network is now almost entirely served by low-floor trams, although some of the last Duewag M8Cs can still be admired in Essen. The standard-gauge light rail system was opened in 1977 and runs through both tunnels and streets. The vehicle fleet used here (Duewag B80D and P86/P89 "Docklands") is to be replaced by new cars from CAF from 2024.
With friendly support from the Ruhrbahn.
