trangia spirit burners civilian vs army burner. Fastest of the two! Swedish M40 mess kits x2

Have you cleaned out the "burn holes" on the military with a needle? Did it on mine and it made a huge improvement, cut the boil time with several minuter.

The civilian burner is approximately 1000W and I have calculated on the military version is some where in between 650-700W give or take. they are very individual and my Svea burner is a little faster than Trangias version of the military burner. Also the pots are very different they differs in weight so there may be different amounts of steel that shall be heated up so when trying to calculate the difference in effect of the military burner one should use the same pot for every burner. But there’s so big difference between the civilian and military burner so eventually difference between the pots doesn’t matter. One thing that surprised me was that the stainless pots was faster than the aluminum pots. I thought that aluminum had better heat conduction but the stainless pots are probably thinner than the aluminum so they wins the game 👍

The ali pot gets rid of heat faster than the stainless. The stainless is not thin- I have one.

Hi , just caught your great little video. Just wondering if you repeated the test by swapping the burners around , so they tested the effects of aluminium against stainless steel again and if the change of pot returned results with a different boil time ?

@@zufuss Thank you for your compliments of the season. However , I must point out to you that in this case you are wrong. I've been in the army surplus business for many years and am well acquainted with the Swedish Army mess tins and trangia cooking system that you tested, The set on the left, with the curved bale handle and smooth sides all the way to the top of the big pot is made of very high grade, dense, aluminium. The set on the right , with the "flat" topped bale handle and a indented rim about 1 " (inch) (25mm) from the top of the pot is stainless steel. Historically the stainless steel sets were produced during World War II when Sweden had lots of stainless steel but aluminium was very expensive and in short supply as Sweden was supplying both sides with aluminium, primarily for their aircraft industries . Dave Canterbury, the american bushcraft bloke, was so impressed with a stainless steel set that he acquired, that his "Pathfinder Store" now sources his own brand copies. The aluminium sets were produced after World War II when there was reduced demand for aluminium and they are made from really high quality aluminium. Two quick checks you can do to prove me correct is; 1. Scratch the metal and you will see which is which. 2. Weigh the mess tins and observe the difference in weight between the two, the stainless steel set being heavier. Alternatively, you could try googling the subject. Apologies for going on a bit but I thought a more thorough explanation might be of intrest to you, all the best.

Both of these kits looks like the stainless steel ones, aluminum have 2 grooves from the top and these only have 1, you can also see that the handle is not bolted on these, they are on the aluminum kit The aluminum also (often) look very clean and almost white, at least all I see for sale​@@clivedunning4317

Fascinating. Steel versus aluminum is a factor. Sometime putting a metal plate under the burner helps heat the burner up faster in the winter, like a metal dish plate. The distance of the flame from the bottom of the pot, many factors come into play.

Something I've heard but haven't tested is that the military version has a shallow groove on the outside of burner nozzles, legend has it that you can put a small amount of alcohol there to get it to fully bloom faster. Technically stainless steel should have less losses as it doesn't radiate away heat at the same pace as aluminium, however painted (or sooty) surfaces probably negates that effect.

I remember some swedish soldiers poke larger holes in their burner for better output/faster boil... not sure if it actually works, poking larger holes may lead to larger risk of leaks as the o-ring will have a harder time to seal. I'd reason that if you want higher output you need to lead more heat down into alcohol to hurry up the alcy-boiling. I'd venture a guess that the smaller/civ Triangia burns faster because the smaller container has an easier/shorter/effective thermal path to lead heat down to alcohol -thus increase boil-off.

Sorry for a silly question. If the civilian burner is better why doesn’t the Swedish army use it? Or is the civilian version more modern compared to the military version which has been replaced by eg a gas or hexamine stove?

Thank you for your question 👍🏻 not silly at all! To be honest I don’t know what type the Swedish army has in this day and age. I don’t think they use the M40 or similar type anymore, but I don’t know for sure. And I think you are right about the civilian type to be more modern but I don’t know for sure. I think they probably use this Optimus/Trangia set up now... it comes with 2 billy pots, a pot stand and windscreen, a pot gripper, an alcohol burner, and a fry pan/plate... it has a strap to nest it all together. You have the opportunity to use the alcohol burner, or, maybe an x2 burner... it's such a good system, the Chinese have a knock off of it!

I paid all my pots pans underneath bottoms black I can't get high heat temperature paint and paint them all black they give more heat and if they were just bear aluminum or stainless steel and conducts more heat

The pink stuff is a household cleaning product for rust and all types of metal. All my camping pots, canteen cups are like bran new. The pink stuff removes all grim and camp fire soot and soot from the Trangia. Hope this helps.

@@zufuss you are going really like this stuff. It has a nice aroma too. Advice: it does leave a slight residue on cooking pots and canteen cups. Not to worry as hot soapy water removes it instantly. You just have to get used to how it works. You’re welcome.

Was hoping that the military one would be good, as in my opinion the civilian one is useless. Tried them with all the different fuels, all weathers, and can't live with them.

@@zufuss I would say good for a day out, take a single burner with fuel in, inside a coffee mug, but even then if its really cold then NO.. I do use the storm cooker set with a gas adapter when me and my dog camp, which is good in the tent vestibule due to it being very stable. However it irks me a bit when I see Trangia fans lying about boil times.
