In the United States... when ever an airplane (civil or military) makes a maiden (first) flight or Retires (final) from flight the airport fire crews shower it with their water hoses. It's just long standing tradition that goes back to U.S. Military but has also been adopted by civilian organizations too. Since the was the first trip to LA by Transaero, they got "the shower". Just a ceremonious tradition.

Wow the Russian crew must of had a great chuckle as they roared down 24L and climbed away from LAX headed for home after the brain fart from the controller with Transaero's destination .. "Uniform Uniform Delta Delta!! where the heck is that?? well I better ask the crew" .. LOL awesome
