Sparks as soon as the mains touched down. Starboard main gear was down and locked, nose gear ditto, portside gear didn't do what it's supposed to. Down but not locked, maybe? I was in an Airbus that had a landing gear caution light up on approach to O'Hare many years ago. Nose gear on that plane rotates 90 degrees after it extends, then locks down. Pilots and tower couldn't figure out at what point it had failed, so we got to burn off fuel for a while, then made the softest, gentlest landing I've ever felt. Except for the engines shutting down out just before the nose gear touched (on purpose, but eerie). Turned out it had extended fully and locked, but the nose gear steering had failed. So we got a tow to the terminal.

Very nice job landing a heavy aircraft with landing gear issues. It's unfortunate that the co-pilot ended up falling down the escape ladder rather than climbing down it, hopefully they're not too badly hurt, other than their pride. It seems the crew judged this one very nicely, having circled for an hour to burn fuel and then taken the decision to land still with another hour of fuel on board, which is brave and not entirely according to training, but by doing so they have given the airport authorities a chance to clear that runway and inspect it before the daily passenger traffic becomes too dense, thus minimising the disruption caused by their mishap. That takes balls and a lot of situational awareness...

@ETOPS OK, thanks for that. Maybe different countries handle these things in different ways, also? Just seems like I've seen other similar videos where the truck trying to keep up, but on the sidelines.I'll check that video you mentioned.

Don't agree. They were there fast. You could see them as the plane was landing but they have to wait till it stops moving as you never know what it might do.

Good thing that was a 767 and not a DC10/MD11 [ The later have a sad history of rolling and breaking up many times when the gear fails like that] Great catch, glad noone was hurt!

Dont like the emergency action. It took a long time to be there and they do...nothing, just looking though there windows. No water for the left engine to cool down. The pilot is injured because he tried to escape via rope, which was unnecessary, the nearest vehicle would have offered stairs. Two people dragged him several meters and give it up, but no ambulance.
@heidiscott43634 жыл бұрын
Too paranoid y did he do that?
@quantifygg4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there could have been stairs, but sparks flying from a cargo aircraft aren't exactly considered safe. It could have been carrying hazardous cargo that serves a fire risk too, like Li-ion batteries...

They picked up the rest of the crew with the cherry picker. The one who came down the rope looked to have damaged his ankle. The guys did a great job. A really minimum speed touchdown.

@@TrFusion Potential misjudgment? Perhaps. But at that moment that appeared to be the best choice for the FO and therefore it is irrefutable. Will this be looked into for a future scenario? Yes. But is it right to accuse the crew of misjudgment in a perfect landing? I disagree.
@delukxy4 жыл бұрын
@@quantifygg Other comments here state that there are no slides on this aircraft, being cargo specific. Rope hatch said to be underneath which I agree would have been not much good if the whole fuselage was on the tarmac. Here there appeared to be one out of the cabin windows but they are very small. We need a pilot here to clarify things

These guys did a great job gently putting it down on that engine pylon. The last fedex flight that had a problem, the crew was killed and the sole passenger got stranded on a deserted island for 2 years before he was found.🤔

Imagine being the pilots for that a330 and 747 when suddenly a plane goes through an emergency landing and stopped right in front of them. "Errrr... ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain, we might have to delay our take off.... there's a plane in front of us with a missing landing gear"

Guess there were snakes on the plane? Why would you unnecessarily jump otherwise?
@quantifygg4 жыл бұрын
They train for this, if they were carrying fire-hazard cargo it would definitely be the right call when sparks were flying.

@beside myself as soon as they came to a stop I saw neither sparks nor smoke or flames. Everything seemed pretty calm until someone fell out of the cockpit.

As an aircraft mechanic who is trained on engine run and taxi on large cargo planes, I think about this every time I go take a plane out to taxi, and I brief the other occupants on what to do in case of fire. Bottom line, if it catches fire, the escape rope is going to be my last resort. It's not as easy to climb down an escape rope as they make it sound. There's a good chance you're going to end up like this pilot, seriously injured from a fall and unable to walk away from a burning airplane. Still, I don't wonder about why he did it. After a successful emergency landing, his adrenaline was probably still pumping, he was eager to get the heck out as quick as possible, and he fell back on his egress training and went for it. Thankfully the other two occupants were a little less eager, perhaps from seeing the captain fall.
