Alan Yeung, MD, discusses Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to treat aortic stenosis. This minimally invasive procedure spares patients from the traditional chest-opening approach of valve replacement. Dr. Yeung talks about outcomes, particularly in the Asian population, where the incidence of damaged valves is on the rise due to increased life expectancy.
Alan Yeung, MD, is a world-renowned interventional cardiologist and the Stanford University School of Medicine Li Ka Shing Professor in Cardiology.

Dr Young, show me the successful number of elderly people who went on to live a better life after a TAVR procedure. Strange that I have not heard about this procedure in about 5 years now, at one time it was talked about even on TV about how great it was. My mom passed away one month after having TAVR surgery. I had doctors admitting to me that it was a clinical trial at that time and the success rate was not high. Maybe after 5 years it has improved. I hope so for the many people who are counting on a better quality of life after the procedure. Im a retired RN, I know open heart surgery after a certain age is very risky, so they turn to alternative treatment. I hope this procedure has improved for the people who need it.

It's less than 2 weeks before I get the Edwards valve on a Thursday. I'm 80 and cannot wait to go home on Saturday morning.

I have aortic regurgitation, but not due to stenosis. This is only about stenotically damaged valves. What about aortic valves not damaged by stenosis? Wish you had addressed this group as well, or had more completely titled your presentation.

Be aware TAVR is dangerous, my mom and a few more people who were in pretty good shape for their age need a new valve. Not one lived more than a month after the procedure. Don't see it advertised on TV anymore about how successful it is that's because it's not.

Everything that I have seen, it has at least 5 years of success. I'm 80 and I cannot wait to recover from my symptoms. If I need another in 5 years, I'm up for that. BTW, who advertised it? I've never seen an ad.

@@anonemouse3768 TAVAR was all over channel 2 at one time, lots of commercials on how wonderful it was. It was removed I would say about a year ago. But before that it was really out there on TV for a long time. I wish you the best of luck with your procedure. Keep in mind my mother just turned 90 at the time of her TAVAR surgery that was 6 years ago and her aortic stenosis was severe.

Fantastic informative talk Dr. Yeung! Thank you so much for doing this. I'd be interested to know real experiences from people who have had this procedure as my 60yo mother might be undergoing this soon. How was your experience? How do you feel now? Any complications you faced? Thanks!!
