I have always wanted to try out in car dashcam. No particular reason really. Just felt like real product. I finally got one to test.
Here you will find my review with thoughts on product as well as (most importantly) sample footage in daylight, night time and mixed conditions.
Overall great product. But for my take on it - do view the video.
More on the product here, on manufacturer's website:

I purchased one last week, fitted it into my car and I think it's great ! It will be a theft target, but I take it with me - just unplug the mini USB and slide it off the windscreen bracket - Easy ! Recommended !

Thanks for thumbs up. I suggest to add some electrical tape around shiny bits and even a "fake" or two hanging out over the LCD. You can then try leaving it in the car, I doubt anyone would go for that. Just don't cover much of mic port or other essentials.

Conclusion very helpful. I would not have known the negative features before buying - especially a removable mount. Therefore will continue to look for a device with anti-theft features at around the same price. Thank you!

You are welcome Malcolm. To be honest with you I am without the device for few months now and I miss it. Even though I had it just for few days. The negatives are easily overcome. Besides, not much out there on the market anyway. Plenty of devices granted but all with similar features, nothing outstanding. I just hope Transcend will release V2 this year. Otherwise I might go back to this device. I think value for money is there considering current market and offerings.

I can't say the points were invalid though. I do think it is obvious and it might attract unwanted attention to the vehicle. Its a fact. There are 2 other options - mask it out making a bit ugly but at the same time unattractive for others or unplug every time you leave your car.

Thanks very much for the review. I just have a question if i may. I would use this my car and i think it would be fine, but does it need to be plugged into something all the time when recording? For example i would like to take this on a bus and record my trip (as a passenger) so could i record it straight out of my pocket with no wires? Thanks Eamon

You need constant power source. You can use the power bank that has USB out for charging phones etc. It would work just fine but not without it. Otherwise - GoPro.

Further to my previous comment I have found a suitable mains to 12v dc supply unit to run the Drive Pro 200 indoors. That is so much easier to do than struggling in the car. It really should come with such a device included. (Also have a dry battery inside to maintain the clock settings for more than a few days!) Thanks to your excellent KZbin video I have now been able to fully understand what the buttons do in all the various modes. I will also upload a video to fully describe what I have discovered from my point of view. Naturally I will recommend your video to watch too! Thank you.

***** Yes, we do need something like this to fully use the unit. I have been able now to determine there is an intermittent fault with my Drive pro 200, only recording something times even though the rec light and the picture is always displayed. I have told the manufacturers and am awaiting a reply.

Good review. But I'm just thinking wouldn't you just in clip the camera when you leave the car and quickly clip it back on when you're back? It's a bit annoying it won't work for say half an hour or so with an internal battery. Also if the proper intended holder was used maybe it could be angled to show just the road. The reviewer mentioned wanting to show his hands on the steering wheel but he never showed or caught this on camera anyway and I don't see how he could. Any camera will struggle to differentiate between a darker lighter foreground object and background object. I thought that was the intrinsic nature of how cameras worked. But the quality of this is far far good enough for proof of liability of any accident.
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 9 жыл бұрын
+Rob D well noted. I did few reviews of Transcend's 220 and 520 units. Both really nice pieced of hardware to use. This time I did have them positioned properly and the footage does reflect this. Also I believe Transcend did work a bit on this issue since not all cars would show the same amount of bonnet / road / sky. As for leaving it in - I leave it in anywhere I stop over once it is public but not too exposed. Once I park at the house I always take it with me. Not a big issue.

Unfortunately it does not have any battery internally. It might have small capacitor to keep time etc but that's all. No need to charge it at all. But at the same time to run it without the battery you do need external one powering via USB.

@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Wright people watching this and similar videos would agree. Not everyone though. Depending on the country there is a big enough percentage of people speeding and otherwise ignoring rules of the road or simply not knowing them. Others would have privacy concerns - eg. your partner or work colleague finding out you have "veered of course". These are just few obvious examples why would some people oppose this idea. I believe in coming years we will have more and more manufacturers taking share of this market. Cameras are getting smaller and more importantly requires less power and offers decent performance for lower and lower cost. There are big markets like China, Russia and India where these cameras are getting more and more affordable and popular. In some cases required. Hopefully they will help to drive the prices down and bring innovation.

Eds drafts Wow! Thats strange about the cost! In India Blaupunkt DVR BP 2.0FHD costs around 4k INR, Transcend Drive Pro 200 about 8k INR and Drive Pro 220 about 12k! After going through all the reviews for all of these, on KZbin and Amazon etc shopping sites, I am more inclined towards Transcend.

+Vaibhav Gandhi I got the Transend in the end, I was very aware of how "expensive" it looks in the window, so I have wrapped it up with black insulation tape to hide the chrome lens. The last thing I want is a broken transit van window to take a small inexpensive camera. I'm amazed that the manufacturers thought this was the right way to go... Yes it looks nice, but that would be great for a compact camera to take to birthday parties, not sit outside in vehicle in full view.

Excellent review, although you didn't take the time to fully explore and inform about some of the finer points of the adjustable parameters (exposure for example). Regarding the possibility of theft, I would hope that anyone with common sense would detach the unit from its mount after parking. I just got mine today and tested it: daylight video is actually very good, but as I live in a rural area I found the unit to be lacking somewhat in image quality with the preset settings in low light conditions. I may have to adjust exposure in order to remedy the lacking in quality of video in such conditions (relying solely on headlights for light). Thus far I found this unit to perform as advertised and am quite satisfied.
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, good feedback and a welcome one. You are right, I didn't spend too much time adjusting the settings. For daylight I have noticed that it is best if dashcam does not point too high as bright sky might lower the brightness of overall video making road and other dark objects nearly black. But that is only in extreme cases. As for night - yes, not much to say there, quality good but not amazing. I personally found the unit overall a very good value. Of course I would love to see continuous progress and better performance in low light along with 4k. As for theft I always do the same to prevent it. You can also spray the body with matte black paint but even smallest item in a car can attract unwanted attention.

Do you think this would be suitable for a taxi driver? I just wonder if it is capable of recording for 12 hours or more a day, 7 days a week. Perhaps I would need a much higher capacity memory card than the standard 16GB?
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 10 жыл бұрын
I would say it would be. You do not need a bigger card as you can choose eg. 1min clips and once the card is full - it starts rewriting from the oldest one. Also if you need you can lock certain clips by pushing button or using G sensor. Even 2GB card would work fine.

Thanks Mark
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 9 жыл бұрын
Charging only USB lead is not that popular but it is essentially "disabled" USB cable that provides power only and no data transfer. This way you can do anything you wish with the device. Also you can use the external power bank aka battery to power it up with any USB cable since the battery has no data interface anyway.

Missing pricing in your review. Of course it would be nice to have 4K recording with 60fps and hardware protection. But my guess is that this will make the item 10 times more expensive. I have this item myself and for the price it's on the market now I think this is a very good camera compared to the competition.
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 10 жыл бұрын
Price / performance Vs competition is not bad. However nothing innovative. This is what disappoints me. Just another one in the crowd. Hardware lock and 1080p with better auto levels would be just fine just in slightly smaller form factor or less flashy looking. 4k is great but not required just as I mentioned in the video. Also this is what I would look for in future. 4k is not that much for eye candy as for legal purposes. 1080p is not quite enough in low light to make out the reg of other cars.

Vairis Kremanis Unfortunately there is not much on the market that would be better for the price. You could obviously go for OEM products and professional installation but this would cost too much to be worth it in my opinion. Just go for this unit, use it for a year or so, don't leave it in the car and see how it goes. If you get tired of doing this you can always resell it. Units like this don't drop in price much.

A lot of pro photographers who use very high end cameras, wrap the cameras in duck tape. This is purely to make it look crap. This stops the some opportunist thiefs from picking it up and walking away with it. If this was wrapped in black duck tape it would remove the magpie shines element. I think this product should have a small remote camera that plugs into this box, and even a second camera for rear and it would be perfect.
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Wright agree on second camera. Would especially be good for reversing. My ideal future proof kit would be 1080p front and rear cameras with recorder unit separate and hidden. It would be icing on the cake if wireless 12V car powered monitor came with the kit. Ideal for recording for insurance purposes and for driving / reversing. Saw similar kit, think price was around €300. A bit too steep to be used widely.

Good review. The thing I fear the most is someone hitting my car while I'm away from it, is there any way to keep it running while the engine is off? Then there is the fear of hiding the thing, no way would I leave it exposed. I have thought of crazy things like taking the stuffing out of a teddy bear's head and using the eye as a lens etc LOL. Any suggestions, or is there any good camera that records in the event of a shunt when car is parked? Do I detect an Irish twang? :D

Thank you. Good question. You can wire it up directly to the circuit so it would always be on, yes. It does require some electronics knowledge though. As for visibility there is no way to easily hide it. There is model 100 now that I reviewed just a day ago. Not as flashy looking but performs the same. Should be cheaper as well due to some feature cuts etc. In all fairness any tech that can be easily taken from the car is at risk. No easy way out... Yep, I am in Ireland :-)

***** fair point. I didn't install it fully into my car since I would not be comfortable leaving this recorder on. As such I saw no need to open all panels just to show, sorry. But yes, it would be a good video to do. Maybe later on, when I get recorder that is small and capable. I am waiting for decent low light 4k capable device (ideally 2 communicating or synchronizing somehow, maybe recording wirelessly into "hidden" recorder box) for under €150. I know currently it is a lot to ask. But give it a year or two and such devices will be on the market, and not only from grey market but also reputable brands (like Transcend in this video).

Having purchased one of these I discovered that the date setting will only stay correct if you use the car most days. I don't, and find the date and time wrong virtually all the time I use the car which is very annoying! Also it does not come with a lead allowing you to run through and get to understand the buttons indoors in good lighting away from the 12v car supply. I have found a lead from a camcorder video output does allow you to do that, powering from the computers USB connector. Currently I also have a problem that it does not always make a recording. I don't know why just yet. Sometimes it ignores a complete journey , sometimes records just part of it even if the engine has not been stopped . There appears to be plenty of unused files onto which to make recordings. Also I don't know yet how to unprotect a file to make it available for loop recording. I can't find any FAQ facility on the manufacturers website even though the manual says there is one.which is frustrating!

Sorry to have to amend what I wrote above but that lead only allows transfer of files into the computer. You cant use the buttons. That is a shame as its rather awkward using then in situ in the car.

ADMIRALSCORNER You can learn the device by using mini USB cable that you can plug into USB charger that you might have around. Most phones use them. That way you can try out the device indoors. But yes, the unit has its faults and in my opinion biggest one is size. Its too obvious. I just wish car manufacturers started thinking more seriously about these cameras.

Thank you for replying. When I used my ex camcorder cable to supply power from the computers USB connector it set the drive pro to computer connection mode and I couldn't use the four buttons. Perhaps it needs a separate USB supply device like the white one you were using. What is that called and where did you obtain that I wonder? I agree with you regarding it being too obvious inviting theft but I did find that removing it from the mount does take a while to work out how to do that! The more I get to understand mine, the more I believe it has an intermittent fault in only recording sometimes. I wonder how I will get on trying to convince the supplier!

To try from PC you need power only cable. It is basically USB looking cable but with certain contacts not enabled making it only to receive power and not to transmit data.

Eds drafts Yes, thank you again. Without your video I would still be struggling with understanding the all features of the camera.

148 F is awfully hot. I am never in my car if by any chance it is that hot then most times it is in a garage with a 18 foot wide door that usually stays cool enough. It is not quite wide enough for 2 cars unless you like to carefully squeeze in but wide enough that you won't nick your paint walking near it.

+John Doe unfortunately not everyone is lucky to have a garage. Where I live there is no garage at all and not even an option to get one. Fortunately Ireland is cool enough for this. But if you were in hot country like Thailand, Mexico or somewhere in Middle East, this should be considered.

Eds drafts Ireland is nice. I was on a week long tour of the Ring of Kerry in April 12 years ago. The weather was nice but not hot. My sister was over there for a year on a scholarship with Robert Morris University. My Aunt took us over for that week long trip at the end to have a nice trip to Ireland and take her home. I would do it again, it was fun. We all had Guinness too.

Sometimes I dislike weather here but all in all it is perfect when you are working and it is not roasting or freezing. It is always below 20 Celsius here but above 0 :)

revadan I had no issues as I used it for short time and in cold weather. Having it running in hot weather might have issues. After all some plastics melt under sunlight in the vehicle so all is possible if exposed to extreme weather.

Dear Eds drafts, many thanks for your informative video! I have had my DrivePro 200 for several months now but viewing the recorded files in the car can be a pain! Can you tell me please exactly what make of portable battery pack you used (it sounded like Anker) and what are its output values and charging rate? I have the Transcend iPhone & iPad apps but was concerned about the jumpy playback but you mentioned something regarding file dropping over wifi so maybe that's my problem! Worthy of note is that my iPad will not now connect to the Transcend having just upgraded my IOS to IOS 8 so Transcend need to upgrade their software to account for this! Finally, I never leave the camera fitted in the car whilst not in use and the supplied windscreen mounting bracket is excellent! I have mine fitted as close as possible to the rear view mirror such that the bottom of the camera is virtually level with the mirror! Many thanks, alanp1@no3

Yes, I do use Anker. It can provide up to 8A in total if I am not mistaken. Good to charge few phones and a tablet at the same time. However, choppy playback might be due to WiFi issues with the device. I have noticed this as well. Not many devices transmit HD video over WiFi properly. Except obviously higher grade ones like laptops, PCs etc.

If you leave it hanging from your windscreen at night on a street then you deserve to have your car broken into. Leaving it in through the day in the middle of a town or city, no-one in their right mind would smash a car window and try to steal something without being seen in broad daylight, so it's simple.. when you're at home either parked on the street or in a drive-way, take it out of the car. That's not a downside of the product it's the stupidity of the owner. Also, if you're involved in a crash or a pedestrian damages your car whilst recording, 720/1080p is more than sufficient to be able to see what's just happened and show evidence to the police.. 240p yeah I could understand wanting better quality, but 4K is pointless unless you're shooting a movie with your car.

so you have to mount this with a sticky pad !!!!!! pointless
@Edsdrafts
@Edsdrafts 9 жыл бұрын
Syman UK you can use suction cup mount or sticky pad. For latter option you can obviously remove the device by releasing plastic clip on the mount leaving it on the windscreen and taking the recorder with you.
