what if the hdd doesnt show as external device in disk utility? does it means it cant read it or not compatible?

if its not readable then it means its not formatted correctly. Kindly redo the process again.

go to finder and change the preference settings, make sure to tick the external drive. this will solve the issue.

For windows, its software is in-build so no need for a format.
