Just kegged my lager this way after watching this video. I have had the orange cap and carbonator cap for a few years and never got around to using it. This was easy and a great method to eliminate oxygen from your finished beer. Thanks Brian. Cheers, Chris

What PSI did you use to rack from glass carboy to keg? I get nervous with anything over 2 psi in glass

Works well! I just recently started transferring my beer this way. The nice thing is that it works without gravity. If you have a beer that you would prefer not to disturb, this method is amazing at minimizing the trub you would have stirred up by moving the primary.

Great video once again! Thinking of doing this with my next NEIPA batch. Could you tell me if this is the right process for beer to keg transferring? 1. Sanitize the keg with sanitized water. 2. Purge the water out with CO2 at two to three PSI through the IN of the keg. 3. Remove the keg cover, force more CO2 in to let all the oxygen out, since CO2 is heavier, oxygen will be forced out 4. Drop the racking cane into the beer and transfer the beer with CO2 Also would it be better if you didn't take the keg cover off and transferred the beer through the IN of the keg? Also What do I connect at the OUT when I am purging sanitized water out?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers4 жыл бұрын
Leave the keg lid on. I would just open the pressure valve and transfer in via the out post and fill the keg from the bottom up. 👍🍻
@scottstoyan53794 жыл бұрын
So in your video you talked about just inserting the hose into the keg, can you attach attach the ball fitting to the liquid out line of the keg and fill from there as long as you unscrew the pressure relief valve? This seems like it would be a cleaner way to go
@ShortCircuitedBrewers4 жыл бұрын
Sure you can do that too. 🍻👍

@ShortCircuitedBrewers4 жыл бұрын
Sure as long as it has a decent seal. 👍🍻
@LostArkitekt5 жыл бұрын
Two things. First, I'm not sure if you are just doing this for the video, but it seems weird to sanitize everything and then let it touch surfaces and your hands. Next, if you put some sanitizer in a carboy and then put a 1/4" swivel fitting on the end of the racking tube, you can do the same trick with the keg, but run the sanitizer (first) through the LIQUID OUT post on the keg. Then, drop the black quick connect fitting in some sanitizer until you get ready to rack and rack through the liquid out tube in the keg, keeps from having to drop another tube in there and you can have the keg closed with just a PRV open to let the air/CO2 out.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers5 жыл бұрын
LostArkitekt sure that would work as well. Hands are sanitized as well. But I see your point 👍🍻
@wichitasid7 жыл бұрын
if you add a liquid ball lock connect on the end of your siphon then you can rack to your keg without having to open the lid. Just put the prv in the open position and you should have little to no oxygen exposure.
@ShortCircuitedBrewers7 жыл бұрын
Sid Taylor yep! Cover that in another transfer video I did after this one.
@jiffypop20107 жыл бұрын
couldn't you use a second racking cane and carboy cap for the secondary transfer to even further limit the amount of potential oxygen contamination?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers7 жыл бұрын
Yes you sure could, you can also use a liquid "in" fitting on the keg and leave pressure relief valve open while transferring to keg. Depends on how far you want to go.. Great question. Cheers!

Great video. 2 questions because I want to try this method. First, does the C02 leak around the rubber cap? Second, how much C02 is used to complete the process based on a 10 lb C02 tank? Thanks!
@ShortCircuitedBrewers5 жыл бұрын
It will leak if you apply too much pressure. As far as how much is used, I'm really not certain. I don't think it is very much honestly. I have not weighed before and after. It works well though.. 👍🍻

Are you predominantly using glass carbouys for fermentation? What about 10 gallon batches have you any experience with SS bucket fermenter 14 gallon? I'm retiring in 4-5 months and want to get set up to do 10 gallon brews. Thanks Brian Hunt

Nitrogen to push beer? I have thought of using it for that. Have not thought of using it for transfer after fermentation. Do you know of any benefits? 👍🍻
@RaymondMillbrae6 жыл бұрын
Short Circuited Brewers - Just thought if you were using nitrogen instead of CO2, that you would use it for transferring everything in a “closed system” as well. Just curious what you thought about nitrogen. I’m pretty new to home brewing, and I can get my hands on nitro tanks (and refills) for free. Thinking-our my new system before I start building it.

Hi, it’s interesting that you blow bubbles when finished transferring to secondary. I’ve always heard that splashing messes up the beer (from oxidation.) Since your getting the oxygen out, does it not mess the beer up?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers4 жыл бұрын
The bubbles are all co2 not oxygen.

Hi I’m a first time fermented me and my dad started the fermentation process of homemade cider in a plastic tube designed for fermentation it’s been about a week and a half is there any way to check the bucket cause it is not clear so how would I tell if it’s ready I have a racking cane and siphon tube but no co2 or the caves with two holes but I have a glass flask and it had a rubber bung what should I do
@ShortCircuitedBrewers6 жыл бұрын
Can you just crack open the lid?
@Chrisbuildsstuff2476 жыл бұрын
Is it okay to do that will it oxygenate the cider I’m very knew to this this is my first batch ever
@ShortCircuitedBrewers6 жыл бұрын
Cider is not as susceptible to oxygenation as a beer with hops in it so you would be okay to pop the lid open and see if the fermentation is done without any adverse effects. Congratulations on your first journey into fermentation!

Absolutely Kendal. The principal is the same. The less you expose your finished beer to oxygen the better. Do you have a keg fermenter?

No I just seen a video of people using standard ball lock kegs to ferment in the only issue is it look like a big too much of a mess when you had the clear line to get the East out

Yeah don't think I would use a ball lock keg for fermenting personally. 1/2 barrel sanke keg yes. Mike has a sanke fermenter and he likes it. may try to borrow for a NEIPA.. AND build a spunding valve to ferment under pressure.. hmm video idea! 😁

Even without pushing the pressure, you can simply purge the carboy alone and rack to it. The small amount of O2 in the hose will be scavenged by the yeast.

Yep you could do that. Many way to accomplish it. 👍🍻

Are you using a 3/8" or 1/2" racking cane?
@ShortCircuitedBrewers7 жыл бұрын
3/8" The amazing thing is with the positive pressure it goes almost as fast as my 1/2" auto siphon did.
@ee23977 жыл бұрын
Do you think the 1/2" racking cane would fit in the orange carboy cap or would it be too tight? I see morebeer sells both 3/8" and 1/2"
@ShortCircuitedBrewers7 жыл бұрын
I doubt it would fit (without modification) you could modify the cap by cutting off the center stem and then drill a hole to fit the 1/2" racking cane. Then you could use that cap just for the transfer.

is there any reason you would need to use the carb cap? I've done it before with just putting the gas hose with no attachments over the carboy cap inlet. Also are you still planing on making a video about the Blichmann BeerGun?

This is not the only way to do it. there are many ways. I liked the barbs on the carb cap that made a secure connection. I have plans to do a review on the beergun at some point. I would like to get a hold of the new one to compare with the first model.

ZmannR2 that is true and I don't always transfer to secondary. I like to for dry hopping. Good way to transfer to keg though. Thanks for commenting! 🍻
@dariusalexadruАй бұрын
Soryy, this is not oxygen-free transfer, the beer from fermentor goes in a secondary fermentatio tank full of oxygen. Same in the proces of transfering to keg. Oxygen-free transfer means that never, never, beer meets air, but just CO2. But for that you need inox tanks, for primary fermantation, for secondary fermentation and, obviously, keg.
