A comment regarding the top nut/bolt on the T-Case. This actually applies for the top 3 since the other two can also be difficult to get to depending on the year of Dakota especially if you have no lift kit. If you drop the transmission cross member and use a floor jack with a short 2x4 under the transmission pan you can lower the whole assembly a few inches this will give you enough room to those top fasteners on the T-Case. Just and FYI, folks.

I found the top bolt is easily removed by removing the cover thats around the shifter. It also allows you to disconnect the connector on top.

Do you do this from inside the cab of the truck?

@@xAnAngelOfDeathx you can remove the top bolt from inside the truck after the console and trim plate are removed.

Thanks so much for posting this. My 1998 Dakota has a very noisy "chain" rattling noise...so I am swapping in a transfer case out of a 2000 model...which I believe is all manual and no electrics. Doing this myself...so wish me luck. Local shop wanted $425.00 to do it.

Not saying that is what it is but it was the case for me. If you take out the transfer case just drop it on your chest when you take it out it's not too heavy. Good Luck!

I'm getting a very similar noise. I though about removing the front drive shaft, lifting the rear wheels, starting it up and putting it in gear to see if it still makes the noise. If it does I'll know it's the chain and not the CV axle.

@@appalachiandiy2415 Yup, CV drive shaft joint/bearings go out all the time, Sounds like crunching walnuts.

Whenever I'm pulling a transfer case or transmission on pretty much everything I take the cross member off so I can lower the transfer case end down...I usually can get at least 6 good inches drop out of it...that lets you get the upper bolts on the transfer case...also...best tool to use is a gearwrench stubby ratcheting wrench...otherwise you'll be under there for a while... If you don't pull the cross member, something else to think about is the fact that you can't get the lower nut loose

Thank you for the tutorial video; it was helpful. However, I have a question. Can you help me with it? I own a 2006 Dodge Dakota with a manual shift transmission. Recently, I replaced my transfer case output shaft. After a test drive, the truck shifted fine initially, but suddenly, it wouldn't move forward or backward. Could this be because I failed to mark the shift? Thanks.

Just beginning to remove the bottom nuts, and the studs are coming out of the case rather than the nuts coming off the stud. There’s no clearance to get them all the way out. I haven’t gotten far enough to decide to remove the cross member. Maybe that would give me room. I guess I could cut them off. The new T-case has new studs. But I’m worried cutting them will come back to bite me. Any suggestions?

Thread them out as far as you can, put loc-tite on the threads and run them back in. Let it set for a day and try again. Red stuff is the best

last question! i’m about to pull one from pick n pull to replace mine in my 95 dakota. i’ve been finding different info on what years are compatible with my 95. do you know what year dakota’s fit my 95? ideally i’ll pull one from as new a model as possible.

I was just about to rip my own TCase out on my 2000 Dakota because 4WD was not engaging (front axle wouldn't turn). Turns out it is the vacuum line is actually cut, so I assume that is the entire issue. Is there any chance you have images or diagrams of where the vacuum at the top should be routed? It is the manual shift NV231 TCase, but the vacuum hose would presumably be the same.

Was it one vacuum hose? Ive got 4 small line that melted causing 4wd to not work

if i could send a picture, yes. but most likely you are missing the ones on top of the case. they are hard to see

had difficulty finding a video specific to my 2004 Dodge Durango with 5.7L Hemi, but so far it looks the same as mine. Anyone know for sure if the case is same for Durango 5.7? I haven't fully dropped my transfer case but I have dropped the drive lines when replacing the front and rear pinion seals (front differential puked out 6 of the 9 mount bolts whilst on the highway). Fortunately I was able to put in a whole new bolt up set, replaced all oil seals from front to rear, and probably used 10 amount of red thread lock necessary out of paranoia.
