I did cause I didn't know friendly fire even exists in AC as a doable thing.

@@bowmen08 It usually isn't but in a few specific cases you can actually shoot down friendly/non-target craft. Here you can shoot down McKinsey's plane but for example you can't shoot down Harling's plane (I tried, with 20 missiles, a TLS and hundreds of MG rounds). I know that in Ace Combat 5 you can also shoot down the SR-71 in the first mission, which of course, fails the mission. Seems to be a case-by-case basis. I definitely find it funny that they decided to make it possible to shoot him down in this particular mission.

On a related tangent, I actually was pissed when the plot doubled back on Trigger maybe shooting Harling down, because, since that cutscene is, from what I can tell, scripted to a missile launch at a drone close to Harling's VTOL, that was actually a very good gotcha to the player: yes, if you fire a missile at something close to another aircraft, it might retarget to that aircraft. To me, that destroyed an implied character arc of Trigger starting out as a hot-headed newbie who only had autistic levels of aggression and suicidal overconfidence going for him (this is even confirmed in-game, with Avril noting that the engine on Trigger's plane is shot to all fuck, with him clearly being overly aggressive in how he flies) and then maturing into an experienced, level-headed ace, most likely paralleling the player's path too, from never letting go of the throttle and high energy turn buttons to more intelligent maneuvering and picking your engagements. Like, oh, haha, we can't have the protagonist **actually** have fucked up at least once, that would be too interesting!

On my first attempt I was way too distracted by this dope as fuck music scanning for missile trails to find the sams and I forgot about the oncoming intercepters and let mckinsey die. :/ What bandog said afterward was quite worth it though haha.
