One of the best things I did in our small bathroom, was to put a cabinet behind a piece of artwork. My husband installed an outlet (for my toothbrush) and shelves in the wall and then hid it behind a picture. It is a functional way to make extra storage while giving the bathroom style., instead of another medicine cabinet behind a mirror.

I am in the process of removing old peel and stick tiles with new peel and stick tiles, and it's easier to remove the old tiles if you heat them up first with a hair dryer!

Re: Using the gold sconce in your bathroom...Back in the 70's we had a nice looking mirror with a stencil type picture painted on it (popular at the time) and it looked nice. We were a household of females. Our males guests pointed out that when used they used our bathroom...uh...think of facing a waist high reflection. The curved polished sconce gives a clear reflection of ... I think you can see where this is going. I would use that beautiful sconce somewhere else :-)

One small change that I made in my home that had a big impact was switching my formal living room with my dining room! It just made sense, because we NEVER used the formal living room (which was smaller anyway), but we frequently gathered around the formal dining table in the larger dining room! Voila! Everything fell perfectly into place and we all love it!

I love your home and yes, the sconce next to the cabinet is perfect. I'm lucky to have a husband that can fix anything and has a garage full of tools. His abilities come in handy (and keeps him busy since he retired early!). Artwork above a toilet is what I would recommend. The small change we did when we first moved in is to upgrade faucets and hardware. It makes a huge difference. Love all the pictures of the boys! ☀️🌴🦩☺️🥰😊❤️🥰🥰❤️❤️

Really appreciate your more hands-on approach for this video. Also, rechargeable lamps are absolutely brilliant for lighting up those underlit corners in a room. My small change with a big impact was hanging a pendant lamp low over my coffee table. It really makes a difference in making the room look more designed and purposeful. Also, switching to smart lighting, including a light strip behind my sideboard. The layered lights do wonders in the evenings to make the place look inviting and moody.

I have to say it is a relief to know that even The Great Garrett can make a (little) mistake once in a blue moon. At least now we know you're human! LOL! You wanted us to tell about little changes we've made that made an impact/difference. How about a substantial change? This year we bought two new brownish-gray sofas (my choice of colour). Threw out two old chairs. Was going to get rid of my older sofa (in great shape still) but my husband told me not to, so I got rid of another chair to make room for the sofa. Fast forward several months, and... Not happy with my new sofa, (my husband likes his) I find my old one more comfortable. Not happy with the new sofa colours- my husband looks good in brownish-gray, but our art on the wall looks out of place now, and I look even more drab and worn out than I feel on the inside. LOL! No, really. So, I have now ordered medium dark brown sofa covers for brand new sofas. My husband isn't even surprised at this point. (He has heard "I'm sorry,baby" one too many times- but it does get me out of s*it.) The popular actress Marilu Henner from the '80's once gave an interview years ago where she stated she wouldn't buy furniture in colours that she wouldn't wear. She was right. And I am an idiot. Learn from my (big) mistake, everyone! And Merry Christmas to Garrett, family, and all of Garrett's viewers!

Yes to the sconce above the commode. Is there a wall across from that to use the other one? It would add symmetry, draw the eye away from the commode, and add relaxing lighting for bathing.

Hello dear one, Thank you for sharing so much. Time and again you prove you are real, you are genuine and like all other out there, who once in a while make design errors, so thank you for being YOU:) love that for me❤ I absolutely loved the tile pics, amazing solution for the wall collage, because nailing always stops my picture creativity. I will try that! The peel vinyl tiles are such a good hack. Now regarding your scones, my 2 cents I liked in the powder room area, as usually it’s an under estimated place and a pop like that brings life to that unexpected area of design. The scone you wanted to use near the tv, I somehow didn’t get the kick from it, maybe I thought the chair beneath the scone was clashing for attention. However once you do it all, maybe it will look good. Or sometimes we just need to store our scone and soon you will find the perfect spot, any design idea never goes waste even if it’s a mistake for that time:) that’s my personal experience😍 Enjoying your whole house doing videos. Great video, Garrett! We made three small changes in our bathroom. First, we replaced a fixed showerhead with a handheld shower mounted on a vertical sliding bar. The 6' hose makes it easy to shower in a seated position as needed. Then we replaced the builder-grade light bar above the vanity mirror, keeping the same overall width but reducing the number of bulbs. Finally, we selected LED bulbs that are less bright. The bathroom is now more functional and welcoming.

Garrett, My husband grew up in an older home and through the years, he would mention the “crystal” door knobs. That memory really stuck in his mind. We are now living in our 15th home out of 38 years of marriage. Our business is custom home construction so not unusual. This time we didn’t want to build or major remodeling. I also now am living with a rare form of MS so I wanted a small manageable forever home with Cara hater inside and out. After months of searching, I fell in love when we pulled up to thisb1949 cottage with an amazing, unique large yard. However it was inside that was adorable. All of the bedrooms and bathrooms had those beautiful “crystal” door knobs that sold me. Once we lived here, I suddenly noticed that the one coat closet that was next to a bedroom and across from a bathroom door had a plain, inexpensive silver door knob! The only door in two joining hallways without the matching knob! I just couldn’t live with it once it was noticed. I started the hunt for a matching one and hubby installed it and now all feels right again.

I am not a big fan of the sconces but the bathroom placement I think is nice. Even the light on dim is a good mood light/ night light. I do not think the space next to the tv is a good spot because the cabinet is already a visual item. The sconce would take away from it and compete for attention. I also agree the sconces are too big for the fireplace area. They are really too big for most areas. They will overwhelm any area unless they are by themselves, like in the bathroom area. Love the floor and that door knob is fabulous. It is in quiet good taste and goes with the frame on the $2 bills beautifully. Love, love.

Garret it would be interesting to see both sconces above the toilet, one above the other, and use the light as the art. Might not work but it struck me as potentially visually beautiful. The warmth of the sconces and the pattern of light against the cooler fixtures. I love the mixed metals too.

I fell in love with a chandelier I found on FB Marketplace for $50. She's copper and marble and sculptural; and the last element to my bedroom re-fresh. I will mood board a room, put it together and save the painting of the walls for last. If it tugs at me and makes my heart sing, it's meant to be. Happy Holidays and thank you for the great content!

YES on the sconce in the chair spot! You have such great rooms to work with. I don't unfortunately. But I'm slowly getting an idea of what I can do to put a teeny bit of design into my home. The other day I was over the moon when I put a picture of my 2 cats on my rumpled bed and someone on X (Twitter) loved them. She ended up buying the same/similar sheets and duvet cover. I'd finally bought a holiday duvet cover and flannel sheets and wanted red and white. I had wanted flannel for years and finally bought some very inexpensive but very nice ones from Amazon. It really, really made me happy that someone liked mine. It made me feel like I can do something decent in my house!

Thank you for commenting about removing hardware and knobs BEFORE painting. People are so lazy who leave it on and get paint all over everything. It looks so bad. I love your glass door knobs. I want to change all the hardware and knobs in my home but it’s going to be several hundred dollars. Yikes. But little things do indeed make a house special. I painted all my interior doors Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black and will put all new brass hardware on. I may go the glass doorknob route. What’s another $1,000?

Rather than hire an electrician to install sconces, I hung them and used rechargable lightbulbs with a remote. I keep them plugged in with a charger cable and hide the cord. I appreciate it because it works like a regular light without changing batteries. Got the bulb off Amazon. There are tons of Amazon options.

The peel and stick tiles make a big difference! I think you could keep them long term! I have been contemplating trying peel and stick to cover old gross tiles in my bathroom but they are 2 inch tiles so I’m not sure if the surface would be too uneven with all the dips for grout lines. Do you find that the peel and stick ones have good thickness and rigidity to them?

I do like them. I think they could work for allot of people long term, but since I’ve installed them to see if we’d like this type of design element, now my husband and I are certain we want to have similar marble tiles installed.

I think we win the prize for doing the most remodeling at one time. We took out the central wall in the main floor and opened up the LR/DR/KIT/TV ROOM. No center support wall so why not! Our TV room was extended to make a sunroom (painted the tiny bit of wall there dark blue - Behr Shipyard). This all required a new deck as the old one was collapsing! To define the kitchen area we put in a giant island, so when I’m cooking I actually see the rest of the room. But we didn’t stop there. We added a third garage with a new laundry room and expanded entry from the garage, and the powder room there was turned into a 3/4 bath with a shower (all 4 seasons here have some type of dirt to track into the house) The master bath is gutted and plumbed with a zero clearance shower entry so we can age in place. We’re almost done, painting, tiling, some electrical issues to be dealt with, furniture to be arranged, artwork to be placed. But most of all construction dust to be eradicated! ITS IN EVERYTHING!! What year and a half this has been! Garrett your guidance in so many many things has been priceless. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, and happiness on returning to your home 🎄❤️🎄

The magnetic picture frame system is absolutely brilliant. I do like the sconces quite a bit. The one by the tv would be very nice. The one in the bathroom above the toilet is very functional for this day and age. Lets face it, most people take their phones or tablets in the bathroom and "multitask", shall we call it. just my opinion. Merry Christmas Garrett.

Do you already have lighting by your bed or in the bathroom? Something about the gold near the wood, in those tones… I dunno. I don’t _love_ it. And I _love_ everything else in your home. But I do love the idea of a slightly metallic wallpaper in that room! Why is it that chinoiserie (can you believe I just spelled that right on the first try?! Omg!) seems so appropriate in a dining room? Is it bc it’s so busy, and that room isn’t as busy? There is more of the lower third visible in the dining room than anywhere else. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I suggest for the bathroom paint, try a technique that’s difficult like stripes or a chair rail, just to get the practice so you can learn those valuable lessons that we all learn the first time we attempt something difficult with paint. With these things the prep is the biggest part, so choose something with a technique that has a learning curve. I think the biggest thing with those sconces, bc I have the same thing by my bed, is you want them to be easily accessible so you can reach in and grab that puck to recharge it. Hopefully your pucks are good quality and have a long battery life, (not saying LeChic would choose anything less than the best but even though I quasi work for them, we all know Amazon is like the Wild West) but you want to be realistic about the remote lighting and how often you’ll be using it- as in you will have to turn those on and off often, as needed, (because you can’t leave them on all the time) and you’ll be accessing (and touching) the remote to do it (or the light itself, they are usually press-on-able too) so they need to be accessible. Great by a desk, a vanity, in a closet, or by the bed. Also great in a power outage! I recommend putting them somewhere you can easily walk up to and reach.
