The choreography in this fight is awesome. Optimus doesn't tip the fight in his favor by some boost of determination or something, he is constantly moving and redirecting the 'Cons, using them to unbalance each other, thinking tactically, and he almost always one of them between him and the others, which allows him to take back control of the fight.

I've watched it back so many times in slow motion, the background details are insane. Prime throws Starscream into Megatron, stumbling them both so he can take Grindor, then Prime takes Grindor's propeller hand off, which goes flying into Megatron forcing his shot to miss, then Prime rolls over Starscream and makes Starscream shoot Grindor in the face while also covering his own back from Megatron charging him, and as he lands he throws his right-hand blade into Grindor's leg! Then towards the end he takes Starscream's arm clean off WITH BRUTE FORCE, BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE A BLADE ANY LONGER, and slaps him round the face with it!! Honestly I love this fight more and more every time I watch it.

One thing that’s interesting is that Grindor was really smart in how he fought Optimus. He kept his distance and only went in when he had a clear line of fire or a chance to fight Optimus with his conventional weapons. Be only died because he ended up being too close, therefore an easy target for Optimus.

So apparently Grindor has the ability to foresee what happens in combat and thus kept his distance. I would say that hilariously he knew when he would perish, but believed he had more time to counter it given how megatron and starscream were in front of him. That's why he tried sneak taking the sword out of him. But he underestimated the agility and quickness OP used on both. plus, losing an arm didn't help either.

I’ll never forget it, when I watched in theaters back in 2009, I was so excited to see Optimus kick so much ass, but as soon as I saw him get stabbed and blow up, that was when my nine year old self cried in tears as my beloved hero died in front of me and that was when I lost hope for the good guys throughout the movie until he got resurrected later on making me scream in excitement. This movie might be shit to many, but I will always love it for all the childhood memories. Edit: Thank you all so much for the beautiful replies you all had on your memories with this scene/movie. One thing I've come to really appreciate about Michael Bay's Transformer movies, is how he uses the environment in fight scenes. You really feel the destruction and he finds creative ways to integrate it into the fight. Optimus using the tree as a weapon never gets old.

Recently my mind wandered back to this scene and I realized something.... Optimus was a total badass here. He pretty much had the upper hand for most of the fight against Megatron. He bashed him with a tree, ducked under his claw, punched his back, clotheslined him, stabbed his shoulder, TOSSED HIM AROUND LIKE A RAGDOLL TO THE POINT WHERE HE CALLED FOR BACKUP, tackled him and threw an elbow into his knee, his own knee into his face, tossed Starscream around, got beat, sliced, and shot (not necessarily in that order), then rallied HIMSELF and went totally savage and brutal against the Decepticons. All while fighting solely melee. Prime is an absolute warrior.

I know a lot of people have used this scene, especially the face ripping scene, to talk down about how the Bayverse Prime was overly violent. But if you think about it, in this scene, Optimus is fighting tooth and nail not just to keep the Decepticons from another plan to destroy Earth, but trying to protect one of his few human friends. He fought so violently because he knew if he failed and the Cons got Sam it would be the end of him and Earth.

For years, I’ve been convinced that the reason Optimus lost so badly in T1 was that he was holding back due to being in the middle of a crowded city (and not wanting to kill more people). Here, it’s an empty forest, so he doesn’t hold back at all. I think if he’d fought like this against T1 Megatron, he would have beat him.

People hate this prime because he's becoming less and less hesitant into killing decepticons since 1, but I'd say this is realistic take of a leader who slowly gets more and more frustrated and angry at the fact that the war did not end in their own planet and loses his friends one after another.

Add the fact that humans are seeing him and the autobots as threats to then ultimately forcing them to leave the planet, realizing too late that it's no longer the autobots the decepticons are after but rather the earth and its people. It's only natural to change your perspective as time goes on, everything changes. And this is why character development is a thing and I think Michael Bay did just right with optimus.

Of course he'd be less hesitant. The Decepticons are just straight up evil and how many have ever changed sides? Not many cause they are always committed to the cause, especially Starscream. With the amount of times he's failed Megatron, he's still loyal to him

the thing i love about this fight is how fluid it is you can always picture where the other characters are if they aren't in shot, and the cuts are done well as to not confuse the viewer, going from a closer angle to a wide shot like when prime uppercuts megs and then goes for Starscream, it's just a really well choreographed fight

That's why he's the best Prime in the history of the Autobots. It took a bit of luck and cunning for Megatron to defeat him. Got to give the Decepticons credit for holding for so long though. They had good armor.

@Darkness of Redbone I believe what Megatron is trying to state is Optimus Prime had become weak because he had become overprotective over a single human and mankind. Megatron knows that Optimus would be able to kill many of his best warriors even though his warriors are twice bigger than Optimus size. Despite that, in Megatron eyes, Optimus Prime had literally reduced himself into a human babysitter and willingly threw the away his Cybertronian pride over some mortals. That is why Megatron may have stated Optimus as being weak.

I like how Megatron was getting beaten up by Optimus but then called him weak It's the kind of "If he's winning, I'll run away but when I get a chance to strike I'll call him puny" type of personality and it fits Megatron in this film Also, being friends with autobots would be both the most terrifying and awesome thing ever Your life is in constant danger but you are protected by giant robots and they even give you a ride
