Kokoha Production for that level of detail, paint can be almost impossible for it to come out looking nice and clean. I’d suggest going for labels, like the kind you can get at Toyhax.com. I have never painted before but I got a legacy skids and I really wanted to add some paint attachments to the tail lights and some details on the back since the figure lacks color in the back portion of his vehicle mode, which sucks because the front of his vehicle mode is of course painted nicely already. Seeing someone else do it and explain how they do it is very helpful for me while I try to somewhat plan out how to do so. It also helps for if I want to add more paint attachments to the figure. He may be my only one figure I have, but I still wanna try it. Gotta figure out which red to paint the taillights, and see if I have any silver available, but if not I’ll stick to the taillights.

I’m painting my Studio Series Devastator and while I was painting Scavenger, the red and white paint has dried, but looks mattle and flat. Plus it seems like one wrong nail scratch and the paint feels like it’s gonna scratch off. It doesn’t feel smooth like the factory paint. Is there something I’m missing like a clear coat or primer finish? Again if it’s just a finish could you please tell me which one to get?

@IaconDispatch4 жыл бұрын
Temp thanks for watching! For a project as big as Primes trailer, you wouldn’t want to hand paint it. The larger surface area would be much better suited to spray painting. That’s a bit more complicated, since you’d need to mask the areas you don’t want painted, but you’d end up with better looking results. Hand painting would work better for smaller details and accents on the trailer.

@h.cedric81574 жыл бұрын
I have experimented with Tamiya paints, in my experience, Tamiya acrylics could become more durable if you do use the Tamiya Acrylic X-20 thinner. Next more durable is the Tamiya Lacquer paints, and in my tests, Tamiya enamels are the most durable, but at the expense of odors, specially if you use airbrushes, and cures quite slow. but your fingernail cant rip it off specially if the plastic was cleaned really well and roughened a bit.

I have a question, do you use anything as a coat to protect the paint on the transformers?
@IaconDispatch4 жыл бұрын
In the custom painting I have done so far, I haven’t used a primer. I mostly just try to make sure the plastic is clean and free of dirt or residue, and sometimes I will sand some parts before painting if they will rub against each other to try and reduce scratching of the paint as the parts move. Otherwise, I just apply the paint directly to the plastic. Many customizers prefer to use primer, as it will definitely give a better surface for the paint to stick to. At the end of the day, if you want the absolute best possible finish, I’d say a primer is a good idea. If you’re a more casual customizer, I’d say you can safely work without it and still get a good result. Thanks for watching! 👍🏼

@IaconDispatch5 жыл бұрын
T vdB hi there, and thanks for watching! For your questions, 1 - I really can’t speak much to airbrushing as I’ve never done it personally. I’m sure there are helpful tutorial videos that can give you more info on it. 2 - to repaint one vibrant color in to another (ex: yellow plastic with red paint) you most definitely need to gently sand the figure (a bit more in places that will rub during movement or transformation) and then use a primer before doing the final color. You would also want to thin the paint a bit as well to get a smoother finish, as a thicker paint will definitely show the brush strokes more visibly. This is definitely a more advanced process than what I’ve shown here in this video, so be sure to do some more research before you get started. I’d hate to hear that you didn’t have a good experience with your customization project. Hope this helps!

Do you freely transform your fully painted figures? If so, do you prime and sand them prior to painting?
@IaconDispatch4 жыл бұрын
Yes, all my customs are still fully transformable, although I try to be very careful when changing them, and I don’t do it very often. Sometimes you do need to sand down some spots before painting to make sure the rubbing is minimized during transformation, which helps protect the paint and avoid chips or scratches. I don’t usually prime my customs, but it definitely helps the paint stick better and give a better overall result. Many customizers choose to prime their figures before painting for that reason. @IaconDispatch4 жыл бұрын
and that’s on periodt yes, all the figures I’ve painted are still fully transformable. However, one of the things you need to be aware of is where the plastic and paint may rub together when you change from one mode to another. It can scrape or chip from the friction. Sometimes it’s best to sand down the areas that touch a little bit before painting to reduce the chance that the paint will rub on those spots. It’s a bit more of an advanced customization process, but if you intend to transform them often, it’s worth doing. Thanks for watching!

@IaconDispatch5 жыл бұрын
Lord Megatron what kind of paint did you use? I don’t know of any acrylic model paints that would still be sticky after 10+ hrs of drying. For loosening the joints, you could take them apart and use a fine sandpaper to reduce the material that is rubbing, but do this very carefully. Remember you can always take more off if needed, but once it’s gone it can be more difficult to tighten the joint back up again if it ends up too loose.

illetrop79 prepping is very dependent on the figure and what you want to do. If it’s a complex figure, you’ll need to sand all the parts that rub against each other during transformation to help avoid chipping and wear. Most simple figures don’t need to do much. Doom fry for a full-figure repaint, you need to do some more disassembly and light sanding of areas where the plastic rubs during transformation in order to avoid chipping and scratching of the new paint. "i know this comment is late" but how long do i gotta wait?

Not sure what you mean by how long you need to wait. If you mean how long to let the paint dry before playing with the figure, I’d suggest at least one full day.

@@IaconDispatch I mean how long to let the paint dry and I can wait for 1 day, and I hope you do more of this series! (you earn a subscribe)

I love the work you're doing but next time please only keep one figure in frame at the same time because it was really hard to see what you were doing at times because the camera was focus was focusing on the background figure instead of the thing you were painting.

Kevin Shull a good point, and something I try to keep on top of, but sometimes it slips my mind when I get in the middle of a segment. Will try to keep that as a focus for future videos. Cheers, and thanks for watching!
