"Dark Awakening" WAS traumatizing when watching it as a kid. I remember my elementary school had an emergency assembly the next day after it aired, because the kids (me included) were coming to school CRYING. The adults asked us what was wrong. Everyone was literally crying that Optimus Prime had died lol. Hey, a lot of us 80's kids loved him, and things like this was NOT the norm in any cartoon back then.

Ironic that Dark Awakening was shown out of sequence. It wasn't supposed to be this early in Season 3. It was supposed to precede The Return of Optimus Prime.

@@pious83 That's an urban legend. It did air when it was intended as it had been produced in sequence with the previous episodes. In fact, one of the big reasons it aired is because by the time Hasbro was learning how badly kids were reacting to Optimus' death in the movie the episode was too far into production to stop it. There was an alternate version that did air before Return of Optimus Prime and added narration from Victor Caroli addressing the upcoming two-parter. That version has seen more home media releases than the original, so that's why people remember it more.

As a kid I missed the more Earthbound episodes of S1 and S2, I felt S3 leaned too heavily into sci-fi and the Autobots rarely used their alt modes after all they weren't on Earth often so why the need for the disguise? But with the years I've come to appreciate the more "mature" episodes like Web World and Dweller in the Depths.

I also love the theme song and season 2 gives me goosebumps every time I listen.maybe because it brings back my childhood as gen x dude who grew up with he man gi joe and my favorite transformers

With "Killing Jar" and "Only Human" technically being GI Joe crossover episodes it makes you wonder where Marissa, Flint, and Cobra Commander are in GI Joe Extreme since it was a sequel to ARAH which ironically also takes place in 2006. They could have also used it to explain what happened to Galvatron and the Decepticons/Hive at the end of Season 4. Would have been the perfect opportunity to bring back some of classic Transformers who did not appear in the original G1 series during the height of Beast Wars and given us something light years better than Machine Wars.

PS they could have also brought back Starscream's ghost as a Pretender that gets his body destroyed by the Transformers and Joes with his spark being sent into space and time to explain how he got on prehistoric Earth in Beast Wars.

Season 3 was mixed by transformers fans and I can see why. After the movie, kids are still recovering that their favorite characters were killed off especially Optimus Prime and was replaced by the new characters and oh boy Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime was hated by the fans as he's responsible for the death of Optimus Prime but years later people forgive Hot Rod. Plus, some of characters that survive the autobot city battle has been written out of the show for good. The story and plot are a bit darker than the past season like Zombie Optimus or hate plaque, and introducing new lore for transformers. Though the idea of the Quintessons being creator of transformers and that little space monkey thing is the creator of Unicron was very unpopular and was quietly ignore by most people.

People "forgave Hot Rod" because it wasn't his fault. Prime got himself killed because he couldn't finish the fight. A little hindsight makes that glaringly obvious.

The Quintessons being the creators isn't exactly 'ignored' I would say. Many adaptations of the quintessons reference that aspect in some way. Even Transformers One had the main villain turn Cybertron into essentially a secret tributary to them. And the dreaded "Last Night" made 'Quintessa' the creator of the transformers. It's certainly left an impact on writers.

Nightmare Planet is my number 1 episode of G1, hands down. Love that its off world, love the focus on Rodimus Prime and that it wasn't an episode where he was questioning his leadership. Love that the Predacons are ONE of the baddies in the episode (Orange is my favourite color). Dweller in the Depths - cause of how scary the episode is, The Return of Optimus Prime and maybe The Big Broadcast of 2005.

I never knew Rodimus Prime was such a deranged terrorist in this season. If Optimus Prime hadn't come back, he likely would've destroyed more planets than Unicron.

It is interesting they gave him such a death wish angle to his character. Marred in his belief in being chosen by the Matrix. It would be written better today. But it was really interesting in comparison to Optimus.

@@pious83 They sabotaged Rodimus on purpose because they didn't want kids to get attached to him cause by that point they knew they were bringing Optimus back. They went out of their way to show Autobot Leader succession then completely undermined it. Why not bring back Sentinel Prime or Nova Prime if that's the case.

And then it was revealed, it was supposed to be Shockwave, not Blitzwing, that had the doubts about the Quintessons. But y'know, Shox toy discontinued, even though Shockwave would have made WAY more sense.

Not really. Given Shockwave was essentially Megatron's butler in the cartoon. Plus he was an "offscreen" death in The Movie.

@@pious83 all that aside, it would have been interesting because we don't know a lot about Shockwave's past other than he was with Megatron in the events in "War Dawn" (and also offscreen deaths don't count lol - heck, even on-screen "deaths" don't count when it's Megatron in Season 1 of G1). That would have made the interaction with Galvatron over the whole Decepticon Matrix is fake conversation even more interesting, given that YES, Shockwave was basically Megatron's butler in S1/S2.

@@shebakoby In light of the Marvel comic and later media. Sunbow really wasted Shockwave, as a character. Considering he didn't return after the Movie (even in the Takara series). He just came across as a lesser version of Soundwave (imo the best pre-Movie Decepticon). Then again, as stated in the video. Even Soundwave got thrown under the bus by Season 3. Although the Takara series did actually bring him back at least. He was supposed to have been crushed under Unicron's slamming hand, after ordering the Decepticons to scramble. But for whatever reason it wasn't outright stated. However, the fact that he doesn't show up again seems to have been a conscious decision to stick with that idea.

@@pious83 well, in any case, the discontinuation of his toy sealed his fate as to further appearances. I mean look at Jetfire I mean Skyfire. He wasn't killed off; when his toy was discontinued he simply vanished from the series. The intent to kill off Shockwave may have been there, but if it is this ambiguous, it needn't be absolute.

@@shebakoby All those fans I imagine at the time saying where was Skyfire, Hound etc during the Battle of Autobot City? Or post-Movie, such as Shockwave. Sunbow: _'Shhh! Don't worry about it.'_ The one part that I do wish wasn't left ambiguous and on the storyboards was the battle of the Ark. Where all the other Combiners, aside from Devastator, were supposed to be during The Movie.

This is more like it! I mostly got into Transformers via The Movie. Followed by Season 3 & 4. Largely missing out on the first two seasons. Tried to go back and watch them later and just couldn't. Too silly. No overarching plot and the characters just aren't as interesting.
