100% the Transformers can carry their own movies! I was shouting from the rooftops about that in 2007. Hopefully we can start moving that needle a bit more than Bee did. But the bayverse was the tipping point from Didneys Cars to Transformers in my house. So to help me accept that its not for me, without those movies my kids probably dont care about transformers.

I *LOVE* the idea of a season 2.5 set between 1986 and 2005. I've been thinking about doing a fan comic set in this period. I'm really intrigued by the origin of Autobot city, and what happened to all the characters in this time period. Presumably most of the Autobots on Decepticon occupied Cybertron fled to Earth (which accounts for all the characters with cybertronian alt modes) or are in hiding/ fighting a guerilla war.

Season 2.5 is what we've needed for a long time. There's unlimited potential to expand the S1/S2 characters we love, shine spotlights on the lesser featured S3 characters, weave in characters from the Japanese G1 and even throw in some brand new characters and concepts.
@albineigengrau32125 жыл бұрын
Comparable to the DC animated route, I wish they would take a cue from how the Japanese approach their old mecha properties like Gundam or Macross: do a regular reboot for the kids every few years, yes, but also keep on releasing high-quality OAVs (direct-to-video movies and/or miniseries) in the original continuity and with the original aesthetic for the older fans. If we could just have one 45 minutes episode of the Transformers with the storytelling and visual quality of something like Gundam The Origin or Macross Plus, I'd already be perfectly happy.

It's funny cause me and my buddy were just talking about this a couple days ago and we were coming to the same conclusion. It does seem to be a shame that the people in charge can't seem to get a good grip and what the franchise needs to grow and renew itself to the next generation of fans. I will say I'm still curious to see what the siege series is suppose to be like since I had heard RoosterTeeth will be doing it and they did RWBY which is a good series and their newest series GenLock( which did have big robots in it) was solid in story if not a little retro in it's choice of animation style. Another important and great piece of content for us to sink our teeth into.

Hasbro relies on the same three year cycle for their toys and animated shows that most company's use; If they want a long running line/series they have to plan it out from the onset to mature with the audience like the Clone Wars series did, while sprinkling in episodes that attract a younger age group allowing them to gain interest in the fandom along the way.

Not exactly a new cartoon series but a unique way to reinterpret the G1 cartoon.

I don't think your right about Hasbro not having there pulse on IDW. They just revealed a target master of Rung. I think they just don't know the HOW of doing IDW.
@JONNYSORENSEN_AU5 жыл бұрын
The continuity that Rung was in has finished, and the story of when he was relevant started several years ago. Its not at all now like it was during older generations toys where we got loads of great toys based on IDW style art / bots. IDW is almost forgotten about, it's an afterthought - and the comics quality has really gone downhill with the current comics being so overly commercial and really not engaging at all. Hasbro's "brand unification" strategy across all types of media over last couple years has been clumsy and just downright ugly imo. In the current line up, they make the comics art look like the toys! Warts and all, its just backwards.

Why have they chosen not to tap into the readily available stories from IDW? Because maybe... the execs haven't even looked at the synopses of those stories. Those stories might not even have reached the pitching stage.
@Truepheng5 жыл бұрын
As long time fans, we know there are plenty of good stories ripe for adaptation. But the execs are almost always people who know nothing about the available material. They handle numerous IPs simultaneously and look at labels before allowing themselves to be pitched. Those who pitch to them are well aware that for an IP expected to be for children's toys, the execs would immediately dismiss anything labelled "adult-oriented". Hence, the pitchers wouldn't even bring it up during the discussion.

I'd reboot the movies. Things i would do: Everything leads to the arrival of unicron at earth. All spark is an anti unicron weapon built by the original primes. Megatron dies as he does in the first movie. Going to Egypt is fine, but i'd make it so its the resting place of alpha trion, who exiled himself to earth to study a back up plan to defeat unicron aka the matrix. Dinobots would be introduced as his guardians. Make it so there are multiple primes commanding their own units of autobots all across the galaxy, this would allow for the introduction of rodimus, second movie ends with galvatron killing optimus and taking the matrix, allowing unicron to come to earth and destroy the primes. Third movie is just about rodimus primes attempt to get the matrix back and revive optimus, his crew, the 86 movie cast now rebranded as the wreckers, succeed, unicron lands on earth wrecking house, final battle between galvatron and optimus takes place, with optimus convincing him to break free of unicrons control, becoming megatron once again and plunging both himself and the matrix into unicrons spark. Oh and for that to make sense, we would go with IDW origins megatron as a back story...

I’ve been spouting this for years, if they’d make a show catered towards adults, it’d make a killing. As long as it doesn’t get too overboard with the adult tone. Like to where it’s just nonsensical killing, cursing, and what not. Personally, my dream team would be studio TRIGGER. Since transformers has played such a big role in most of the senior staff, it’d only make sense for them to do it. To add even more fuel to the fire, TRIGGER has even been doing designs for FlameToys and one their recent works titled SSSS.Gridman was filled with a bunch of references to transformers. Including G1 and mostly Shattered Glass

After Beast Wars to me it seemed like the Unicron trilogy started making the media/toys more "kid friendly" in design and aesthetic. I feel like it's damaging to make the design so juvenile because it makes it easier for someone to outgrow it and move on to something else. Prime was a real truck. Megatron a real gun. Primal a real Gorilla. Beast Megs an inaccurate featherless/purple TRex but still realistic in design.... then take everything after that. designs became round big eyed stubby and unrealistic.

I’m gonna have to disagree with a couple of things here. 1. Super hyped for a bumblebee sequel, I think if they lean fully into the aesthetic and characterization set up in that film, we could get something impressive onscreen for transformers fans 2. There are two series post beast wars that had an impact on their generation, the first being the Unicron trilogy, which an increasing number of the “core fans” were introduced to the franchise with (including myself). The second being animated. A lot of the younger core fan base (late teens) that aren’t as into say toy collecting, or the original cartoon, and instead focus on things like art, or cosplay, were brought in with animated and then moved on to the post death of Optimus Prime IDW series.

I very much agree with the overwhelming majority of this. HeMan 200X and Thundercats 2010 were both great and I'd love a Transformers series like them. However, let's not forget that both of these series failed at the halfway point with their stories incomplete. Voltron is this decade's HeMan 200X/Thundercats 2010. It seemed to struggle over the finish line with a lot of the later seasons coming in the form of more half-length series rather than fewer full-length series. Nonetheless it did reach the finish line. The difference between these two series, in my opinion, is Netflix. HeMan and Thundercats both failed in the toy aisle; Voltron was well into series 3 before toys were even released. It seems to me that access to a global audience allows a minority interest nerd property to muster enough of a profit for the cartoon to be successful in its own right. I worry whether Rooster Teeth can do for Transformers what Dreamworks did for Voltron, though. Also, let's give Hasbro some credit. The properties we're comparing to - HeMan, Thundercats, Voltron, etc... - haven't had a significant presence in the toy aisle since the eighties. In the UK, there have been Transformers for sale in toy shops non-stop since '84. :-) What would I do? Transformers: The Movie II. Same style - including the rock music interludes. Put it out like Batman The Killing Joke - limited cinema release if possible but mainly straight-to-blu-ray and see how well it does. How expensive can an hour and a half be?...

The main reason why merchandise doesn't sell like it once did and it never will again -- Gaming. Esports is huge and it going to grow by double digits every year in the next 5 to 10 years. Transformers, toys, etc can not compete with the time, money and attention gaming has on this generation and the generation coming behind it. Simple as that. Any new TF media will do fine but nothing that tips the scales nor will it have a major impact on kids.

I don't think it would make any economical sense for Hasbro to produce cartoons on discontinued toys like G1 Season 2.5. What Hasbro is not doing well, and we all know this, is the story telling aspect of their franchise. From the Combiner Wars trilogy to the Bayverse movie, they are just lousy at story telling. Now we know that a good cartoon can be made aka TF Prime and that was a binge-worthy series. What Hasbro needs to do is to make sure the media for the Generations/CHUG stuff comes out almost as quick as the toys themselves, just like what they do for the movie-verse. What Hasbro can do to really get the new generation of kids into the toys and the media is to make the cartoons when the toys are made... make the cartoon episodes have cliffhangers... the kids need to buy the toys and then they can unlock these characters and then end the cartoon episode in a variety of ways on their iPad or whatever using AR. Now that would be freaking awesome.

There you go getting all philosophical again! - “There are archetypes within these characters, there’s something about them that speaks to something primal, the same way that a lot of famous stories do that we keep telling ourselves over and over again.” I’m the philosophy professor, who’s also a Christian, that told you about my PhD dissertation last month. Your comment makes me wonder if you’re into the Jungian psychology that Jordan Peterson has made popular again. Jung was hitting on something correct with his archetypal theory, which you summarized well. Jung got this idea from Plato but, whereas Jung said these archetypes were MERELY fictional stories in our collective unconscious, Plato said these archetypes actually reflect something REAL. I’d say all these fictional good vs. evil stories resonate with us because they reflect the REAL story of the universe we live in - the REAL story of good defeating evil through a hero who sacrificed Himself to rescue us. It’s either that or these stories function like morphine to make us feel better while we’re on our way to becoming worm food, a theory which seems to me wildly implausible.

After watching a Avatar and Korra for the first time made me frustrated and the majority of the transformers fiction. While Avatar and Korra wanted to be a cartoon for the sake of being a cartoon, most transformers shows are made for the sole benefit of selling toys (At it's extremes were American G1, Japanese G1, the entire Unicron Trilogy, RID 2015, and cyberverse) and even the better shows (Beast Wars/Machines, Animated, and Prime) feel like cash grabs. Most times transformers fictions feels more like souless advertisiment for either beer and cars (bayverse) nostalgia trips into one of the most over rated decades imaginable where everything was an advertisement (Bumblebee). I think to really get a good transformers show that feels more authentic is to have a show (on Nick or cartoon Network) that is not backed by a toyline or a hundred of other companies. And please don't say to me that they are just kids shows because Avatar, Korra, and adventure Time were also for children and they were not made as advertisments. And also don't tell me that you need a toyline for a show either (if you need a toyline to match the show then either grow up a little or rely on third party. Make a show that does not rely on nostalgia of the traditional formula (One side vs the other, Autobot vs decepticon).
@iamtheomnimonkey5 жыл бұрын
Just a note about American G1. Hasbro commissioned the show to push the toys, but the writers and voice actors had ZERO care about the toys. If you talk to these people they'll tell you they were just making a show. They took inspiration for the characters from real historical people such as General Patton, and from characters in other movies that they loved growing up. That's why a lot of the characters had personalities that were completely different from the toy bios. The stories didn't start taking clues from the toy line until the '86 movie and the seasons that followed. In fact season 3 was being written at the same time as the '86 movie and the writers of season 3 were pissed off that the movie killed off Optimus Prime and they were not happy about writing in a bunch of replacement characters.

Damn. I really enjoyed the Power of the Primes series. The tired Apathetic Megatron that saves the universe. Perfect.

Why the fuck Hasbro/Takara wont do what Warner Bros does with DC with dvd/digital movies is beyond me. Even Dragon Ball came back after nearly 20 years with Super, whether people think Super is good or not is irrelevant, its the fact Dragon Ball is even a bigger franchise then it was when Z ended, and they pick up where they left off. There is a huge interest for a new G1 reboot series or animated movies that are either original stories based in G1 continuity or adapt the comic book stuff, both Marvel and IDW. I would lose my shit if they did an adaptation of Simon Furmans Time Wars. Or Revenge of the Destrons, where Prime and Megatron team up against Dezarus and his crew made up of Masterforce and Victory cons.

What Transformers needs to do is something new. We haven't had any real fresh ideas in this franchise since like.... the Unicron Trilogy. its always the same garbage retold, Optimus VS Megatron, Bumblebee and Starscream, some side characters they don't develop, big evil deceptiman want to take over the world, some unimportant human characters etc I am beyond sick of Optimus Megatron and Starscream, let alone Bumblebee. I want something new. I want them to take risks like they did back in the 80s and 90s where new commanders would show up, where different stories got told, where new corners of this franchise got explored.
I think people over hype the late IDW run. A LOT of fans jumped off when it became a super woke fest and tumblr relationship drama.

I get it, some of you like G1, but can we please move on? Do something new? I'm am sick of seeing the Autobot vs decepticon formula (or the maximal vs predacon). I am really losing interest.

well... idw wasnt auto vs decep in the traditional sense (not in the era we're really hoping for)

I'd like to see cartoons of EARLY IDW stuff. That Cyclonus+Tailgate "relationship " stuff and the Lost Light era trash, no thanks.
