Probably because many people thinks it's a kids movie, the 3d cartoony style didnt do it any favors even though its beautifully animated and the trailer also felt tailored to children.

@XsCrib Yeah, but it was poorly received. Great marketing is what helped those movies, as the trailers always made it look good. They hit a new low with the Mark Whalberg movie with how bad it was, and by the time we got to the next one, you could see the huge decline in the numbers.

The film is significantly more adult than the marketing suggested. And that may have been the problem. The core Transformers fans are adults now, but the trailers made it look like a kiddie film when it most definitely is not.

I honestly would’ve skipped this movie if I wasn’t a movie fan. The only reason why I changed my mind was because of the KZbinrs that explained how it wasn’t a kids movie like I thought it was. Someone who doesn’t watch reviewers would probably assume it’s a toddler movie based on the 1st trailer.

I saw it today & one of the ushers came in during the 2nd post credit scene and asked me if the movie was actually good because he was really skeptical about watching it at first but after watching that post credit scene he said that his interest was peaked and might give it a chance. So I think promotion and tone in the trailers didn't do this movie justice.

You misinterpret the “it’s animated” stance. Specifically for TF, people expect it to be live-action now, and when it isn’t, the impression is that it’s kiddy. The first trailer obviously reinforced that. Adults go to watch and/or bring their kids to watch Inside Out and Minions because the former is known to have mature themes, and the latter is just a good laugh for all.

I was surprised by your positive review and went out to see it. I LOVED THIS MOVIE! And you’re right most people don’t think transformers are cool anymore but if they would have shown some of the more serious scenes from this movie I think more of the older audience would have went out to see it. Pg rating was weird I agree, maybe that played a part in it looking more childish than it really was.

100% due to the animation. If you weren't already a Transformers fan, you can only go by trailers, which, let's be honest...wasn't special. If I hadn't been invited to watch the movie with a friend, I would have continued to think of it as a kids animation. Reasons I believe Transformers One underperformed: 1. That first trailer made it feel like it was strictly a kids movie, adults without kids felt it can be skipped or wait until digital 2. Parents that saw trailer and it as only a kids movie were going to skip out on this movie, because we are at height of the beginning of the school fall semester. Parent got their kids too busy with homework or extra curricular activities to drop all that money for a afternoon at the movies. 3. This was a summer block buster that was put in the dead season of movie watching for everyone, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse was put out in a similar time frame and got $35million opening weekend and I believe it got a bump in ticket sales cause of the popularity of Spider-Man Homecoming during the same summer blockbuster season year. Timing is everything

It’s been 4 days. FFS. Plus, everyone who actually likes Transformers beyond the live action normie crap LOVES this film. I love Dark of the Moon, but I’ve always had to make excuses for why it’s my favourite. But with this film, I don’t have to, because it’s a genuinely great movie, I feel proud to show my love for it. People have a short memory. Having a darker tone and good marketing wouldn’t of done anything. Look at War for Cybertron (game) its serious, has a dark art-style, was riding on the popularity of the films and has the same setting as One. It was a commercial failure, but the actual fans supported it and it got a sequel.

Not helping is the fact that one of the producers consistently claims it’s part of that universe when it’s so obviously not. Nonsense to suggest that this being animated didn’t impact the box office. This is a live action franchise now, most casual fans aren’t interested in it reverting back to a cartoon. I’d be very surprised if the War of The Rohirrim movie doesn’t suffer a similar fate. It’s not an apples to apples comparison to Minions or Inside Out which have only ever been animated. In Mexico and all of Latin America the film was dead due to the very, very bad decisions made in the Spanish dubbing, bordering on misleading marketing with the revelation of startalents a few weeks before the premiere when the trailers initially showed an impressive cast, this even alienated Transformers fans who now refuse to see the film because in most theaters there is no option to see it in English.

I work with a few transformers fans (80’s cartoon fans). And brought up Transformers One and they had no clue. None! That this movie was coming out. I told them you need to see it. When I told them it was animated, some of their reaction seemed non interested. I even had two coworkers say they’ll wait until streaming.

I don't see how this movie would need a PG-13 rating, it's animated robots.. and that one scene where someone gets ripped in half is barely shown.. the camera pans away from it until he's already ripped in half so it hardly shows anything

I’ve not seen it but I’ve seen in the final trailer that someone’s arm (Shockwave I think) is ripped off by Optimus. That’s not gorey? Okay, sure mate.

Saw it. I knew many who didnt even know about it. However when shown it, it looked childish. A lot of the looks did look a bit childish. I still think it's second to 1986 movie.

I was born in 1994 and I am huge Transformers fan, I have seen every cartoon and every live action movie and I saw Transformers one and I loved it. Its sad that its not doing well because I would love to see more in this animation style. I know a lot people would of wanted a full CGI animated movie like the beginning of bumblebee. I would love to see that too but I would love to see a sequal to transformers one and see it continue but see the box office I don't know. People go watch it and make it have legs and earn more money in the next few weeks and it should make it

Just speaking for myself, I didn’t wanna see this initially because the animation looked like it was targeted for little children. It wasn’t until later that I heard the story was actually amazing.

My 2 reasons why TF One flopped: 1. It all started with TF4&5, the WORST ONES. Those movies particularly TLK were so bad they made so many people give up on the films regardless of how good they're turning out now since Bumblebee. I like Michael Bay but I admit that he killed the franchise's further potential. 2. The TF films just aren't the big events they once were. Back then everyone was highly anticipating the next one and now that energy is sadly gone. Not just from G1 fans but even my generation the Millennials who have enjoyed these films more than they have.

I’m in my 50s and I still talk about the Transformers. My theories and facts of why Transformers One underperformed are; the first trailers are terrible and low marketed, Peter Cullen isn’t voicing Orion Pax / Optimus Prime; core fans aren’t watching, it looks like another alternate reality in the Transformers multiverse after Cybertron War, Combiners War, Prime and Beast Wars CG shows.

Sadly, as much as I loved the movie, it's at an unfortunate intersection. I have a lot of friends who grew up on Transformers and loved them, but the trailer just turned them off. Those same people also commented that Transformers One is too much of a "kid's" movie, and THEIR kids aren't interested. So if your kids aren't interested, and you think it's going to be a goofy kids' movie you'd have to slog through, why would you want to see it? Sadly, I think if they had started with a more mature trailer, they'd find that kids not only like to be treated like they are more mature, but the adults would have more of a reason to want to take them to watch it. I also think there is a bit of a franchise glut right now - Transformers, Marvel, etc. - many of these brands have been dominant in the theaters for a long time, and I hate to say it, but I think people are bored of them. That means if the first trailer doesn't grab someone's attention, they probably are not in the mindset to give a second chance to a franchise that's had a ton of disappointing iterations. I hope word of mouth lets them catch up later - or they hit it big on streaming (I have to admit, it's primarily the cinephiles that are going to theaters, and they are more tired of these franchises than the rest of us - my area will not even carry this movie, I had to go out of town) so I think that's a genuine possibility.

I work in retail, and my job has had a huge store display of Transformers ONE and other Transformers products to promote the film. Many other stores in the US have, although I do think the Transformers ONE toyline fumbled in some ways that past Bay Transformers movie toylines haven’t. I think those films had a much better grasp on how to get kids interested enough in the toys to want to see the film. They used to do continuous waves of figures with character bios and eye catching packaging. Transformers ONE also did have a couple popcorn buckets as well. There was the Optimus Prime one that was also a cup, the AMC one that lit up, and a couple others. There was a transforming Orion Pax one that I think got cancelled that probably would’ve gotten more eyes on the film, but it hasn’t been spotted in about a year now.

Regarding John’s animation argument, while it’s true that animated movies like Inside Out 2 and Minions are doing great at the box office, I will propose something else. Is it possible that maybe people might be turned off by the idea of Transformers being animated? I think audiences, for better or worse, have become used to Transformers being a live action franchise. Sure, there’s been animated Transformers content before but this the first time since the 80s that an animated Transformers movie was released in theaters. Going back to Inside Out and Minions, those were always animated franchises; it’s not like those were live action franchises and they suddenly decided to make an animated film. I’m someone who loved this film but even I must admit the idea of a new animated Transformers film was weird when I first heard about it.

It’s because it’s extremely rare to see long legs on a movie. And even if there is, you can estimate weekly drops from the initial box office to roughly gauge how much it’ll make.

The PG rating might be because they are robots, not people or animals and therefore, somehow the violence, no matter how gruesome might not be considered real? Supposedly to get a PG rating for the original 1986 movie, they had to add in a couple of lines of swearing, and just look at the kind of violence and death in that!

The trailer made it look strictly like a kids movie, and I agree that they didn't put much into the marketing. Animated movies usually have great legs at the box office, so with good word of mouth, it can do what Elemental did.
