Terry I can't applaud you enough for not settling when things don't quite "feel" right. As a viewer, the journey to bring your vision to life is more interesting than the final outcome as stunning as your creations are. I don't care how many times you have to change your mind to get there so long as you are true to yourself. A change in direction indicates to me that something amazing is about to happen and I'm here for it ❤

My hat’s off to you. It’s quite an undertaking. As someone who has marbled an entire mirror maze and done a little of what you’re attempting, I can tell you that the biggest challenge is in creating enough variation in grain so that it feels natural while keeping the whole project ‘of a piece’. You’ve also got a lot of directional changes and tight panel mouldings to contend with. So good luck, I’m sure it’ll be fantastic when complete.

When I was renovating my house in Australia I decided on the principal of a unified scheme throughout. So the main scheme was the traditional red green cream combo. But in each room the proportions changed. The living /dining predominately cream with touches of green and red/pink. One bedroom became the red room with smaller amounts of cream and green; the green bedroom with red/crème combo etch. This allows for an overall scheme with differences. It works for me and 20 years later people still comment about how lovely my house is. Just a thought boys.

Terry: Having worked a lot with faux wood painting using a latex base and then a stain/varnish you will learn that UV exposure and dehydration of the oils will lighten the panels substantially in a year or two. For this reason I would suggest going with your first darker panel. It will lighten.

A suggestion re: the wood finish. There is a product called 'Retique It' that you paint on to pretty much any surface & you can then apply a stain over it & it looks like wood. It has little wood fibres in it. Could be a good middle ground between Tracey wanting to paint/do something more simple to execute & Terry wanting a timber finish ❤

The faux woodgrain looks great. What a gifted artist you are. If it's 'easy', as you claim, then crack on! Though, I suspect that 'easy' for you might not be as easy for the rest of us. You've acknowledged the enormity of the task, so you clearly feel that it's doable. A century ago, faux finish artisans were trained and practiced at the art form. I've seen it done with glorious success in stately homes. I trust that you will be channeling those ancient artists while transforming the room. Bonne chance! ❤ from TX!

Using an oil based tinted glaze with a wood grain rocker is a much easier and quicker way of creating a natural wood grain effect. Not sure what you are using but oil glaze stays wetter for longer so you have a longer working time. You can create various grain effects with different rockers by varying the drag and rock and can soften with a badger hair brush.
