The little ball on the back side of your glass cutter is not for you to press down harder while scoring. The ball is to tap the glass along the glass cutter's score line which "opens" the cut. This usually prevents the need to use pliers and the glass comes apart much cleaner. Part of the reason you are getting the "left over" edges you need to remove is the fact that you do not use a straight edge. Otherwise thanks for taking the time to make a tutorial. Also, run your "soft edges" first, then grind in to the score line. This helps prevent the chipping.

Thank you for the information, I've got another piece to try that on

Hey I know I'm a little late to the party but can you elaborate on that last point? What are soft edges? I'm relatively new to working with glass (only on a small scale though) but keep finding small chips when using my rotary tool and diamond tip. Thanks in advance!

Man I used a straight edge but didn't ball tap until 5 minutes before the video haha thats why I'm here

Sir i hope u will notice my msge.. 🙏 how can you polish a mirror for a smoother and clearer sides? I observe that if u use sanders for polishing, theres a white scratches on the edges after... is there smthing you can do to make the edges more clean and smooth and clear?
@dustyguy4 ай бұрын
If you keep sanding with the grain it will clean up and clear up the edges

I had 2 panes to trim 1-2mm off side & one end. I used a Makita belt sander with 120 grit but found this too slow so used 80 grit. Clamped using wood on 2 sawhorses. Holding the sander upright I went from side to side slowly not too much pressure but only staying in one position for 2- 3 slides then moving along till I got to the other edge. Once I got to the end I started at the start again. I also put an angle edge top & bottom of the side I was sanding just run from one edge to the other once. This stops chips when getting hot.Water can be used but go slow & you won't need it. I would stop every so often but managed to get the job done. Important to wear gloves & googles & clamp your glass. Watch the ends as can rip the sanding discs.

next time, use a straight edge and go from one edge to the other in one clean motion and you will have a straight cut with minimum sanding. also clean glass first of junk.

You need to use diamond pads with glass. It’s sandpaper made with rough diamonds (not expensive)

Makita paint sander with 80 Grit sandpaper for all the big chunks of glass, the belt sander with 120 or 150 grit for first finish then 180 for the final clean up and roll the edge. Thanks for asking and watching

@ianpin1002 жыл бұрын
sorry but should be titled "how not to cut mirrored glass" don't need oil but do need a straight edge also don't use a bit of wood to snap it as it does not put an even pressure across cut. Put dowel underneath and just gently tap simples!

that looks like t-totally holy hell.....4-5 beaks and chips, underneath, on the corners. that was a overall total fail, maybe it would be ok to use in a outdoor shop situation, or something similar, but who would hang that in a house, it looks like crap. function only, actually you could have left it like it was after you snapped it, before you got the pliers a hold of it. i mean it had a few places that did not break evenly, but no worse than what it is now
@scottydntno7 жыл бұрын
what a shitty break. defeats the purpose of sanding.

I love your videos! I watched both of the mirror cutting videos and it's just what I wanted to learn about because I want to cut a 1/4" inch piece of bathroom mirror in half and make two of the door mirrors. Can you tell me if I could hand sand the rough edge as I don't have a electric sander? What you ended up with will be just fine for me, if I don't manage to kill myself. HA! Thanks
@dustyguy10 жыл бұрын
If your going to try to hand sand it go to Harbor Freight and get a diamond hone from the area where there sharpening stones are. It about 2" wide and about 6" long with about 50 diamond looking cut outs. Gets two pair of heavy duty gloves (incase you slip and cut one pair you have an extra pair). keep a bowl of water close to dip your hone as you are rubbing the edge of your mirror . This is going to take a while doing it by hand but be careful and have someone help just in case. don't take long strokes use short strokes and dip it in water frequently . let me know how it comes out.
