Transforming a Quarry into a Lush Tropical Paradise: Mark's Epic Garden Project!

Today’s video is a return to Mark Goodlad’s amazing topical style Tiki garden in North Lincolnshire, England talking about his exciting and ambitious tropical style, exotic and jungle garden plans! We start off sensibly with building, planning and planting a raised bed with shade tolerant plants next to his garden office - hopefully a practical on series looking at small garden / border design, how to choose the right plants and space them out will be helpful. There might be chance for a tropical style plant shopping video or two too! Being a sheltered shady spot, this triangular steel raised bed will be perfect for tree ferns, palms, Fatsias and all kinds of exciting exotic plants. Following, that though, we move into Mark’s huge garden project and look at his plans for three acres of quarry! With a natural spring being developed into a fish-filled pond, a mixed wooded area calling out for some hardy exotic planting (Schefflera, tough evergreens, ferns, bamboo etc,) an oriental style / Japanese garden, a huge expanse of sunny grassland ready for a vegetable growing polytunnel, classic car garage & workshop, bee hives and all kinds of exciting garden projects - this is a huge undertaking and one I’m excited to see develop! I'd like to say I've moved on from my jealously after first seeing it to now being in a place of appreciating it being owned by somebody with the ambition and opportunity to do it justice but that would be a lie, the jealously is still there haha! Nahh, I'm really pleased for Mark and it could really be something special, incorporating the most exciting exotic styles and themes of gardens like Wisley and the Cornwall valleys. I love tropicals but that shaded space would be fantastic for a Japanese stroll garden especially with a water feature. Acers, ornamental cherry trees, dwarf pines, bamboos, moss, ferns would all compliment the office.

I'm with you there, personally I think a hybrid of both would work well, linking the more tropical planting that's already round the house with the potential Japanese planting lower down around the woodland. Dwarf pines, acers and ferns would all work visually really well with some tree ferns, bamboo, Fatsias and maybe a palm or two wouldn't they - and all the options would look great next to that dark office!

This will be a fantastic project!! You guys are too funny! I think for the 13:00 part/view from the office, looking down onto the land for low growing plants, keeping it simple with Liriope, aspidistra, & harts tongue fern- mass planting the aforementioned. I also might plant a couple clumping bamboo’s to make more of a framed view as well. Holy smokes, that’s where Gunnera is meant to grow, down near that little natural springy pond thing! In the open meadow, I would definitely leave a significant portion of the back of the property just totally wild, and let nature have some space for herself. Also some bamboo forest: maybe even some of those Bamboo’s that Dr. Simon was talking about that are super aggressive and see how much they spread.

Haha thanks, it really is an amazing site for any kind of garden development and as you say, has the perfect spots for a framed view at the top, shade and damp loving plants below and a bit of experimentation further along and down the slope. Thanks for your plant recommendations and I completely agree with your selection of plants and keeping it simple. As for your comment about the 'meadow' / base of the quarry - as I've replied to other people I also think that's a great idea for wildlife, the bees Mark eventually wants to keep and in terms of which plants thrive on shallow soil in an exposed site. Whilst some choice bamboos are likely to feature around the small wooded area and along the base of the slope I think that further out into the meadow, a mix of natives along with a bit of prairie style planting, some tough and wildlife-friendly, perennials, grasses and Mediterranean planting punctuated by some Eucalyptus and unusual pines would be sensational. So many opportunities and I'm pleased I'll get to hopefully see and share this project developed by somebody with the ambition, ideas and opportunity to make the most of it!

That would be a fantastic option and for something like this, I'm absolutely I agreement. I'm presuming the soil at the base of the quarry is poor as the grass hasn't established very well so it could be perfect for some wildflower planting augmented with some prairie plants and perennials. If you're going to keep bees then it would be the perfect lower maintenance and resource use for a lot of the flatter land. Throw in a few well chosen trees and you could really have a special landscape for sure.

It is indeed mind blowing and ripe with potential! You're no being silly at all, I imagine Mark will be keen to have a bamboo forest on the 'lower slopes' if not taking up the whole site! Heligan in Cornwall has some fantastic wooded slopes with a mixture of bamboo and hardy exotic shrubs leading down to bananas etc as you get lower and the soil / water levels improve and that would certainly be possible here. It will also please you to hear that Mark is already mulling over a Waggy forest and loves his Eucalyptus like me - that expansive plain is absolutely calling out for some stately and graceful Eucs isn't it! Believe me, if that was my place I'd hardly be without a shovel in my hand, what an opportunity...

Oh yes, it's a big project indeed! A huge waterfall would certainly be awesome but yeah, you're right, it would eat into the pennies! I think the first priorities are to settle onto a design, get the earth moved accordingly and the woods cleared of damaged / diseased trees then you'll really know what you're dealing with won't you. Then the real fun starts!

With that much area to play with, it certainly makes sense to expand the water area, potentially running it further in front of the trees to really add to that amazing view both looking down and from the far end of the plot looking back and seeing everything reflected! It certainly is, what a place! It's near an old lime sidings / cement works or something like that but this area was actually quarry and is quite rural. Time, resources and cash will all be needed but the single biggest factor has definitely got to be ambition and I'm so pleased Mark sees real potential where many would see obstacles and problems. You're completely right and I'm excited to see it slowly come together and evolve, playing whatever small part and sharing it where I can!

Oh definitely and I completely agree with the saying. That being said though, getting the structure in within a few years and using a lot of bamboo, grasses, wildflowers, Eucalyptus,ferns and exotic shrubs etc. will certainly see dramatic changes within a decade whilst the other trees and planting develops. It really is an exciting project and one that, as you say, really does have the foundations. Give me a wood, lake, cliff, plain and potential over a square field any day!

I am sure you and Mark will have many a sausge party under the canopies :) What species of tree are healthy and growing in and around the ravine? So many trees in the UK have some sought of blight. Bleeding canker is rife amongst horse chestnut in Milton Keynes. Ash has a lot of issues also as it reseeds everywhere. I would be pissed if one of them was growing through my tree fern!

Yep! I believe it's a mix of Ash and Sycamore which there's nothing wrong with as such but they're clearly the volunteer trees that have quickly grown in the part of the quarry with moisture and an adequate amount of soil. Personally I'd go through them as I imagine Mark will, removing the dead, diseased and potentially unsafe trees along with a crucial few that may be restricting plans then replant a blend of other trees offering greater ornamental, habitat and longer term value. Even though it's mainly Ash and Sycamore, having the small wood to start with is certainly an asset that'll add a lot to the garden plans and planting possibilities!

That's very kind of you and I've got some plants that may well find there way into Mark's garden too (nope, not Gunnera before anyone phones DEFRA!) but I think at this stage, the best thing for a space like this is to really think big in terms of what earth is going to be moved, the practicalities and making the best planting areas possible. Then the fun starts and I'm sure Mark will be building up a forest of seed-grown plants as we speak!

The land at the bottom is screaming large pond/lake. Of course Mark could use the Gunnera that George gave him prior to the ban, we all witnessed that transaction. Didn't we? I like the plain feel of the area at the bottom but the pond / lake definitely needs extending beyond the tree line to really open up the planting opportunities (legal ones obviously). Your comments did make me smile @David_Banner and @julieward8607 and you're literally not going to believe me but Mark did actually end up with a chunk of the Gunnera I (luckily) divided last spring! A chunk which I can only assume he has already planted down near the pond... I'm not remotely offended if this slightly tops my sunken fire pit project and there's definitely some planting ideas I've done that could be repeated on a much bigger scale...

One idea I would do is to extend the pond further out, make like a valley. 15 tonne 360 for a couple of weeks, do a site strip create the topography then dress the topsoil back over. They'll be more range of conditions for different plants , slopes for yuccas, evergreen trees on top of the highest mounds such as Holme oak, Sequoia, eucalyptus to slow wind speed and a frost canopy. Also the slopes act as frost drains. Fantastic potential.

Top ideas Henry and I completely agree with you. Pushing the pond out beyond the tree line would really extend the planting options and give it the grandeur it deserves. Mark is a big fan of Eucalyptus too and I think all the trees you suggest along with the banking would allow him to make the most of the space, views and planting potential he has there - maybe a tree line along the banking in the distance to the right would help to slow the wind down and mark out the boundary too. It's a big old project like you say but investing in a big digger and somebody who knows how to use it with the vision in mind for a couple of weeks really would be the best thing for realising the site's true potential. He's a lucky sod to have existing cliff faces, a pond, a small wood and a large plain already to develop isn't he! Let me know if you're ever over this way and I'm sure Mark would really value your thoughts if you can spare the time.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden definitely lucky to have some existing trees and slopes to get on with. With a nice open site like the bigger diggers can shift a fair bit fast. The big pond at mine took 8 days , but I could only get a 6 ton machine in , it's the site strip and topsoil dressing that takes the time, but well worth it in terms of what you can grow.Alot of people just dig and pile sub and topsoil together which is awful for growing in.

He certainly is Henry and yes, I think you're right in how quickly it could come together and I certainly agree that separating and preserving what little topsoil there may be in some areas really will be crucial. With the flatter area being the base of the old quarry, the planting options and subsoil might be very limited anyway so Mark will have to make careful use of what he has to avoid having to bring a huge amount in.

To be honest I think he would if he could, he's certainly got the propagation, entrepreneurialism and sharing spirit to make it happen. Whilst that would no doubt be a very fulfilling venture, I think there's a lot to be said for developing a garden and home purely for your own dreams and enjoyment though and keeping it largely separate from money and potential responsibilities. Choices, choices choices!

Oh absolutely, I'm excited to see it develop and it's great that you enjoy watching our videos together too! A lot of gardening can be so serious and regimented that it's great to have a bit of fun, experiments and ambition in there! Mark used to have his own vets' practice, he worked hard and built it up and now he works in a similar space but on a more paperwork / legal basis. Work hard, play hard I guess and I'm really pleased that an opportunity like this has come to somebody who not only appreciates the potential but has a chance and the ambition to pull it off!

Hi, just replied to somebody else with the same great idea! That would be a fantastic option and for something like this, I'm absolutely I agreement. I'm presuming the soil at the base of the quarry is poor as the grass hasn't established very well so it could be perfect for some wildflower planting augmented with some prairie plants and perennials. If you're going to keep bees then it would be the perfect lower maintenance and resource use for a lot of the flatter land. Throw in a few well chosen trees and you could really have a special landscape for sure.

Hi Goerge excited for marks venture and looking forward to see how it progesses had a thought /suggestion what about making a viewing platform area above the pond on the top of the bank that woild be the best vantage point looking down over the pond and would be a shame just to plant it up and block that view.

Oh yes, I'd certainly agree with that and I believe Mark will also be able to enjoy the view from further along at the back of his house once a few crucial Sycamore & ivy covered Ash trees have come out. A viewing platform would definitely be the place I'd gravitate to enjoying it from - seeing the ferns and other plants from above really would be a spectacle!

This land near an abandoned factory has the appearance of an old industrial wasteland and I would be very wary of the quality, the degree of pollution of the soil and the subsoil made up of fill : this can hold very unpleasant surprises !

It’s an old limestone quarry. I live in the old quarry owners house. It’s not wasteland per se and there isn’t any environmental contamination but the ground will certainly need a lot of improving.

Thanks for your comment @philippehoyez9398 and they are all perfectly valid concerns when dealing with old industrial land etc. As @markgoodlad4669 has said, any contamination will be minimal and luckily the site has sat for a while. With it being a old quarry, the topsoil is likely minimal and where present needs to be set aside and carefully reused as Henry has advised in another comment rather than being mixed in with the subsoil / gravel. Whilst in theory any design, hard landscaping and planting combinations are possible, personally I'd let the general layout and planting plans be influenced by the depth and quality of the soil across the site - the richer, damper soil around the trees being better for the lush and leafy plating Mark wants, the more exposed cliffs and drier base of the quarry better for more wildflower / Mediterranean / arid planting to make the most of the site with the least amendments.

Hi, personally I'd wait until late April / ideally May when the soil is warmer and they're actively growing. Any damage to the rhizome now might risk rot setting in and the soil is still too cold for them to settle in well.

Would be might worth to get some government funds to plant a woodland on the big grassland? A TWIG funded initiative maybe? Or just grow a forest of timber bamboo Kyoto style, that you can have as a backdrop for your japanese pond :)

That's a solid idea but to be honest I'd develop it to make the most of the habitats / topography and soil structure that's already there as I'm presuming a lot of the soil at the base of the quarry is thinner and lower in nutrients so maybe better suited to drought tolerant grasses / perennials & wildflowers etc. The existing woods and a potential shelter belt along the bank would be phenomenal with some added Eucalyptus for results within the next 10-20 years and investment pines etc to really add something special. I think there's just about enough space for a timber bamboo forest too...

Yes indeed, it comes with it's own limitations but also huge possibilities! I don't think they're many rocks on Mark's section of it but thanks for the idea - I think Mark would quite happily go for a huge 'rock garden' like Chatsworth if he could!

George, I need your help with a tree fern. I moved it yesterday and forgot protect it when I finished. Put of nowhere the heaviest snow we’ve had all winter fell last night… it was not forecasted! What can I do to try save this plant now? There was another snow in the crown… after having full protection all winter I’m just so upset by this

Hi, sorry to hear that but in all honesty, I wouldn't worry too much. What temperature did you get down to? Although less than ideal, one night of snow shouldn't make a difference while the new croziers should still be deeper down in the crown.

@@GeorgesJungleGarden Thanks for responding, it appears to have only got to 3 degrees but there was a lot of snow in the crown. I live by the ocean so rarely get snow. I was just concerned because I had just dug it up yesterday to move it? I had no mulch or protection... literally took it all off yesterday while moving it so the cold plus the move could've made it worse? Any steps you think I should take? Cut off old fronds? It's fully wrapped up now btw. Love the videos btw, really have made my journey into tropical gardening so much easier, You are my go to for all things gardening

Thank you very much and I appreciate your kind words. Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it at all. The new croziers really will be deep down in the crown currently and a night down to 3 degrees with some snow shouldn't phase the plant at all. I remember when I first bought one of my large trunks years ago, the protection I had came off and it experience a hard -2 freeze before I planted it but it came through absolutely no problem. I'd pop some fleece or straw in the crown to protect it from any late freezes but I'd leave the old fronds on until the new ones are pushing through - not too long now!

Very interesting looking structure. My thinking would run along the lines of developing the site as a public space design, but for private use, just like some old house and gardens become open to the public.

It certainly is an interesting structure @aquachimp1 and I like your thoughts. With a space like this the temptation is definitely to let it simply be a spill over of the existing and work on it a bit at a time but definitely thinking about it and designing it in terms of a public space would help when giving the end result the impact and scale that the space deserves. Exciting stuff!
