So a late comment but a couple of tips/thoughts, If you decide to board a ceiling do it before the walls (I know you aren’t, this is general purpose advice for others.) You should take the time to insulate the walls, it helps with noise and thermals so that your comfort is better. on the lower boards you should use some form of damp proof membrane between the concrete and the boards, it should be there for the frame work Being a rental and temporary I know those don’t really matter so much but if someone was to do this as a long standing solution then it all helps

Kablam! I decided that I wanted to do the same thing in my unfinished garage and choose 1 X 3 furring strips after I got "you aren't going to finish the garage with that wood (reclaimed pallets)" from the DW. I started at the bottom and after doing a short corner of the garage I noticed that the boards do not line up on the two connecting walls. I will do the next wall by starting in the middle as you did so wish me luck as I have never ripped a board before. Thanks for the video.

*_Kablam!_* I commented on a different video about this wall. This is exactly what I want to do to my shop. Except I might use pallet wood. A friend of mine offered me several pallets (like 50 of them) and they're all oak. I'm hoping to do this soon and I'll probably do a video on it too. I'm thinking about doing one wall in my living room where the tv will be. It's also going to cover up an old 1940s small but long horizontal window. I'm going to use pallet wood. KABLAM! When I first saw the result in another video you had done, on a completely different subject, I thought you had used old palates for lumber... which is what I plan to do. There are a lot of places in this town where I can pick up free palates, just so they can get them out of their way. I could get 'cleaner' ones for about $5 per palate, which might be worth it, considering three or 4 of those would probably cover the same space as a 4'x8' sheet (of whatever). I'm thinking that if I mill the planks to a consistent thickness, they would make for 'great' walls to attach things too. Things like cabinets, racks, or just about anything. The one thing I would do different is... 'put some insulation in first'. I get why you didn't want to spend that much on a temporary situation like that. For me, it would've been worth doing the landlord a favor, just to stay warmer while I work. Who knows, the landlord might even appreciate the insulation enough to give you a break on rent. After all, it would add a perk for the next renter.

Kablam! Approximately how large is your shop in terms of square feet? I am looking into getting into woodwork and considering buying a metal shed. Main issue is our local hardware store only sells them up to a 16ftx16ft and I feel that might be too small.

Very nice, one question, why not add some insulation? If yer in the shop alot, and I would assume going to be there a bit longer ..and it looks kind a chilly. That's why I'm askin.

My thought is that you LOST about 6 inches of width because what was recessed storage for the tools is now covered by the planks. And the tools are now protruding into the shop space.

You could start at the top or bottom, but you would have to make sure those pieces were scribed perfectly level
@Astrnauted

Late pro tip but, if you start with the measurement of your wall height and take the width of your board and the number of boards needed to run from top to bottom and start at the bottom row by scribing the difference of the board you should only have to scribe the bottom and be able to run full boards to the ceiling sorry I don’t know how to

Kablam. I understand that this is a temp space but putting some insulation between the walls would be nice plus fill the dead space. I still don’t understand why you did this. It was nice to have the recessed space for tools to hang without being in the way for a tight space.

@@SpencleyDesignCo my 1st “shop” using that term loosely was similar to your situation. Limited power, space and light. My second one was a 2 car garage but had to share it with the a car. I had access to the breaker box and was able to add several circuits. All the outlet boxes I added were quad boxes and added several fluorescent fixtures (pre LED days). Had 9 foot ceilings so sheet goods were easier to manage. Just had to deal with 1 support pole right in the center. After a while I discovered that a washtub would be nice. One wall backed up to a bathroom and was able to add one. Great addition. It was not climate controlled. Cold shop in the winter and sweltering in the summer. It was a fair shop in size but no natural light unless the garage doors were open. Life happened and my wife contracted Parkinson’s and reached a point that stairs were an issue. I had to get a ranch style home. Found a house with a 2 car garage and a full basement. When buying the house I was not thinking about shop space just handicap access. The garage is 500 sf and is as far away from electrical and plumbing as it could be. It was going to cost $8500 to get utilities to the garage so the basement became the shop. 750 sf of available space. Had access to electrical and plumbing plus it is climate controlled and has a few windows and a single door. The downside is winding thru the basement to get to the shop space, there are 8 support poles I have to contend with, the floor is 3” lower in the middle of the shop than at the walls and a 7’9” head height. It’s almost impossible to spin an 8’ 2x4 without hitting a pole. Now that I’ve bored you here is the final take for a shop attached to your home. 1. Easy access to electrical and plumbing 2. As much headroom as possible. 3. Vehicle access for materials in and getting projects out of the shop. 4. A level floor or slightly sloping to the door. (Got up one morning to 3” of water in the shop and had to have it pumped out). 5. Climate controlled space. 6. Natural light. 7. Plenty of open space (as few supports as possible) Sorry I rambled on.

7:05 This is Exactly Why you dont start in the middle of the wall, or the middle of the floor for example when doing hardwood/laminate flooring. Had you started at the corner bottom of the wall you wouldnt have that issue, nor would you need to rip boards for both the top and bottom. The top, probably but again you said its a temp thing so you could have left the top off to save cost. Roughly $200 for 20 sq ft is outrageous lol.
