Hey Jake, I'm a transguy that's been a year on T, and you can definitely retrain your voice when it comes to singing. Unfortunately , in the months where your voice is rapidly dropping (probably first 8 months, but it really varies) it's very difficult to train your voice. My voice would drop every week so I was constantly retraining myself before it settled. It's a good to keep singing as its dropping though so that you have more control. I decided to see a singing instructor to help though, because I had the skill, I just didn't know how to apply it. Don't worry too much man, you won't lose your ability to sing, you'll just need to keep training your voice.

hey have you heard of Against Me! ? the lead singer is trans and she writes about being transgender (the newest album is called 'transgender dysphoria blues') obviously i dont know your music taste or if you have heard of them but just in case ! they're a rock band and laura (even though shes mtf and im ftm) is very inspirational to myself

even if your current voice changes, you really do seem to hold a strong connection with music, so I'm sure that you will be able to sing with any voice that you receive, and it will be beautiful

Dude, hearing this aspect of what you have and will face, has only built on my love and respect for you man. I want to thank you for choosing to share your story with those of us that want to listen. :) Although you may come across times where you feel useless, unimportant, invisible... there are people who have come to take interest in who you are and what you do. You are extremely lucky to have all that you have. The talent, the relationships, the support from this awesome community of internet strangers. :) You not only inspire those from the trans community but others who may also feel different, out of place, people who struggle with not knowing who they want to be known as. Not only can your story help other trans individuals, it helps educate those outside of the trans community by promoting acceptance. Thanks again!

Really interesting video, and although I can't offer much (even as a trans masculine singer, albeit privately) , I can say, after showing your songs and covers to friends and family who don't know anything about you, they've all come back saying you have a lot of potential and all immediately go to he pronouns, so your voice isn't 'feminine' sounding at all. Also, when they've heard the songs without the trans context, especially songs like Mother, it hasn't seemed to register and they simply jump to 'it's a sad song'. I absolutely love your music and you're dead right in that mainstream music, even ones written about Queer topics, it's very generic and not easily relatable, where as your music is genuine and it's definitely been a bit of a saving grace for me, to be able to listen to music that rings true with my own experiences. It was a great video, and it really helped me think how I want to use my music and my experiences in the trans community. Great video, as always. Kai

The first time I watched one of your videos, it was a cover and I didn't know that you are trans, I percieved you as male, both from the looks and the voice. Hope that helps you as a feedback. I love your music!

Hey man! Just to try and relieve your worry, I was really worried about my voice when I started t. I will say, I don't really have a falsetto but you know what, when I hear myself sing now, it doesn't feel like some abstract version of my voice like it always has to me. Instead, my voice sounds like my voice! It feels like when I sing now, I am able to authentically express myself without being self conscious. You'll be able to sing dude! And you'll be more excited about it. :]

I feel the same about a lot of these things. I really want to sing but i have a lot of voice dysphoria and i'm just really excited for my voice to drop (when on t) because i feel like then i might possibly be able to sing. But even if i can't then i guess i have guitar? I don't know but its just something that i just had to say because i felt it really related to this video. Anyways i enjoy your videos loads and i hope you finally can get your necessity and not have to worry about "losing" your singing voice because i feel like if you had so much control over your voice previously that when it drops you will be able to keep around the same amount of control and unique sound you have already.

There are lots of guys with a good high falsetto and head voice, a lot of men are trying to make their voices lower but they are also trying to expand their range and go higher. It's tough being a musician and an entertainer with these horrible worries going through your head. It's part of your personal struggle, somedays you will beat it and some days you won't, but whatever happens, I'd love to hear more from you in the future.

I played your music to my friend and she thought you sounded masculine and was surprised when I said you weren't even on T yet- your voice is amazing!! The fear of losing your voice is very real and noone can blame you for being worried! It would be hard to lose your talent, especially since you love it and you've worked so hard. But honestly, I think you're gonna sound great! You'll have a different tone and maybe not be able to hit certain notes but you'll still be able to sing! Just work at it. Im a little insecure still but you just gotta work through it. You'll be fine, maybe better if thats even possible!
@kevinlee4692

If you are concerned about losing your voice because of T, then explain that to your doctor. That way you can start on a lower dose so that your vocal chords are less likely to be damaged. Also, see a speech pathologist (especially one with experience with FTMs) regularly when on T to help you ensure the safety of your singing voice and overall make sure your voice reaches its full potential.

you dont have to worry about your voice changing for singing because there are plenty of male singers who have been singing since they were children and their singing adapted to puberty (getting lower voice). It should be pretty much the same thing except just lower

I really don't think you will lose your singing voice when you go on T. That said, if it's comparable to voice breaking during puberty, it will probably take a while to find where your new voice lies. I'm not much of a singer but I remember trying to sing as my voice began to change and it just annoyed me because no octave seemed natural anymore. It was a few months before my voice settled and things started to feel alright. I know the pace of T is different but my point is, try not to let it get to you if you're struggling with your singing voice to begin with. It doesn't mean you won't be able to sing again.

You're simply not going to "lose" your voice from going on T, that just doesn't happen. What will happen is you range will change, your pitch, but you'll still be able to sing. Just like going on T doesn't magically grant a singing voice to people who couldn't sing previously, you won't lose your singing voice because of T. So don't worry bud.

Hey Jake! I have this presentation for this class that has to be a slide show and one of the slides is about who is the most influential in my life. My question to you is if you'd be okay with me having you on that slide? You are one of the most influential people in my life, musically and in my transition(I'm ftm as well)! The reason why I ask is because in the slide I say that you are Ftm and I don't want to be a jerk by saying something like that without the persons permission. You cool with it man?
