Transgo Pressure Regulator DIY Installation in ZF5HP19 Transmission

Here is everything I learned while installing theTransgo 5HP-19-PR pressure regulator into my ZF5HP19 Transmission. The car is a 2003 BMW 530i with 140k miles on it. I too did have the Transgo Pressure Regulator installed. First bought one from an EBay vendor. It won't go in after following all the instructions, and just had just taken it out from the freezer. Ordered a second one from an Amazon vendor, went in smoothly, just like yours! Thank you Willie.

Great job! The magnets are stock and are meant to trap metal debris in the trans. Next time use zip ties to fasten the gasket to the pan and then cut them off and tork the screws. The oil is supposed to be changed every 60000 km and it's not "lifetime". Bmw refers to "lifetime" the 3 years warranty period. As any oil in time it loses its properties, viscosity and collects debris. E39's and the rest of the generation were one of the first cars to implement the marketing of long life oils....with long service intervals, which is just a way to make the customer think that he saves money on maintenance, but on the other hand makes him go to the dealer more often for more expensive repairs due to not changing the oils in reasonable intervals. I personally do mine engine at 10 max 15k km or a year. And trans at 50 to 60k km. I think it's a bad ideea to cheap out on oil. It's the blood of the engine. Good lubrication means less wear thus longer and smooth running engines. My philosophy. Anyway, great work👍

@@williefast99 Happy to help with any advice. BTW the car look impeccable underneath. It deserves to be preserved, plus the fact that the M54 3.0 is one of the best Bmw engines. I think you should change the oil and filter on all of them! There are service kits on ebay especially for the 5hp19 gearbox. Just check the trans on RealOem via vin nr. It makes a big difference and in some cases huge difference. I advice to do all the vacuum hoses, Vanos+banjo oil feed line and Ccv, it's about 150$ of parts. But it's worth it. Just did it on a friend's 530 this weekend. Huge, huge difference after.

Yea, I have fixed a lot of stuff on this car before I started making videos. My third M54 so I’m no stranger to them. I am really close to achieving a light free dash, leak free car with all features working.

@@williefast99 what lights you have on. The vanos kit I have used apart from vanos kit it comes with valve cover screws rubber bushings and valve cover gaskets set. To diagnose fuel trims use Scanmaster Elm. It's very good and cheap. For every day code reading and coding Bmw Scanner, for the rest Inpa, Ncs , winkfp, Ista d. Use Newtis for repair info and wiring diagrams

Just got around to doing this and the shifts feel smoother. Still have the rpm drop issue in 3rd where I'd use steptronic and it would go into 3rd but jump up then back down but not as bad as it was

Great tutorial there,what issue did you have in the first place. I have the transfail safe light on from start up,I can run the engine for a few minutes,switch off and restart and the light clears. Code reader says Pressure Regulator Solenoid 3,I'm baffled.

Will this fix the P0741 code if the torque converter is working and not removed? If not, does the torque converter need to be replaced?

It is my understanding that if you have the 0741 code then you most likely need a torque converter.

So it is a pressure regulator and on my car it was blowing the seal to the torque converter due to pressure spikes.

I haven’t heard of that happening. It is supposed to help with pressure spikes but I am guessing there may be something wrong with your connection at the cooler.

The rings are for sizing the o-rings and freezing shrinks the whole assembly for easy install

So the cut ring goes on first then the o ring? The o ring doesn’t have to come off after being in the freezer?

Wrong oil in it. 5hp19 run on automatic synthetic 75w90 that is yellow/gold and named for example AG52 from mannol brand with spec TL52 162. Ain't matter if is used in BMW Audi VW Skoda or Porsche it always uses this exact oil. Red ATF fluid that isn't oil but FLUID in any variation Dexron 2 or 3 or any other isn't right for this transmission.

@@williefast99 no is not. Red is dexron 3 mostly and red is fluid not oil. Oil and fluid is 2 different things. There is no existing red that hold TL 52 162 spec. I do them boxes and german cars for a living for 20 years now.😜

You used the wrong automatic transmission! Only ZF Lifeguardfluid 5 may be filled into the 5hp19. This can also be seen from the green sticker on the oil pan

I do not endorse or promote any certain brand or type of fluids/oils. My transmission is working great at this time.

@@Felix-hm1ie - Of course, ZF recommends only using a ZF branded transmission fluid. That's called "marketing". But in reality, there are several brands of transmission fluid that are compatible with this transmission.

@@Felix-hm1ie marketing. any synthetic fluid will do. I add half a quart of engine synthetic oil to prevent fluid becoming too thin when hot.

@@wenzenuf221 I don't want to be rude but, I'm from Germany and I have contact with the engineer who is jointly responsible for transmission oil development at ZF and I can assure you that ZF would not bother if a Dexron III or Dexron V LV would do the same . Furthermore, the original oil is not particularly expensive, so why waive warranty claims or good shifting behavior, the fact is that ZF oil was specially developed for these transmissions and, like all other oils, is not multifunctional.
