A complication of Inferior alveolar nerve block when the anesthetic solution affects the Facial nerve due to the cost proximity of the Parotid gland to the Inf Alveolar nerve.
Due to the Anesthetic effect on the Facial nerve the structures which are supplied by the Nerve are affected resulting in the patient experiencing dropping of the affected side of the face - lips, side of the nose and inability to close the eyelid.
It is a temporary complication which will subside as Soon as the effect of the Anesthetic solution wears off which can be anywhere between 2-3 hours. Explain to the patient the situation and make sure that you prescribe lubricating eye drops to be used on the affected eye to prevent it from getting dry and cover the eye with a cloth or Sunglasses to prevent dust from entering the eye.
