The mainline Trans-Siberian railway doesn’t go through Kazan which is further south of Moscow. It goes through Nizhny-Novgorod and Perm to Yekaterinburg where Europe ends and Asia starts. It’s also the start of Siberia. Kazan is a culturally interesting city in Tatarstan and worth visiting only next to St Petersburg. The fastest train, Rossiya, takes 6 days and 13 hours or so to cover the distance. The slow trains are a killer unless you break in a few stations. The first class cabin, or Spalnyvagen ( shortened as SV) is very similar to the Kupe you travelled. Slightly bigger cabin and the difference is, it doesn’t have upper sleepers. Only two lower sleepers to each cabin and a luggage rack above each sleeper. The coach attendant is called Provodnitsa. Usually older females or babushkas ( grandmas). The restaurant car usually has decent food at least in the premium fast trains. They have some Chinese dishes as well. It’s not as bad as the girl makes out to be and the restaurant car used to be a good place to socialize with travelers like you from other countries, especially US and Europe. These days nobody is visiting Russia due to the fear of being held hostage. Back in 2017 when we visited for 30 days, it was a meeting point for all foreign tourists. Fun place to hang out. The locals don’t normally eat there because the food is expensive for Russian standards and they can’t afford to pay for it every time. But if you are from US or Europe, the food is very reasonably priced and edible. Not too many vegetarian choices though and Russian food is bland. Chinese is okay. The train to Ulanbataar which goes past Irkutsk before it turns into Mongolia has lots of Chinese options. So does the train to Beijing. They are also Trans-Siberian. The Russian trains cruise at 110-120 kmph and no more except Sapsan and the semi-high speed trains to Finland ( don’t run anymore) . But Russian trains maintain a better average speed than Indian trains. Go back and read the history of Trans-Siberian railway. It was built by the Tsar back then not for moving people but for mobilizing the military due to persistent threats from China back in the day. It was a terrible quality line back then with cast iron rails of poor quality and they used really terrible quality wood for sleepers making the route unfit for more than 20 mph. It was upgraded in late 1940s during Stalin era but mostly slave labor from the gulags and upgraded again during Brezhnev era in the early 70s to what it is today. Of course it was electrified only after USSR fall. The Japanese attacked and destroyed it during WW2 so they built another line that runs up north parallel to Trans-Siberian and north of Lake Baikal, as a security. It’s called BAM or Baikal-Amur line that runs north of Lake Baikal through Siberia and Far East. Beautiful and rugged line through some inhospitable Russian terrain. BAM is more spectacular than Trans-Siberian. Back in 2017, the full fare in SV on the Rossiya was around 44000 rubles but Russian trains have dynamic fares. Kupe fares should be about 22-25000 rubles back then. On Russian trains, the lower sleepers cost a bit more than the upper sleepers in Kupe. Same on Platzkartny class. Those side sleepers cost less and so do the upper sleepers. And lastly, Moscow has about 9 or 10 railway stations depending on where the trains go to. Kazansky is not the railway station that serves the Trans-Siberian route. It serves cities in the South, mainly Kazan and Samara and Rostov on Don and trains routed through Kazan to Yekaterinburg and onwards. Yaroslavsky station is the biggest and busiest where the Trans-Siberian mainline trains depart including the prestigious train Rossiya, the fastest one as well. Leningradsky is another big station that serves St Petersburg and up north trains including Sapsan. Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky are located in the same area called Komsomolskaya Ploschad and you get off the Komsomolskaya metro station for all 3 stations which are close to each other. But Trans-Siberian mainline trains depart from Yaroslavsky and not Kazansky.

For trans Siberian any special visa
@Abraracourix12 күн бұрын
@ The Russian visa is good enough. Unlike the Soviet Union, Russia doesn’t have many closed cities that require special permits. If you want to do the full length journey with stops, you need at least 30 days. You could do about 5 or 6 stops and spend couple of days in each. We did the whole journey with 6 stops that include Vladivostok and then flew out of Vladivostok to Seoul. You can also fly to Japan, if things were normal. Unfortunately, the flights into Russia is a tricky business now. But you don’t need any special visas to take the Moscow-Vladivostok train. You do need a Mongolian Visa or Chinese visa or both if you plan to take the trains from Moscow-Ulanbataar or Moscow to Beijing.
@Abraracourix12 күн бұрын
Also one more thing.., the letters you are reading on the trains… that’s Cyrillic alphabets and it’s not PVD as you keep reading but rather RZD or Rossiyskie zheleznye dorogi which essentially is the name for Russian Railways. Russian and other Slavic languages like Polish use Cyrillic script and not the English alphabets so what appears to you as English is not English and it’s read and pronounced completely differently. RZD is the abbreviation for the official name of Russian Railways which like Indian Railways, is fully state owned.

Full chill. Very cold outside. Very nice location. Very nice food u had. Very nice u saw a Siberian friend. Beautiful station. Very nice entry to station. Beautiful train. Very nice departure. Nice cabin. Very nice view shown from train. Very nice u have local passport to travel locally and international passport for foreign travel. A new concept of having local passport for local travel being followed in Russia. This is something like having ur ID card everywhere for use locally. A very nice one. Train moving in full speed. People here are very systematic and hygienic. They have no BAD idea of spoiling anything and everything they see or use.Enjoy drinking sudana rasam. Ur second AC is like first class AC of India. Nice toilet shown. Train has very minimal stops. Very nice u have a good English speaking friend to take u round. Saraku is very common for them in night. Very nice details given for flight and train. Opt flying instead of 9 days laborious boring travel. Nice short train journey. Nice singing. ❤❤❤😊😊😊

20:10 if you happen to be vegetarian beware of chicken or beef broth or fish broths 22:43 it’s a honeymoon phase to enjoy this cold weather . After 5 years you will miss sun ☀️. In a year most of the months will be cold, colder and coldest. Just 2-3 months sunny months . The number of sunny days one can experience in Russia varies greatly depending on location, but generally, most of the country sees between 60 to 180 sunny days per year, with the southern regions experiencing significantly more sunshine than the northern areas; for example, cities like St. Petersburg might see around 60 sunny days, while cities in southern Siberia could have up to 160 sunny days annually.
