When I lived in Foug, France as a kid in ‘65-66, we lived near a canal and by our house was a few locks, they also had a tunnel and we would watch the barges, waiting for the locks and tunnels. One day a yacht came through with an American flag and we started calling to them. They thought we were French, but we told them we were Americans. They asked if we wanted to see the boat and go through a lock with them. Of course we did and we ran over and tour the boat and then went through the lock. They were from Los Angeles and had sail from there, through the Panama Canal, around Florida and up the East Coast, then across to Europe. They then were traveling the rivers and canals. That could be a great trip to make some day, you would have to take the mast down, but still it would be a great trip on the canals, through the small towns like Foug.

+billyl allen - doing a canal trip through France is definitely on the list. Not sure if the expense and trouble is dropping the mast on this boat tindi it would be worth it but it’s easy to rent a boat for a week or two.

Uncle Daddy Not many know or are fans of Nordhavn yachts sadly :( May improve as links of fantastic videos like this spread across the Inet 👍. Selene Ocean Yachts and manufacturers like it are better priced about 60c to $, but do not offer a MS model yet, and do not have the build quality of a Nordhavn

Transiting the Panama Canal aboard your own boat is a complicated experience that you have told us not just well, but to go overboard, brilliantly. We really can see and understand what it's like because of your work, done with the flair of a natural storyteller. Fantastic to see Cassidy present and fully engaged in the process. Looks like the transit went well and considering what it would of cost in fuel and time to go around the horn. Well I guess $2k isn't all that expensive. It took 8 days down to Panama, 10 days to transit and another 8 to 10 days up to SD, CA. That doesn't seem to long to travel from Florida to CA. Not counting the adventure thrown in for fun. Happy sailing.

You certainly don't want to make a mistake. Mechanical troubles are costly as well. From what I understand every extra day spent in the canal costs a few hundred dollars extra. It would seem the small monohull that couldn't keep up may have had to pay the extra fee.

Could you make a tour of your 56MS? What would be really interesting are the fuel switching from one tank to another, the stuffing box, oil changing system and stuff like that. What makes this 56MS be the amazing vessel that it is.

+John Baker - we definitely will. Have been moving the boat and still learning about her systems and running her every day so it will take a little time.

It's not necessary to have an agent so that a savings .. Standard sail boat under 50' is closer to $1100 after you get the $800 back if you don't mess anything up.. Plan on spending the extra day to pay your line handler's at $100 a day. You also need food and water for the guide per day. If you can bring cash from other places USD to pay the fees , you only will have one trip through the most dangerous city in panama. Because the city bank has no atm withdrawal so you risk wandering around the city with $2000 cash on you. They only except cash.... Bring a total of 10 fenders for your boat and that's a cost invested for your boat and no renting. They can just rent the lines at a less cost. So long as you have everything on the list setup and can do at least 5kn under power you should be fine to enjoy the trip. I'd absolutely love to do it on a massive boat like this one.

Sails surprisingly well. Motorsailers have a reputation for not sailing or motoring well but this bit seems to do both efficiently.
@johnmajewski10654 жыл бұрын
@@CassidysSailingTrawler I guess and possibly you can tell me by how in percentage does i cut your fuel bill? Is it by a significant amount in comparison to other standard Nordhavn the same size cruisers? I know by motor sailing (mine is a 50" masthead cutter rig) only (with no wind) with the main up, it is far more economical, motoring with the mainsail down,

If you want the adventure, it's an amazing experience. Though I can understand why people pay to have their large boats trucked from Galveston to the West Coast or back instead. Apparently there are easy routes for certain oversized loads from Galveston-Houston over the Rockies to the Pacific Northwest. Southern California might not be so easy due to highway considerations and the California's oversized load fees. I think they truck North along the eastern-front of the Rockies to Montana then across the mountains to the Puget Sound. ...Moving a large sailboat by truck here in the Northeast is near-impossible between dealing with the various State Turnpikes, the Interstates and crossing the suspension bridges over the Delaware and Hudson Rivers and up through Connecticut. Just moving a boat wider than 9-ft on a trailer gets expensive real-fast here in NJ just to haul down to the Jersey Shore.
@CassidysSailingTrawler5 жыл бұрын
+T. Bunker - I think this boat is likely too large to move by road without huge expense, not to mention taking the mast down. The 17 foot beam won’t help. We did get several quotes to move by ship from Florida to Ensenada, and at $44,000 decided it made more sense to move the boat on its own bottom. It’s definitely costing money but will be nowhere near $44k spent when we get to Ensenada.
@davidb78615 жыл бұрын
Great videos, hey I also have a trawler, can you recommend a good video drone for use with a moving boat? I’ve looked for waterproof or floating but they seem to cost 10x times a normal drone, I was hoping to spend less than say $300 or $400.......
@CassidysSailingTrawler5 жыл бұрын
+David H - I am very interested in a floating drone but the reviews that I have read make it sound like all of them are lacking in performance of the camera. The DJI drones are great and not that difficult to recover even on a moving boat with some practice. For that price poor you could get w DJI Spark. We used one for a long time and still keep it as a backup. It only has a 2 axis gimbal and shoots a max of 1070p are the only downsides.
