Transition Talks with DG Energy: How can EU electricity market design support industry’s transformation?
On Friday 17 March 2023, 13:00 - 13:30 CET, Cefic Executive Director for Climate Change & Energy Nicola Rega and Tom Howes, Policy Advisor, DG Energy at the European Commission discussed the implications of the proposed Electricity Market Design Reform and what it means for further (industrial) electrification of Europe, Europe's competitiveness and the EU Green Deal.
As recognised in the Chemical Industry Transition Pathway, electrification is a key pillar for climate neutrality and the chemical industry of the future. Electrically heated steam cracker, electrolysers, heat pumps: all of these technologies depend on the access to abundant and cheap renewable energy.
To make this happen, Europe needs an electricity market designed to support affordable, secure, and sustainable supplies to all consumers. One of the short-term actions listed under the “access to energy and feedstock” building block of the Transition Pathway is the reassessment of the electricity-market rules with the aim of making electrification cost-competitive for energy-intensive industries.
