Transitioning from a Meta Quest 2 to a Meta Quest 3 - VR is so cool!

I'm using the BOBOVR m3 pro. I turned off the 100hz in meta and now my headset recharges endlessly. I also added virtual desktop to my list and setup virtual desktop to run with the sharpening features of the snapdragon and maxed out sharpness. I dropped steam supersampling down to 70% even 50% works to offload the work of the pc. Game runs like if you maxed out at 500% supersampling. It just feels really good and it is eye bleeding sharp. it beats the offerings from steam as well as meta. I did note steam released an update that seems to have improved the sharpness but it still at the heals of virtualdesktop. one last thing I did was remove the facial gasket using the bobovr. It does not need it if you adjust the top strap just almost tight enough the keep the VR piece from shaking and now all the pressure is on the top part of the forehead instead of your eye brows and cheeks. The FOV is beyond improved as well. If you wear glasses, I recommend the eyepieces for glasses available for the quest 3. You will notice how godly automobilista 2 sharpness and quality looks with these settings.

Yes, I should really turn off the 120hz mode to help out battery life. Keep forgetting as there is always so much to do in VR. I played with Virtual Desktop a bit, but I found, in my testing, that it used Oculus debug tool when it booted, which I have set for using a cable link, so it gave horrible performance for me, unless I went in and changed the bit encode setting when moving between cable and airlink. In the end, Steam released their version of airlink and I use that now to play airlink games and use the Oculus app to play cable connected games. This means I don't have to change any settings. I haven't tried the facial gasket remove as I have gravitated away from halo straps to elite style straps. I plan to get some glass inserts once I can get my prescription from the optician. Once I have them, I will post a review.

Thanks for that, Paul. A recap of extras used in the description would be useful, perhaps? As I wear glasses my first consideration will always be if prescription lenses are available, and how to get them. I haven't seen this covered in much depth in my admittedly limited research into vr headsets, but since a significant number of people wear glasses, think it's worth covering.

By extras, do you mean the new headstrap I added, with the Battery bank? Or something else? Thank you for the suggestion about inserts for those who wear glasses (of which I am one), that's a great idea and I will be following up by buying some inserts and doing a review.

Making the transition myself, and maybe starting back up into iracing for at least a season. I've been in and out since 2008, when the original invites went out, but just sold my whole new cockpit I bought a year ago, with a reverb G2, as I wasn't using it enough. Now I have my old thrustmaster T300rs on one of my work desks, with the Quest 3. It's quite good. I did a few races last year, with the 2 and the reverb, and it was good, but this is better, and easier. Need to re-acquire some load cell pedals, and will watch your vid on the thrustmasters as they seem to be the best deal.

I think the T-lcm are a great deal, although of course the January sales are almost on us, so possibly worth waiting until at least then. I would say that load cell pedals are difficult to enjoy, in my personal experience, if you don't have anything to attach it to. A rig is ideal, a wheel stand might be okay. Or at the very least, a diy thingy to screw it down to. Something like this is better than trying to wedge it against the wall. That being said, Maybe before you buy load cell pedals, consider a rig or wheel stand first.

Thanks for the response. I've just upgraded to a 5800X3D and have a Vega64. Would that be enough for medium or low settings?

Hi, in theory, it does look like a cool system. But VR does complicate these calculations. You need a way to connect your Quest to the PC, if this is via WiFi, you need a decent router, if it is via cable, you need a decent USB port on your computer that's not too busy sharing the hub, on the mainboard, with other USB devices. So, I would say, it is likely that your system will work with the Quest 2 and VR racing, such as iRacing, but no one can say for sure. I did previously sim race, via wifi, using a 5g router, on a 13600k cpu and the 3070, and that worked fine, at 72Hz, so long as I didn't turn up too many settings. I hope this helps.

Not sure a quest 1 is going to work with VR racing, but I can't say for sure as I have never tried it. But I think compatibility is going to be a problem, you should check this for sure. Either way, if you want to link to a PC, you use the Oculus App, or you use Virtual Desktop, or Steam VR, and it's much easier to use these with controllers (for the oculus app, it's the only way to control it), than any other way, so I would say a head set with controllers is a must-buy.

Can you feel any latency between you and other cars when racing in iRacing in VR?

There are some netcode issues in iRacing, but probably not anything to do with VR as I've seen flat screen users see the same thing. I personally haven't seen any latency between me and other cars.

humm if i get the quest 3. 100% buying a 200 watt hour battery bank that can dump 120 watts down the line or however much the quest decides to ask it for.

I'm not sure if that would work, but one thing to watch out for is if the cable can deliver the rate of charge that you want. Either way, let me know how you get on.

I hope you are aware that pcvr perfomance is bound to your pc, not the headset.

Indeed I am. I did test the Quest 3 on the same computer setup as the Quest 2, so I am fairly sure my comments on performance are valid. Although of course, a better graphics card in my system would give me a better performance ratio. But then that would also be true of the Quest 2.

@@OlderGamersPerspective yes. I was wondering why you compared perfomance in pcvr. The only real hardware upsides are the panels, Wifi-6E and av1 encoding support.

I don't have a 40 series card so I couldn't access the AV1 codec or test it. Also same for wifi6e, so I was testing performance for those people in the same hardware situation as me. I will upgrade bits of my system, and will then run a comparison between 30 series and 40 series with the Quest 3, but at the moment, I think you can only do that through wifi, and only then through Virtual Desktop, which I had issues with when trying to run iRacing. So the comparison is really for anyone with a quest 2, who wants to go to a quest 3, but doesn't also want to upgrade the rest of their system or router. I think you are right, in a sense, but the quest 3 does offer a lot more besides the PCVR experience, which is why I reached the conclusions I did. All in all, the Q3 is a great headset, but then so is the Q2, but I think moving forward, the Q3 will become the better deal.
