Hi The habby , first thank you very much for all of your Tigrinya teaching videos !! It's helps me learning better 💪; I have 2 questions please relating the language 🙏🙏 : 1- Is there any difference between ቓ and ቃ Except the sound ? second question - how do I know what syllable to stress in Tigrinya words ?

Hey I'm Nien, I have an eritrean collegue and I knew he spoke Tigrinya so I learned it for him, to make him feel welcome (he fled to the Netherlands so I have to teach him dutch but I figured I could make him feel welcome atleast.) Your video's have been really helpful! I have one issue though, I identify as non-binary so I cannot say menyu shmki and not menyu shmka either. I tried to explain the concept genderneutral to him and he understands very well, but I was just wondering if there's an alternative to say my name. Because this seems to be a very "gendered" language. Could you do a video on that please?

Men Kbl Shim? Translate to, what name can I call you with? An alternative way to ask for someone’s name while avoiding gender related question. Hope that helps.

Hi Nien! That's kind of you to do. Thank you for the work you're doing. You present an excellent question and one I'm working on figuring out. It is a gendered language but there are ways to maintain neutrality like the example Nahom gave. Although neutral phrases might not be grammatically correct, native speakers will still be able to understand. When you're talking about yourself, it's easier since you don't have to be gender specific. That will be different when you're speaking to someone else or talking about someone else. I think the safer option is to use "they", which in Tigrinya defaults to the masculine plural "nsom" or "nsatom". Let me know if there are specific examples or things you've wanted to express and I can see how that would work out in Tigrinya.
