8 hours ago I didn't know anything about transmission's. My 46re was acting up and not shifting on time and downshifting into 2nd at 50 or 55 if I let off the gas. Thought for sure I was going to have to buy a new tranny. Thanks to your videos I was able to change the filter, removed and cleaned the governor pressure solenoid & did the band adjustment just as you described. Just got back from a test drive and all problems fixed! Shifts so smooth you almost can't tell it shifts. Thanks for the videos! Very much appreciated.

I often do hand feel tightening but since I am not familiar with vehicle work vs machine shop or gun work I have been hoping that the wrench I bought is accurate to ensure I get it right till I get used to how it feels in all these odd angles while working on soft muddy dirt and what not squeezed under my vehicle (instead of in a nice shop standing environment LOL)

I adjusted my bands for the first time on my 2003 Ram 2500 Diesel, with this same transmission being used in this demo. Didn't have a inch torque wrench, I loosen lock nut an then I tighten until it felt snug. Once I felt the adjustment bolt tight, I backed off 2 turns. I must say the problem between 1st an 2nd I had at times is gone. I ran my truck loaded all day on a 240 mile trip , not once the transmission acted up between 1st an 2nd gear. My transmission shifts smoother an like when it was new.
@Quadman808
@Quadman808 6 жыл бұрын
I would loosen that just a bit more, only 2 turns out is a bit snug on that front and you run the risk of pre-maturely wearing that lining. right around 2.5 Turns out as they suggest here is just about ideal, some run at 2 1/4 turns out but not more tight than that.

Great videos. These provide a lot of good info. However, the tranny is on a bench. I had to adjust the bands with the tranny in the truck. Used a crow's foot wrench for the nut on the outside of the case. I put a piece of tape on my torx socket and marked it with a vertical line - so I could tell the rotation. Still not easy but doable. I did everything listed in the video, and my truck is shifting great.

Hi Luke, the car had shown "Input/Shaft Speed Sensor No Signal" error and was recently fixed. The professional was not speaking English well and all I understood is that the input/shaft gear had to be adjusted to always send the signal to the "Input/Shaft Speed Sensor". I wonder could what you explained in the video be what he actually did to solve the problem. I would appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.

Quick question, I’ve got a 01 5.9 Cummins Automatic , Would the bands Not being adjusted properly cause the Clutches to not grab ( Slip when accelerating, an Burn up ? ) all out of No where I’ve got a Horrible Hopping and the RPMs go from Normal to 2grand - 2 1/2 when accelerating from 40 to 50mph. But ONLY does it in that range An Seems to be ok when Warm.. Doesn’t do it nearly as Often. Other then that she seems to drive great.. No leaks , Heat Gauges are Spot on. No grinding Or even Clunking into gear..

1:18 you say 72 in/lbs OR 8.5 ft/lbs, but is this not actually either 72 in and 6 ft/lbs? or 102 in and 8.5 ft/lbs? not sure how you gain or lose 2.5 lbs vs the in version, (in lbs divided by 12 to get ft/lbs) is there something we should know concerning the torque in these transmissions that cause differet torque measurements to be off depending on the division of the torq distance?

Ashroyer86 Try an experiment with a nut driver like he was using and see how far you’re turning a bolt/nut with each twist of your wrist. It’s not much at all. I didn’t actually count how many turns of his wrist it took to get the three turns of the bolt, but just mimicking the motion of turning a nut driver as I’m typing this, it looks like it would take about 4-5 turns to achieve one full revolution. I’m assuming he was looking at some reference mark on the top of the nut driver handle that was just out of the camera’s view to tell when he was getting a full revolution.

Another note is that not all of these transmissions will allow the use of a 1/4 socket. Mine required a square socket and anything above 2 7/8 turn back off of that bolt caused mine to slam into OD. Ended up adjusting mine to 2 turns out on both front and rear and it shifts great, not binding or slamming of gears.

Usually issues are with 3-4th gear shifts. Hence why it’s called “3-4” hard shifting, delayed shifts, no shifts.

You’re probably one to ask. I have an 01 grand Cherokee 4.0 with the selec trac 4wd system. When I go in reverse if I give it light throttle on level ground it backs up as normal but if I try to back up a hill or give it more than a touch of throttle input, it will feel like the transmission goes into neutral and then shutter as the revs come back down to idle and go back into reverse. My buddy who’s a mechanic said it sounds like my transfer case is spinning at this point and thinks it’s the tc chain slipping but I’m still wondering if it’s the 134k mile transfer case or the used transmission I just put in with 210k miles. I didn’t drive it much before swapping trans as I bought it broken with no park so I don’t know if this is a new issue or not. Could this be a band adjustment or is it possible it’s the transfer case? Some people told me snap ring but it still engine brakes when I downshift to 1st and overdrive and all forward gears and 2wd and 4wd modes still work but reverse still “let’s go” no matter what mode I’m in. Any help would be appreciated. I can’t find anyone who’s had this issue before

Correct; but it's pound-inch, and pound-foot, which are units of torque, or twisting force, as applied to a fastener; not inch-pound and foot-pound, which are units of work, as in the output of an engine. They're not interchangeable, but are often used (incorrectly) interchangeably.

The specs in the manual I read were 2 turns out for the rear servo and 2 7/8 out on the front servo. Not sure where you came up with 3 turns out for the rear. I try to make it less so there is not as much servo/piston movement on the rear servo as I have seen the spring retainer get pushed through the snap ring that holds it in. Also I recommend getting the heavy duty spring retainer on the rear servo and installing that because the OEM one is cheap and weak. This is the 46re I am talking about here and not the 47re or the 48re.

Not sure which manual you have in hand, these settings are ideal for everything for the A500 / 42RE to the 48RE Diesels we have come up with these over the last 22+ years tinkering and setting builds, please know 2 turns out on the rear and you run the risk of heavy drag on that drum or worse, stripping the lining. That rear band is rigid and won't stretch, therefore why we start at 3 turns. anything close to 3 turns as you suggest on the front and once it stretches a bit you will drop the wedge and strut down into the pan. Of course everyone is welcome to set their bands where they want, but these suggestions have Never Ever Failed Us. ** please know you can tighten them up, but our settings are for the best wear without sacrificing hold and performance.

Mines in a 95 Dodge ram 1500 4x4 46rh so not sure if it's square or 6 point like in this video. But the video I watched before this had a square 4 point bolt. But it was a 46re I'm tearing my pan off today to put a lock up solenoid, new heavy duty 3-4 accumulator spring that I got for $2.77 at a trans parts store(: discontinued at the dealership sadly. And I'm throwing a new filter and fluid and going to adjust the bands while I'm in there. Hopefully I will be able to drive the truck for a couple months before it fully blows up and I put a 5 speed in it and do away with these shitty 4speed autos...

When you're done just be sure to fill and top the fluid off while it's running in neutral. Also inspect the 3 wires going to the main harness connector for any possible shorts, repair as needed. There's no pigtail repair kit available so handle unplug with care.

achillestyler In laymans terms. The bands hold the outside ofthe planetary gear set drums in a certain combinations to give required gear ratios. Adjusting the bands correctly ensures that the bands are holding the required drums properly so your ratios are good and consistent.

I might be able to help but I'm no transmission guy. I went to factory Torqueflite school in the 70s. The instructor was a field service tech, engineer, and Mopar drag racer. He was a guy who as he put it "...thinks Torqueflite." He wanted us to be able to "Think Torqueflite." He explained the shift kicks. If things are the same today you may not have any problems with that harsh shift. In fact what a shift kick does is speed up the shift to eliminate time wasting slip. The slip is there for granny. Granny doesn't like being kicked in the butt when the transmission shifts gears. So the engineers build in slip, or slush, or slop. The shift kit makes that go away. It improves shift performance and durability because there is less slip. It also makes the shifts more harsh. I have a ZJ with a stock 42re. It's a slush box that could use a shift kit.

+CascadeTransParts Hello. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can help me out with... Why do you guys offer "generic" band adjustment settings, when in the factory Chrysler manuals, the band settings vary a bit from transmission to transmission? Seems that problems will arise sooner when you are out of spec. No? Also, what exactly is the purpose of the 3-4 accumulator spring? I just replaced mine, as it was broken when I removed the cover. My real problem is this... My truck's trans has a functioning lockup, but no 4th gear at all. Truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 V-10 4x4 with the 47RE transmission, with about 183K on the clock. It tows mildly, and it plows snow in the winter. I just bought the truck a few months ago and stupidly didn't realize that 4th gear wasn't functioning, or I would have never bought the truck!!! Anyhow, I was thinking about replacing the 3-4 shift and lockup solenoids (because they are "paired" together) next, but I really hate to just "parts replace" when I don't know if they are actually bad or not. As you know, parts ain't free. So, I'm looking for any suggestions you can offer me to check / test first. Is there an "in-vehicle" test that I can do to see if the 4th solenoid is functioning? Is there a test to see if there is a valve body issue? How about a test to know if you have a mechanical (clutch plates) failure? My guess is that to damn it mechanically, you have to get there by the process of elimination, once you have confirmed everything else electrically is working properly? What I'm wondering is that if it were a hard part failure (such as burnt clutches or stripped gears, wouldn't the OD be inoperative as well - or are there totally separate clutch packs that used for 4th gear and for OD? I've never been "into" an automatic transmission that deeply before. It's also my understanding that the solenoids are shifted (controlled) by the PCM, which controls the ground circuit. Does that make sense? If the lockup is working fine when in 3rd gear, does it make any sense that the 4th gear still does not engage at all? Bottom line is that if you didn't know the truck is supposed to be a 4 speed, you'd never know you have a problem... because hydraulically, it shifts fine through the first 3 gears. Where you realize there is a problem is when you look at your speedo and your tach (or listen to the engine's roar at highway speed). The engine is turning somewhere around 2,200 - 2,300 RPMs at 60 mph. You can't pass a gas station b/c the damn truck is only getting about 7 mpg! Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hello - typicall we prefer all questions go through our website so we can have actvie dialogue Regarding band settings - we have found for gas , diesel , small or larger models these band settings by far apply to the masses - there's very fine slight tuning that can be done to the front but not suggested for most as it's possible to strip the band lining off if to much tighter than this. you comment about this " process of elimination " is correct much of these repairs are just working through a list of possibles there's some ohm testing that can be done on the solenoids , but by and large they have to be tested on a solenoid dyno to know for sure the function. You may be able to dis-assemble the valve body and find something wrong also.. I can tell you with some amount of conviction with that many miles on it ; 99% of these trucks need our full solenoid service kit and a shift kit of some sort. Solenoids for these are somewhat wear items after a long period of time. Additionally springs in the valve body become tired , as you found with the 3-4 spring broken. dropping the pan may show you some of the more serioues problems if present. Sorry we can't comment of the Pcm of items beyond the central transmission itself. A very good start point may be our ATSG Technical Manual for these trucks see our part # " ATSG-48RE "

Unfortunately the Rear / Low / Reverse Band is captured inside the unit, and as a ridid band there's no way to swap it out unless rebuild. Worth Mention - We do stock a few longer band struts, which are the small flat apply plates. If I recall they come in .010" & .015 longer than stock : length differences Also If you have high miles on the truck or it's been ran with frequest towing hauling in town driving - the original ones may be a bit worn out which combined with the band stretching may cause your issue. ** The first and main concern is - does the existing band still have a good lining clutch material on the strap ?> the repair i mention may only be a band aid to help until a later rebuild can be done. we don't have the struts on the site, but they are in stock andf can be requested within the order notes if ordering other items such as a filter kit. Hope this helps some -
