Transmission FAIL: Why You Shouldn't Get Stuck in the Snow

Here's a teardown on a failed U151E automatic transaxle from a vehicle that got stuck in the snow.
Automatic transmissions work on the principle of planetary gearsets to achieve gear ratios. One of the three components of the gearset must be held stationary using friction clutches. The friction clutches are rings made of alternating metal and friction bands that lock up when hydraulic fluid pressure is applied.
When vehicle gets stuck in the snow, a typical driver's reaction is to rev the engine out to try and get the wheels some friction. This may cause the transmission's fluid to overheat, since the wheels turn at a very high speed in first gear, and a transmission cooler (if equipped) can not function when the vehicle is stationary. Furthermore, most drivers may also consistently rock the vehicle back and forth to free it from the snow. This cyclic loading on the clutches wear it down very fast as the fluid warms, and the friction clutch material can no longer hold the planetary gearset from rotating. The transmission is no longer able to power the vehicle since it cannot engage the correct drive ratio.
In this video a 2006 Toyota Camry 3.3L V6's U151E 5 speed automatic transmission is taken apart to explore the carnage of this failure. The vehicle had 360,000km on it. For the follow up related to this failure, please see these videos:

I have a fun story about getting stuck in the snow! When I was a teenager I had a manual Toyota pickup I used to drive around the back yard for fun. I occasionally took my sisters boyfriend out in the truck too. He was quite a bit older, maybe early 20s or so. If I would get my Toyota stuck in the snow in the winter I could rock it in gear to try and get it unstuck. You know, drive forward or back as far as you can, hit the clutch, let it roll back a ways then dump the clutch and push forward hoping to make some progress. Anyway I was at school one day and I come back and the sisters boyfriends dodge pickup truck is stuck out back in the snow. OK, I thought ill get it out real quick. I put it in reverse, no engagement.... Put it in drive, no engagement... huh... He had gotten it stuck and tried rocking it back and forth but it was an automatic so apparently he was shifting between R and D while on the gas trying to get it unstuck like how I did with my manual transmission. Needless to say he shredded that tranny.

My advice for anyone. Change engine oil with synthetic at 5k miles. Transmission fluid and filter change every 50k miles. And it will last a lifetime with such simple things.
@pliedtka
@pliedtka Жыл бұрын
The older Hondas or Mazdas wouldn't even survive 50k miles on single 50k fluid change. 30k is what Honda fluid change interval was until they switched to ZF transmission. Small tranny, limited fluid capacity, therefore more frequent fluid change interval. But you're right, most trannies need 50k miles ATF change intervals.

I suspect, based on the mileage, it was already worn out and was already slipping slightly. I don't see how spinning the wheels in one direction in the snow, even for a period of time, would cause the clutches to burn if it's already in gear. Clutches and bands only slip during shifts. The alternative is that the user rocked the car back and forth continuously. Additionally, they may have shifted while the wheels were still spinning while they were rocking the car.
@dil6969

Agreed. If the clutches are already locked, the only thing that should be building any heat during wheel spin would be the torque converter.

I think its likely they switched from 1st to reverse (or vice versa) while the wheels were still spinning out. i uh, mightve done that by accident sometime in the past and then smelled a lil hint of ATF from the air vents ... yea dont do that kids make sure your wheels arent spinning oops.
@theamerican7080
@theamerican7080 Жыл бұрын
It's the constant forced 1-2 power-shifts and the shock load on the clutches that burn them out when the car is stuck spinning just one wheel. The upshifts and downshifts create a tremendous amount of heat in a very short time, cooking the friction surfaces of the clutches and bands.

Wonderful video as always. I do not drive any more and cycle everywhere now. I have done this for a number of reasons. Main one is that I love cycling and other is I felt that all that mechanical and electrical technology that goes into cars these days is astounding. My back ground is mechanical and electrical and really do appreciate all that you show. My first car was and Austin Mini back in the mid 1980s. Look that one up and you will not find transmissions like that within. I feel most people do not appreciate all that thought that goes into one of those super transmissions when they press their foot on the throttle just to get their backside from point A to point B. How those solinoids energize sending fluid though its path way to a clutch piston. and all this done within the confined space of the transmission case. Also that the signal fluid is actually the lubricant too. Also what amazes me is that the solinoids do not short as everything is immersed in fluid. I decided I did not need all that technology and effort to get my back side from A to B. My two bikes do use similar gear system as that but without the clutches. I really love your videos and I am always comparing all that you show and explain with my Austin Mini. Where the engine sump and gearbox were all one.

You should know that oils, be they of natural origin or synthetic, do not conduct electricity at least when only 12 volts are used as the supply voltage. After 50 years in automotive repair I much prefer hydraulically controlled automatic transmissions to electronically controlled, hence NONE of my personal vehicles uses electronic control for transmission operation.

Good and complete tear down. This unit did not fail from just getting stuck in the snow. This condition usually results in hard part failure / broken parts and not friction failure. Wheel spin tends to create enough rotational inertia to slam the geartrain and drums when changing ranges Reverse to Drive. It’s likely it was failing way before this one event. Nail in the coffin however. The units tend to make it to 200-250k and then VB and solenoids wear out / stick solenoids and cause complete friction failure. Like you see here. It’s a Toyota but they all fail. Each newer Toyota design becomes less reliable than the previous. The next iteration U660s are almost throw away units now.

It seems like he mostly focuses on reliability and serviceability when he takes things apart. ZF 8-speed is considered the best not because of that, but because of its performance. It's able to do double duty of a comfortable and smooth daily driving, but also has near dual-clutch transmission like performance when driving on a track or back road. Releasing is actually the reason the friction material on clutch plates is grooved, not "bite" or grip. They've got pressure to stick together, but once together they've got no force to pull apart. Until fluid can get back between the friction discs & steels they're stuck, and that causes heat & wear. There's always a little fluid in the grooves, so the discs release quicker.
@danhg3885
@danhg3885 Жыл бұрын
A good explanation. It’s like getting your boots stuck in mud when thinking of a wet clutch release. Smooth clutches tend to have improved torque capacity but release behavior is slower. Oil channels / grooving / waffle patterns all improve release characteristics of the friction disc by proving fluid paths and cooling. You tend to see static clutch locations use smooth frictions (applied continuously) and dynamic clutch locations (shifting) use waffle or grooved.

The surface area on the frictions and steels isnt very much on this particular unit.. Combine that with hardened leaky seals (insufficient apply pressure) and you have clutch pack failure, something that wasnt often seen with older (and superior) heavy duty transmissions such as Ford C6, Chrysler 727 Torqueflite and to a lesser extent GM 400 Hydramatic. While the Toyota sourced automatic used in older Jeep Cherokees was also rock-solid, the front wheel drive ones are not under severe service conditions.

The crazy thing is most cars today you can't even check the tranny fluid there's no dipstick... Which is ridiculous to me... since I don't have a tranny dipstick on my car I just go to the dealer and get a changed every five years, It's 200 bucks they flush out everything, and they replaced the filter.. Mazda 6... I do it myself but it's a huge pain in the neck mainly because you need to have a car up on the lift and you need to be able to see the full drain plug At a certain engine temperature and it needs to weep out of the hole.. I don't have a lift and it's a pain in the neck it's actually the only thing I'll never do on the car , Just cheaper to have a dealer do it.. I had to do the CV axle on the car and on this particular car You do the CV axle you lose some of your tranny fluid.. so I had it done at the dealer, After they replaced my manifold Cat converter for free.. Which in itself would've been an $1800 job they try to get out of it but I know the car has a federal warranty of 80,000 miles the car only has about 60 at the time still out of manufacture warranty but not federal warranty is up to 80.. The owner of this tranny must've really beat the crap out of it those things last forever pretty much if they're taken care of

Mr speed car. Can you do a video explaning why you should NOT change tranny fluid if it has not been done consistently on an older car? I have a 2001 montero w 191000 miles (bought it at 113,000) and the tranny is running fine but I have been warned better to just keep the old fluid in as it is thicker and was told new fluid will make tranny slip. Will old fluid reduce the life of tranny? How about draining old fluid, swapping out filter and then putting old fluid back in? Any info much appreciated

No. Dual clutches don't actually have two sets acting on the same gears. One set engages with odd numbered gears and the other with even. They're one of the less reliable types of transmissions because they're complex and have more parts subject to wear.

Do the inner planetary runner gears (last one you pulled out at 7:44) in the U151 have the same weakness as the U140, where the bearing pin would unscrew itself/wear out? Hard to see in the video, but it seems to have a sturdier design. Here's a U140 with a failed inner planetary: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3TRpGqMjJp1jdk

Rear planetary pins don’t loosen up as frequently on the u150 models. Seems like all the u140 / u240 are the models suffer from the pins loosening from the carrier. I think Toyota / AW improved the carrier material and process when they crimp the pins. The Aftermarket will sometimes weld the pins to prevent pin movement.

After rebuilding a U140, I know what every part is in this transmission. Those are so burnt! My transmission died because the pins failed on the first gear planetary and grenaded. Luckily, I was able to get the replacement parts needed, and everything works great now. the U140 only has 3 pins and are the known failure point for it. The U151 has one more clutch pack, hence the 5 for one more gear. This is basically the newer version of the U140, but fixing all the problems it had. It's not that bad of a transmission. You just have to take care of it. Wow were those clutches smoked. Mine, at 185k miles, had great clutches in it. I replaced them anyway, but could have reused them.

I don't get how iterating reverse and forward motions damage trans. You shift to forward, disks (steels and frictions) are engaged (compressed), they rotate as one unit (because wheels are spinning very easily on snow so they don't cause disks to slip), no friction there thus no heat source. Same with reverse. How does it kill trans ?!

You’re wrong about the transmission fluid not getting cooled when the car is stuck. The radiator fan should have come on once the engine was up to normal operating temperature and that would have cooled the trans fluid, too.
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 Жыл бұрын
That's if the radiator fan is tied to transmission temperature and not engine temperature. Also the back and forth motion causes the fluid to rapidly heat up within the transmission... A tiny cooler like that isn't cooling off that much heat!
