Whenever I buy a used car with an automatic transmission, the first thing I do is to drain ALL of the fluid, dropping the sump pan and replacing the filter. This allows me to inspect for any particles in the pan and the condition of the filter. Then I clean everything up, replace the filter, pan gasket and all of the ATF (AW70 takes 8 quarts). Then, at 30K mile intervals, I only do drain-and-refill (4 quarts) with a premium synthetic ATF of the correct spec. This keeps the ATF in the transmission relatively new. I've found that if you don't abuse the transmission and drain-and-refill the fluid at least at 30K mile intervals, you will never need to replace the filter for at least 100K miles or more. NEVER FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM!

Wouldn’t dropping the pan only lose the 4 quarts too? Just like the drain and fill process? My fluid looks pretty bad and I want to swap it out, but from research I see the drain plug only takes out 1/3 of the fluid, which is why I’m thinking of doing a flush. The fluid doesn’t look great so I don’t know about a flush either.. they say the torque converter and lines hold most of the other fluid. What do you think?

@@Jacksongamma Several car manufacturers recommend doing a drain and refill, followed by a short driver and repeat at least one more time. This would probably be good if you know the car's maintenance history. Otherwise, my maintenance service technician and friend of over 30 years has recommended a drain and refill at 30K mile intervals of normal driving with full quality full synthetic fluid recommended for your transmission. This is what I've done with no transmission problems at all. Also, when changed regularly, the ATF filter does not have to be changed. Never, ever do a complete flush! Several mechanics have told me this.

Bolt head size and torque settings would have been nice to know.

A few questions for you sir, 1. Did you have the car running at all for this process? 2. Does this process also work for a 93 940 Volvo?( mine also has a drain plug) 3. Should I just let it sit there and drain for a hour or 2 then put 8 full qaurts in?

Hi there. 1. Not during the change, only after it was closed up to check the levels. 2. I don’t remember if you have the same transmission as I do, I’d check around a bit more. However, the general process will be very similar. 3. Drain should only take a couple of minutes. Measure what comes out, replace with equal volume, start the car and check levels. Fill as needed. Hope this helps!

what fluid do you use? can they be mixed?
@jonrasu2 жыл бұрын
Conventional wisdom says that fluids really should not be mixed if you're planning to run those fluids for their maximum life duration. That being said, these engines are really solid, and I would guess that you could totally get by for a few weeks with mixed fluid if need be. I just used the Valvoline max life. You can do a few google searches to learn about these fluid grades and which is best to use for your engine.

ATF 33 is the right one for volvo manuals of this generation so it stands to reason that it is the same for autos for practicalitys sake and dealerships not having to stock multiple fluids. If in doubt use the lube advisor from your favourite oil company. Total is a good one for european cars.
