An interesting introduction to the Māori culture. I remember that when the film first came out many people here in Aotearoa New Zealand working in tourism marketing and promoting the country overseas were worried about the potential impact on the tourist industry. Similar to the concern that many Scottish leaders had when Trainspotting came out.

I remember as a kid being terrified of geckos because of all the korero I had heard about them, but I also remembered my nanny who knew the bible word for word in te reo and english, she held my hand and walked me through an area where geckos were numerous "I'd even have nightmares about this area" I remember her saying a karakia under her breath and being in awe watching them completely scatter from us, that was a beautiful moment. When she passed her little whare was burned down by her neighbours, what compelled them to do that I'll never know

If this is the film that the directors were talking about at our Orakau memorial celebrations last year, we were told that some of the actors acted as their ancestors. Has such deep meaning for many of us.
