Doing it all exactly but when changing the opacity in the layer to knockout=shallow and opacity 0% I don't see thru the text but see gray and white boxes as though the main image not showing thru.

I did everything mentioned here step by step until up to the point where you free transform the finished text. When dragging the top and bottom handles inward towards the text to resize the border, it shrinks the text till it disappears. How do I solve it? Thank you for your help!

Fun idea. And I really appreciate the problem solving you did as I'm sure I'd do exactly that and wonder how to fix it. Why does putting the text and border into a group solve the problem? Shared the video.

Hi Leslie, thanks for sharing the video and for your great question! Normally when you enable the Knockout option on a layer, like a Type layer, Photoshop will punch a hole through any layers between the Knockout layer and the Background layer. But if you place the Knockout layer into a layer group, Photoshop will only punch through the layers in the group. It will stop at the first layer below the group. That's why, in the video, it stopped at the image on "Layer 0", since "Layer 0" was below the group. I hope that made sense.

Are you using Photoshop CC 2019? Adobe changed the way Free Transform works in CC 2019. To move a handle without moving any others, you now need to hold your Shift key as you drag the handle. Dragging a handle without holding Shift locks the aspect ratio and moves all handles at the same time. I can't get this to work. Following every step carefully multiple times. When I lower the fill opacity (blending options) to 0, the text AND the image below disappear. I am adding text over top a collage of many photos all grouped together. I'm thinking this may have something to do with it of I have a setting somewhere that is off. Can anybody help? Is anyone else watching this in Sept 2019?

Adobe changed Free Transform in the most recent versions of Photoshop. You now need to hold Shift as you drag a handle to unlock the aspect ratio.

I have done it with an another method but i did nt understood it. I saw it somewhere :P.. 1. First layer is main image(unlocked) 2. Second layer i made to multiply some colour to that image. 3. Third layer is an ellipse. 4. The fourth one is text layer which i wrote on the ellipse. Then i created a smart object by copying 1st and 2nd layer and put it on the top then i selected that layer and drag that layer to the text layer by clicking alt simutaneously. And bam i got same results. Please explain how that happened ?

Holding Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and clicking directly between two layers is a shortcut for creating a clipping mask. It clips the top layer (or smart object, in your case) to the layer below. You can release a clipping mask using the same shortcut (Alt / Option-clicking between the two layers).
