Transperineal Ultrasound - UVM Medical Center

Dr. James Wallace, Health Care Services Lead/Radiation Oncology at the UVM Medical Center, describes transperineal ultrasound, a non invasive procedure that helps guide where the radiation is aimed before and during radiation treatment for prostate cancer. We use ultrasound because it shows soft tissue imaging in the prostate gland where we can't normally see it through x-rays. The procedure is non invasive and takes only about 10 minutes or so. The post below reminded my of another exam. Years ago, had a sports injury, got dinged in the testicles, had been to this doctor previously for a sore throat/flu. Went to her office, she was available, it was summertime so I only had a t-shirt and shorts on, no underwear. Explained what happened, she told me to remove the shorts, the t-shirt was extra long so I took that off too. She had me lay on the table, was fully nude, so she checked my testicles, and she told me the injury was not serious, to use ice for the pain. Since I was there she asked when I had my last exam, told her it had been more than a year, so she did a head to toe exam, including getting on my knees for a prostate exam. As she was older and had her practice for years, I was not embarrassed, it was the most involved exam. Thinking about going to see her again, she is still practicing.

A female ultrasound tech I used to work with would get visibly irritated when a male patient would ask for a male tech or even displayed any hesitation at having an intimate scan. When asked if she would be embarrassed if a male performed an intimate procedure on her, she replied, "I will never let a man touch me!"

Well why is she do irritated. It seems like shes in this field just to Google at men's genitals.

Males in the ultrasound world, are shunned from doing intimate scans on woman. The set of double standards in this field is SICKENING. I've had 9 scroral ultrasounds all done by woman. I once asked for a male, and they told me it would be a 6 week wait, to reschedule for a male tech. They know it's embarrassing for men. They just DONT CARE. I've never even been asked, If I wanted same gender care.

Yes the prostate knee to chest position is the best also the prositis test culture test was also done proffesionally 1:20 1:20 1:20

Bill C, just went through this. Had a scheduled ultrasound for prostate, went into the exam room, took off my pants, and sat on the exam table. A young lady that looked about 18 came in and told me she was going to do the ultrasound, and then mentioned I needed to remove my underwear, which was a surprise. So I took off the underwear, and had I been thinking, should have grabbed one of my socks and put it over my package. So I laid back on the table and she did the scan. It was painfully quiet during the scan, and all I could see is her moving the wand around, and seeing my penis, and being nervous, only increases my embarrassment. The silence was painful, neither of us saying a word. She wrapped up and I got dressed and she left. Think I would not have been that embarrassed if the tech had been an older woman.

I hope I never get sick like this. The level of privacy and respect men get from the opposite sex compared to female patients isn't even on the same planet. Truly shocking what we call equality today.

Give the poor men male techs do these procedures. Total disrespect for a persons dignity and modesty.

They are medically qualified to do it Just like male doctors can deliver babies and pap smears etc. If he had a problem, I'm sure they would accommodate him.

I agree 100%. I noticed this male patient has not one but two females overseeing his procedure. Provide male technicians for sensitive male exams. I seriously doubt if this guy were given an option.

Its all about the practitioners proffessionalism, people can be uncomfortable with anyone without bedside manners

@@hertersarel No, not all. studies are few but the one's that do exist show that at least 26% of men and 50% of women are uncomfortable with opposite-gender personnel performing and witnessing intimate procedures. Some studies even show higher percentages. We need to stop assuming that all patients are comforted by our "professionalism".

They usually don't bother to ask what gender you would be more comfortable with they automatically assume they have a right to deny you that choice . Personally I don't really care till other people enter the room . I had a procedure done on my testicle last year and there was several other nurses just watching. I might need it to be done again this time no spectators will be allowed in the room.

Healthcare doesn't have boundaries or sexual overtones, division. They are all professionals, although some prefer same sex. Myself, most of my doctors are female including my urologist who is actually of middle eastern descent. It doesn't bother me in the least. I know she's professional and also being in another country besides her own that discriminates and do not allow women to practice medicine let alone on a man she is very confidant. My prostatectomy went exceptionally well with speedy recovery with no problems and the whole surgical team were females of either Hindu or iranian.

As is the case with most men, they are too afraid to speak up when they don't like something when it comes to medical & the medical community knows this full well as they exploit this flaw in men every day. As a sign of respect of this man's dignity, did ANYONE at the Vermont Medical Center offer this gentleman male techs so his privacy could be better protected? Or did you do like 99% of the medical community does when it comes to their male patients & just give them the bulls**t line oh well it's got to get done & we've seen it all before as we are all professionals here? I'll wager if that was a healthcare employee that worked their getting tested by their peers, their attitude would be not where I work. It's okay for everyone else but not you people. BS Raffie
