If someone was to tell me they're a christian, I wouldn't call them an atheist or a muslim. That would be stupid, and kinda rude, even if I personally am not religious. Even if someone is a complete transphobe and doesn't believe the scientific proof of genders being a thing, like this lady who compared gender theory to a religion, then out of respect for other people's beliefs, they still should respect our pronouns. Her logic doesn't add up.

It really annoys me how he was asked to define a woman and he said "women generally are capable of making babies" because not only was that the first thing in his mind when thinking about women but it also doesn't define it since it doesn't encompass the entire concept It's like if someone asked me to define snakes and I said "well they are generally reptiles with less than 2 legs and arms" which could be the same definition of most reptiles

@@Schnort I think that the biggest problem is being forced into gender roles. I identify quite strongly as a woman, but I hate when people assume that I’m not a hardcore gamer or that I love makeup. My pronouns and identity don’t determine what I can like, achieve or become, and our society needs to learn that.

I'm not doubting Jamie's science, but there is certainly an extent to which gender is socially constructed, so, yes, there is reasonable argument that gender shouldn't exist. That doesn't mean you MUST identify as the sex you were assigned at birth, but that that sex doesn't actually mean anything socially.

Part of that is people saying that "gender is social" or that "gender is a social construct." Which implies that gender is the same thing as a gender role, and thus that your gender is 'really' your gender role, so it 'shouldn't matter' if you are misgendered, or that you have physical dysphoria. It's basically an attempt at a "gottem" based off the faulty idea that gender, gender role and a biological sex are all 'really the same thing.' And thus that transgender people 'don't exist.' Or that if someone is transgender but doesn't blindly conform to 'gender roles,' for their identifying gender, they 'aren't *really* trans.' It's why I've had an ongoing issue with people saying that gender is a social construct in an attempt to support trans and NB rights- whether people realized it or not, the idea that "gender is a social construct and thus not real, so being trans (and/or) NB is fine" is just as much an invalidation as a validation. Because if gender is a 'social construct' and thus 'not real' it basically lends to 'then there's no reason for you to transition if your gender dysphoria doesn't exist.' But a fair amount of people who try to be allies have become rather mad when I've tried to point this out, because... I guess it is different than what they first learned? shrugging Gender is a fact, as it relates to someone neurology, meaning their literal brain. Gender *roles* and norms are a social construct that consists of expectations placed on an individual based on their interpreted gender and sex. It's malleable, not based in any fact of reality, and can even differ between cultures. Sex is a set of physical traits that ranges across a spectrum, but has historically been oversimplified due to lack of scientific progress, religion and imperialism based oppression, and human fear and hatred of things that are outside the norm to any degree. Or in short, people saying that gender is a social construct leads to some intense and problematic misunderstandings.

Am I correct in my perception that gender is inherent, but gender roles are the social construct? I think I'm just simplifying what you just said, but but I'd lije to get it clear in my own head.

The problem is some of them do try to force their religion on people. I had a person literally chase me to my car to ask me if I knew about Jesus. There was no provocation she just made untrue assumptions about me because I was wearing a Dark Side star wars shirt. Then when I told her that I already had religion and didn't need hers she tried to hold my car door open, to keep me from leaving, while screaming at me that Jesus love me and I should go to church with her and be saved.

@@tabby6284 My 12yo daughter was literally forced out of our home town because she reported her health teacher for saying god designed women as sexual objects or men and a bunch of anti lgbt stuff. That happened last year in the US. She got many death threats and literal teachers were sharing photos of her home. I’m pretty confident in saying religion being forced on people is a bigger problem than someone asking to be called they.

It's so ironic, because literally no one forces HRT on them, on the contrary, coming from a Catholic country, I got forcefully signed up for that cult by getting baptised as an infant, and then force-fed religion until my late teens even though the part of family I was raised by isn't religious in the first place, it's just this ever-present pressure from the society, and the fact the Church can't mind its business and is trying to creep into your life at every step.

There's a difference between forcing religion on someone and requesting that they respect someone's correct name and pronouns. Forcing religion is intentionally making someone feel guilty for not believing in God or for not following the Bible if they do believe in a higher power (the Bible isn't meant to be taken literally). Requesting respect from others, the same respect that everyone deserves and requests everyday, is basic human decency. I hate when people say "real women have xx chromosomes, the ability to have children, etc." it's not only so transphobic but also demeaning to cis women who don't qualify their genetic and reproductive standards. on top of that there are so many biological challenges to their opinion of how gender is "BIOlogical" and "NATural". for example, Turner's syndrome, A genetic disorder in which AFAB people have a missing or broken x chromosome resulting in infertility and small stature. another example is hermaphrophrodites people with a genetic trait in which they can produce both gametes. and im sure there are more gender-tripping life lessons Gods created for those imbisils.

@@slimetank394Intersex refers to Differences of Sexual Development where the genitals, chromosomes, hormones, or any secondary sequel characteristic does not align with typical binary ( male or female) characteristic. " intersex" is a more polite/ accurate word for "hermaphrodite" (which some consider a slur/insult.) Basically, someone that is intersex isn't male or female, or is a combination of either, to varying degrees. It happens about every 1 in 1000 or 2000 births

And Jordan Peterson clearly hasn't taken any biology beyond kindergarden biology, chromosomes do not determine genitalia, hormones do and it is possible for an XY person to come out with female genitalia and indeed you have both male and female internal genitalia (wolffin and mullerian ducts) as a fetus (until the hormone thing). This is literally basic physiology and while I'd guess most people don't know it, anyone with any background in medicine or a related field does.

Yes! I was just reading about some of that! The xy with female genitals is basically because of a gene that is mutated so that it doesn't respond to hormonal influences during prenatal sexual development (I can't remember the word but like when the organs go to the one determined by chromosomes). Biology is truly fascinating. Sorry, I guess I'm a bit excited about genetics and how they affect people.

This really happened to me. My university teacher called me Natalia, although my name is Julia. It was funny the first time, because only two girls from our group went to her class, and both were named Julia (there were 10 boys and 3 girls in the group.) I corrected her, then it happened again, I corrected again. At one point we had a class with several groups (50+ people) and she called me Natalia, then at first she was indignant that I did not react, and then she was indignant when I loudly repeated that my name was Julia. The next time I corrected her, she simply told me that she was not going to change, and I had better respond to Natalia, because she is not interested in the fact that IT IS NOT MY NAME. The funny thing is that 3 years before this situation, I started writing a book where the girl was not called by her name, and I was afraid that it was too unrealistic. I always wonder if they'd get really upset in a situation where they would for some reason have to learn my language (Finnish). The Finnish language doesn't have gendered pronouns and in your day-to-day friendly informal talk people usually refer to a third person as se (literally "it"). @@Siilikeiju Same in Hungarian. We don't have gender pronouns, only "ő" (lit. they/them), so you will only know who we are talking about when a name or words like woman/man are mentioned. In fact, MOST languages around the world don't have gendered pronouns either. I know that in Chinese for example, you refer to everyone as "tā" but you only know which gender it technically is if you see the words written down (她 for she; 他 for he/can also be used when the gender is not important and is the character used when there are multiple people). Then there are the languages that have a bunch of gender pronouns for different types of gender expressions. I might be wrong in this because I also only know it from hearing from a native American person, that they have multiple pronouns for let's say a stereotypically "feminine" woman is called something else than a "masculine" woman. But transphobes just want to spew their bs so it doesn't matter.

I'm just a beginner and even though the first year I was taught by a native Chinese speaking teacher (which is why I was confident in mentioning it because I know this much at least), but she didn't explain all the things. Somehow it doesn't surprise me that they added +1 way of writing the pronoun bc of westerners 🙃🙃 At the same time, I wish they didn't, because why would any language need to be changed just so some other people won't have to fuss about what to call you? Especially a language as old as Chinese? Most English speakers can't even tell that the names in Chinese are reversed.

When I first came out to my dad as nonbinary, he said he didn't expect me to believe in something based on feelings (I'm generally more logic, science, and evidence based in my assertions). I had to explain it to him in this way too. He has depression and it's real even though it's easier to explain in terms of feelings than brain chemistry and he has no real physical evidence to show for it. There is evidence that nonbinary people exist and scientific theories about why they do, but as an individual it makes the most sense to talk about it in terms of how I feel.

Ok, I just want to say this.. Chromosomes have literally NOTHING to do if you're biologically female or male. Every single law in the US restricting reproductive health, sex education, and anything to do with sexual orientation or gender identity is based on specific types of religious beliefs. They're literally using their religion to regulate other people's rights and lives. That is incredibly different from asking people to be respectful of someone's gender and pronouns. Been a while since my genetics class, but the sex chromosome possibilities I remember: XX - phenotype female XY - phenotype male X0 - phenotype female, Turner’s Syndrome resulting Y0 - embryonic lethal XXX - phenotype female, can’t remember what this is called, but I believe there are medical issues as there is with all trisomies XXY - phenotype male, but again with consequences of an extra chromosome For those that don’t know, phenotype is basically what traits are seen, like the colour of your hair - thought that is determined somewhere along the other 22 chromosome pairs that code for a person. Meanwhile on the gender phenotype end of things, yes there is what we call male and female, but there is hermaphrodites (presence of male and female genitalia) and ambiguous genitalia. Bottom line: biology is a very complicated thing, it often goes off what we might consider script. And for all it has been almost 20 years, I am still upset at my profs for not showing up for what was supposed to be the lecture on monozygotic twins and homosexual flies, because fascinating. I feel I have gone off topic, but anyway, point was even the ‘simple’ gender markers, as Jamie pointed out, aren’t so simple, and then there all the other factors involved…

That behavior is super common among conservative Christians. They believe themselves to be constantly prosecuted and victimized (nobody except other conservative Christians prosecuted western conservative Christians in a very long time) and get offended when other people don't play along and put their self-perceived victimhood on a golden podestal. "Why was he avoiding the question in the beginning?" Because pretending not to understand why they're wrong is the foundation of their whole grift. If they don't understand the subject, then they can "just ask questions" and then claim that no one is able to answer those questions, because they're purposefully ignoring all of the people who do answer them. So when someone asks them to explain their position directly, they have to first pretend that the question doesn't make sense, or their position completely falls apart.

When I came our a a lesbian she said "I know" when I told her I was questioning my gender she said "I know" Anyways just felt like sharing a wholesome family story down here. The whole “trans men/women aren’t real men/women” honestly makes me want to cry. I’ve been told that I will never be a real man because I enjoy dressing in feminine things, mainly hoodies and skirts but I’m also mostly seen in black hoodies or jeans and sweatpants. People have said I will never be a real man because of how open I am about my feelings. I was crying in front of my friends one time and a cis guy walked past and said “Y’know no one will ever think you’re a real boy if you keep being a cry baby.” People spent an entire semester calling me slurs after I was outed and I never once let myself cry in front of anyone because it had been so pounded into my head that I couldn’t if I wanted to pass. There were a lot of things that made me stop thinking before crying and I’m still not to the point where it can just happen, but I’m better for it. I’ve been feeling a lot happier cause I’m just being me and not caring who sees.

Another thing is that the idea of gender we have now days is not unique: a lot of ancient cultures, oriental cultures and certain indegenous cultures had a different idea of gender that included more than 2 indentities.

Curiously, a lot of these extra gender identities were very ideologically close to 'binary trans man' and 'binary trans woman', and a fair bit of stuff to cover intersex, androgynous, nonbinary, or similar-concept individuals as either 'gender 5' or 'genders 5&6'. So basically, 4-6 culturally approved gender identities is not uncommon at all.

In some cultures, they were always amab and were required to wear "women's clothes." In others, they were required to _always_ wear at least one article of "men's clothes" _and_ one article of "women's clothes". In some culture, they were expected to _only_ marry men. In others, they could marry both men and women. [However, universally, 3rd-gender people _could never_ marry each other.] And those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. (I read about this stuff back in the 1990s.)

@Kazik Ek "Two-Spirit", BTW, is a term invented in the 1990s by LGBT Native Americans to reclaim those older roles. However, in the 3 decades since then, the younger generations are going back to their own Nation's words for their Nation's particular form of 3rd-gender. The term, "Two-Spirit," they say, is generic, invented, and therefore not very appropriate, they feel. OTOH, the term, "Two-Spirit," has become a term used in academia. Prior to the 1990s, academic research into North-American 3rd- and 4th-genders … when it was done _at all_ … used a term that was basically a 17th-Centuy version of the f-slur. There's a book that I have, "The Spirit and the Flesh," from around 1990(ish) that makes an effort to say, "We're using this insulting word because (a) it's what the kinda-homophobic earlier research uses; and (b) there's no alternative term. So we're stuck with it, even though we _really don't_ like it." If that same book were rewritten in a new edition today, I would totally expect "two-spirit" to be used instead. Wow. I was so proud of myself the other day. A nonbinary person came on a late night show and my husband was all not into it. He was making fun of them, and I corrected him. I explained what I knew and I used the proper pronouns, and when I messed up, I corrected myself. When I was done, he was a little more curious and a little less judgmental. “They/them isn’t proper English” …. 🙄 Heres the rebuttal I use that a CHILD could understand: I remember back in preschool they would pick a new kid each day to be line-leader, and the teacher would describe the person and you had to sit down if you didn’t meet the description. Eg, “this person is wearing a red shirt. THEY are wearing shoes with laces. THEY wear glasses.” And so on. And guess what, only one person was line-leader, **because it’s grammatically correct to use they/them as the pronouns to refer a SINGLE person without specifying gender** 🙃

How I've explained this to my brother who genuinely doesn't get being trans because its not something he's expirenced. "You are disabled imagine if they amputated your legs when they stopped working and you said you wanted prosthetics and someone said you can't have legs you were born without legs so your arnt allowed to be a leg person.
