Mike, I'm so glad that you're not insane... however, I'm not so sure about myself at this point (but that's another story). 🤨I can't wait until you get Shelley's pretty red Lace Leaf Japanese Maple all settled back into her proper place, in that protected area by your new home. I hope you save the seeds from that cute tree and grow more Japanese maple babies from Shelley’s tree. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much luck growing Japanese maple trees in my Zone 5a landscape. So far, 6 different varieties have winter killed in my yard, and one of those was 6 years old. Knowing myself, I’ll have to try again in a year or two. FigBid. But make sure you vet the source. You can do that by becoming a part of some of the fig Facebook groups and getting a feel for good honest people. It takes time but don’t be in a hurry. Also, start with some solid varieties that grow well and fruit in your area. Nothing worse than buying varieties that die to the ground every year and never fruit. Unless you’re going to grow in pots and start them early in a garage. That’s a whole separate ball of wax.

I must say, that lovely little maple may not like it when you move it back to where it was. The reason being, that you put it under the trees where there was a great deal of natural mulch and loads of compost. You will be returning it to a place where it does not have that compost to help it grow and compost is its preferred nutrient diet. I'm sure the soil under your big trees is quite dark where the soil near the house looks like it lacks nutrients.

I wouldn’t bring them inside. You might get lucky but chances are they’ll either try to leaf out long before the roots come or they’ll just dry out. Bottom heat outdoors and a lot of patience would be your best bet.

2 things: 1: Can we get a follow up video regarding those big Logs you transplanted as cuttings that you suggested turning into Bonsai a couple years back? 2: I saw some videos recently and they could be fake, or they could be real. People were “supposedly” cloning seedless Banana trees from the stem of a banana. I mean… in principal it doesn’t sound completely crazy… it’s not much material to work with, but that is technically a branch that your bundle of bananas was connected to, right? So what if you were to buy a bundle while they were still green, cut off all the bananas but one with most of the stem intact, cut the brown off, disturb the surface a bit, add rooting powder, and plant it with the green banana sticking out of the soil? I don’t know if the chlorophyll in the banana and the moisture in the soil could potentially keep the banana fresh long enough for some roots to form before it completely rots. From the videos I’ve seen, it looked like the new growth came from the same area as the roots, but some of those videos looked pretty convincing. They were straight up rinsing off the roots at one point and they didn’t look detached or anything. I know you like experiments, so maybe it’d make for some interesting content, using a banana as a cutting, lol.

I've never done and propagation with bananas so I can't really comment on how well it works. It would make an interesting video though and I always love doing different things that aren't mainstream. As far as the "bonsai" logs, they're still growing. I had plans to up pot them, prune and start shaping them, and do an update video last spring. None of that happened. The house consumed me and as you know, the gardening videos fell to the wayside. I do plan to get all this going again and making an update on those plants.

I’m planting a row of 13 excelsa red cedar trees and plan to spread casoron before laying down mulch. How far away from the trunk do you keep the casoron?
@MikeKincaid7911 ай бұрын
I spread Casaron right up to the trunk. Also, I apply it after putting down the mulch.

Hi Mike, any advice on propagating citrus? I am in the tropics, warm and sunny, yet it takes 6 months to grow 1/2 inch root. I don't add fertiliser to the medium. What can I do to make it root faster?
@MikeKincaid799 ай бұрын
I don't have experience with citrus, since it doesn't grow well in my area, but bottom heat will usually speed up rooting.

Are you in the southern hemisphere and headed into summer? If so, I'd give it most of the summer to root well on the tree. If not, start earlier in the spring/summer to air layer those trees.

@MikeKincaid797 ай бұрын
Are they in sealed cups? If so, you can slowly acclimate them to less humidity and eventually get the top cups off. Then give a little fertilizer and get them under fluorescent lights. That should perk them up. Or maybe a well lit window.

Hey Mike I have a good idea about a fig video if you have the time for that in the future ,can you try to root a 1 node fig cutting? Because there are many of us who have rare expensive cuttings and I was wondering if it works ,soinstead a 3-4 node cutting to have 4 smaller cuttings started from just one node,that would be amazing ❤
