I've got a few globe artichoke plants in the wrong spot so have decided to transplant them to my perennial bed of asparagus, artichokes and strawberries. They'll need some mulching afterwards so I'm going to harvest the comfrey that lines the edge of this bed.

Who needs to go to the gym when you have a garden, you are so strong and fit Linda, gotta love that comfrey

Yes! That’s exactly what I say!! My fitness is definitely building. The comfrey is great but I seriously feel bad for the native bees - even though there’s lots more flowers for them!

Planted Comfrey last year as root cuttings, touchwood it'll grow back once spring warms up a bit here, I wanted it to use as a liquid feed for my veggies..

Comfrey grows really well here - not sure if frozen soil affects - I don’t think so given what I’ve seen on KZbin! Good luck with it greening up!!

Comfrey is hardy to zone 4 so unless you live in still colder climates it'll start sprouting in the spring again.

My teeny purple asparagus seeds have just sprouted and the pink and white strawberries have their first leaves . I can't wait to plant them both. No Mary Washington asparagus is up by the looks. Ill replant them. I intend making their bed with comfrey throughout too. Also , I waited until the next lot of Tigerella toms were soft and very ripe this time and added them to my salads the last 2 days , they were delicious. I think I was eating them too firm . Soft is the way to go . Seed saving now with them as well. How old are the asparagus you have there? I'm a newbie to them , trying to learn as I grow . Thanks for sharing your lovely garden . 💛

How exciting!! Baby asparagus are very cute and pink & white strawberries sound like fun! My asparagus are about 2 years old so still waiting for harvest. I’m a bit of a newbie with them too. So pleased to hear you’ve enjoyed the Tigerella - I thought I must have been missing out on really great toms if Tigerella were ordinary- haha

What type of snakes do you get there, maybe they like warmth from the rocks of the wall? The comfrey seems to make a great barrier too. I admire your perserverance with the aritchoke but I think you need a mini excavator for them LOL Mine seemed to throw plenty of seed for babies so that may be a good option for propagating?

The snake in the rock wall was a tiger snake & I think he was there for both warmth & the rodents that are around. I’m redoing the garden where I took the artichokes from so hopefully they don’t grow back from what I left!! These ones were all grown from seed !

@@huttonsvalleypermaculture Oh I hadn't thought about the artichokes growing from the root nodules left! Thank you. I thought it looked like a tiger, but wasn't sure if you get them there too. In my experience they can be aggressive and one of the things I am keeping in mind for situating things near the house (esp with a chi x terrier mix who also enjoys chasing the rodents). It's been a slow autumn start here, but I think it has come this week. It smells different. :) Thanks Linda

Neat to see the size of those artichoke roots! How old are those plants? Where I live, in New England, artichokes are treated like annuals because of our cold winters. I’m growing them for the first time this year.

Yes the size of the roots really surprised me! I was also surprised when growing from seed how fast they grew - perfect as an annual. Good luck with yours! Are you starting from seed or buying small plants?

@@huttonsvalleypermaculture that was one year of root growth from seed on your plant?! I am growing seeds indoors and winter sowing artichoke seeds outside, to transplant to the garden.

Hi Linda, have you thought about putting some geotech fabric over the rock wall for twelve months to kill off the grass that grows through it?😊
@huttonsvalleypermaculture
@huttonsvalleypermaculture Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael I have tried plastic in sections but not geotech - maybe I should check it out - the grass is a bit of an issue!! Thanks 😊

while you were cutting off the thick roots of some of the plants I was wondering, if they could also be propagated from those root cuttings. Does anybody know?

Yeah someone else had wondered whether the roots would continue to grow plants - I suppose I'll find out. Maybe I'll experiment and throw a couple in pots!!
