I grew some Papaya a couple years ago and I heavily mulched them with grass cuttings and they grew amazing and produced lots of big fruits. Problem is, I moved out of that house before harvest time and the new owner got all them Papayas. That was in High Springs. I had a few that survived the winter under some trees, otherwise Papaya needs two years to fruit and the winter always kills them up here in North Florida.

That is a bummer... but maybe try pawpaw? I want to get pawpaw but it may be too warm down here.

@@WildFloridian Thanks for reminding me. I am looking for a good variety of Pawpaw and also Elderberry and Mulberry. I want to grow some grapes and some pink Blueberries and lots of strawberries too. I am retired on 1 1/2 acre in Fort White. These dry spells are terrible because the soil here doesn't hold water and I have to water and water and water my plans in this dry heat. I figure mulching the devil out of the plants and trees is in order for sure so I am using lots of Perennial peanut hay and some locally available mulch in layers.

Were I use to work the papaya were 30-40 ft height lots of fruit on they then a tropical storm came through blow all the fruit down last September

Were those that you transplanted grown from seed? How long did it take for them to grow that tall? I’ve started so many from seed but they don’t do that well so far. Any tips for getting them to grow well from seed?

Those were from seed. They started to sprout last fall. They grew slow since they are in mostly shade. On tips from seed... Friday's video will be all about Papayas!

Where did you get your initial papaya plants? I don’t have any to move or propagate. Would a place like MRT have them, or should I look at small local nurseries?

A little critter pooped them into my yard 😂 And the seeds keep sprouting... even 18 months later. I see them at Lowe's and Home Depot sometimes. Most of my tropicals I pick up from a local place. You can also propagate from seed... just buy a papaya that you like. Friday's video will have more info!

Will papaya do well in north Florida Ocala zone 9a?

You will need to grow it early in the season to get it established and fruiting before the cold snaps. It will most likely make it through winter but will look very sad. You may need to do some cold weather protection.

They tend to look sad and droopy the first one to two weeks but will perk back up with watering every other day for 10 to 20 minutes

6 to 9 to 12 months. Most of my trees fruited and were harvested in under a year. 😄
