Join us for a fascinating webinar where Pawel Lojko (Technical University of Denmark, Irina Borodina´s lab), and Joseph Primeau (University of Alberta, Howard Young´s lab) present their groundbreaking projects.
Irina Borodina’s Group has developed an innovative workflow to overcome the challenges in characterizing membrane transporters. By integrating cell-free protein synthesis with solid supported membrane-based electrophysiology, they have crafted a cost-effective and technically efficient method. Utilizing nanodiscs for membrane protein synthesis within a continuous exchange cell-free system, they successfully expressed transporters that were then embedded into proteoliposomes. These were assayed for substrate specificity using the SURFE2R N1 instrument, paving the way for advanced transporter assays.
Howard Young’s Group delves into the intricate molecular structure of Ca2+ -ATPases from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Their research aims to elucidate the molecular underpinnings of calcium transport and its regulatory mechanisms. These ATPases are vital for pumping calcium out of the cytosol, a process crucial for physiological functions such as heart muscle relaxation. Understanding these mechanisms is key, especially since defects in calcium transport are linked to various heart diseases, including hypertrophy, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and end-stage heart failure.
