Great advice! As you know I brought three cats with me to Italy. One traveled with me in the cabin because she was known to have such anxiety. She did very well. I brought a small amount of cat litter and disposable pans in my carryon. This was so she could have a bathroom break during breaks in our travel. I bought a ticket for her, and on the third and final segment of travel, Atlanta, to Rome, to Lamezia Terme, a flight attendant came to my seat after we boarded, Air Italia, and said our manifest says you are traveling with a pet. When I boarded he greeted me and didn’t realize I has a small pet carrier. He said the animal has to go in cargo. I suppose my look of horror got his attention! I said she is here, under my seat, sound asleep, please let her stay with me. He was so kind and apparently saw the wisdom in the decision, and agreed. If he had opposed me, I was prepared to speak with the pilot. I paid for cabin access and would not be denied. Due to this cat;s history of anxiety, my US vet advised cabin access, not cargo. She made the 18 hour journey without sedation and was calm the entire way. This leg of the journey was only an hour flight, and she did well. When deplaning, I graciously thanked him for his kindness. A great example of Italian hospitality.

Great job convincing him Bonnie! It is really not good to have animals in the hold. I have heard horror stories.

Thank you for this comment explanation Bonnie! I have - well currently 2 cats of my own cats and 2 fosters. I have another 4-5 years before I retire and one of my cats is a senior so I may be bringing one or two. Of all the people I've seen discuss transporting your pet it's always dogs or if it's cats NO ONE has ever addressed the litter box situation. I was wondering how to go about that.

Lots of good information! I’ve been bringing my Jack Russell between California and Italy for over a decade. I will say over the years the process has changed significantly, so even if you have transported in years before give yourself plenty of time and be sure to review any changes. As a matter of fact I travelled from LAX to Firenze in mid-July and did not heed that advise. Due to COVID the USDA/APHIS services are no longer accepting appointments and the paperwork is submitted electronically to them by your vet and then they mail it to you. As I didn’t know about this change I nearly missed the flight! Thankfully I provided a FedEx label and I received the paperwork at 8am and flew at 3:30 that afternoon! Way too close! Also, a note on the European Pet Passport ~ do not let anyone other than your Italian vet write in it. I made the mistake of showing it to the Vet in the US and they added a vaccination and now it is a problem. Thanks again!

just to inform everyone according to Lufthansa website reguarding carry on with your pets, the maximum weight including the carrier is (17.6 lbs or 8kg) otherwise your pet will be in a cargo hold which you dont want.

Do I get the EU community Health in the US? Is it the same as the international Pet Certification?
@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC5 ай бұрын
I am not sure what that refers to. We got our pet passport in the EU so Gigi can travel without any issues throughout the EU. In addition we can take her to the US with just a visit to the vet and he completes a well dog form and gives her a dewormer. It is the same in the US. Without the pet passport you have to jump through the hoops with the USDA forms and what not. It is a huge hassle so if you are going back and forth a lot I would just get am EU pet passport. It makes things so much easier.

I’m wondering what length of time they have to stay in quarantine once arrived in Italy, particularly if every care was taken in the U.S. before departure. I have a dog and twenty cats. What do you recommend for mass transit of pets to the country? Someone on another video mentioned chartering a flight, though I assume that is quite expensive. Do you have any info on this type of situation? Thank you for making this video 🙏

Hi! Wow! That is quite a family! I have heard that pet transport services work ok but they will cost. What do you think about buying tickets for friends and family and having them take them over? I am not sure which will be more. Let me know if you find a good solution.

My dog got his rabies vaccine last year and we were told it was good for the next 3 years. He does need a microchip and online it says for italy, rabies vaccine does not count if it is gotten prior to the microchip. Would he just need to get a booster rabies shot done after getting his microchip to qualify to fly in less than 21 days?

Hi Karina, My best advice is to go to the airline website and follow the instructions there. if you do that you should have no problem. I hope this helps.

What about going for a pee for a dog? I don’t think my dog would last a 12 hour flight without going for a pee. I wonder how the pet transport company does it?
@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC4 жыл бұрын
Get a pet transport service. They see to all of this is my understanding.

If coming from the US and it's feasible, maybe leave from the East Coast and land in Spain or Portugal? It would shave time off the trip. If you can get an EU Pet Passport, then you can travel around the EU from that point to your final destination.

Just watched your video on pets. A private international charter with other people flying as well starts at about $10k. That is the starting point. Yikes,
@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC2 жыл бұрын
Yes but you don't need an international chartered flight just to transport pets. We've received quotes about 6 months ago for around 2500€ to fly a dog back to California, but that price may have changed since then.
