Times when engineers were given proper recognition.

I sailed on that ship in the summer of 1979 after it had become the TSS Festivale. One of the most memorable things ever in my life.

No mention of the people who actually do the work in the engine room, the junior engineers !

I was lucky enough to have sailed on this ship as my first cruise. It was then the TSS Festivale owned by Carnival Cruise Line. She was a fast ship and rode very well.

The grand old days when British ships were crewed by British people and not cheap foreign labour working for a fraction of the cost. A Chief Engineer is judged by the cleanliness of his engine room!😉

Agree with you. I still work at sea and service many different ships. Now everything is either India, China, Indonesia or Philippines. And the ships look and function like shit. And the smell in the accommodation is another thing, except Philippines as those guys are quite good at sea.

I work at sea now, I’ve seen a similar purifier for oil on a 1970’s anchor handler when u first was a 4th engineer. Now everything is turning to battery power. Fascinating change in the ship world

Union-Castle RMS Transvaal Castle, later SA Vaal, later Festivale. Now the video will appear in more search results. Some views of galley, dining room, open decks, lifeboats too. “The Ship and the Engineer” A BP Film.

The company certainly had fine ships. This vessel was much rebuilt in 1977- 78 before entering service with Carnival Cruise Line, so little of the original remained after that.

@@karireinikainen2876 Joseph Farcus, the Carnival corp interior designer, speaks a lot about the conversion of this ship in his latest book. Either way one looks at it, she was a magnificent passenger liner as well as a beautiful cruise ship. A successful conversion and a long sea going life.

Hi, you are absolutely right the photograph was taken in the generator room which include Ginger Mailer chief Engineer and David Keen junior engineer, when I was on the ship we called it the alternator room as she was an AC ship. I knew the ship well as I joined her in September 1961 when she was being fitted out at John Browns ship yard in Glasgow, I remained on the ship until February 1964. The Transvaal was a wonderful ship, and superbly built, experiencing no teething problems on sea trials and the maiden voyage in fact during my time on the ship we only had one shut down at sea when one of the alternator failed. Regards Don Stangroom. (Junior Second Engineer officer).
