I have a question. What happens to the particles during the action of the longitudinal wave? They get energy, then they move, but on the basis of which they return to their original place, even backwards, if they are no longer affected by energy?
@arrianah5080
@arrianah5080 3 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty late reply and I'm not sure about it either, but I think the particles are sort of bouncing off each other. Kinda like how a basketball would go back up when you drop it on the ground. Ehehe I'm sorry if this is unclear.

Overall tho, when a drum is struck, yes the longitudinal waves reach my ear, but isnt the skin of the drum vibrating up and down like a transverse wave? When a piano strikes a wire, or a guitar strums one, that wire is vibrating in a transverse faction. The sound is carried by the air (which is why there is no sound in space) to our ears in a longitudinal fashion. No?
