This is worse than jail. You get no release date - youve committed no crime. The doctor has ALL the rights - and he needs money. You are the source of income

You are right! Avoid nut houses at all costs! You have a loss of independence. You can count on verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. My ex-friend, who has some mental issues, found out about this the hard way. He told me that it was like a near death experience (NDE) where he spent some time in hell for a few days.

@michaelragusa5138 Making a blanket statement like that is very dangerous. If I didn't go to the psychiatric hospital, the times that I needed to, I would be dead. Literally dead, because I needed medical intervention... Not to mention I've known so many people personally, who psych words have saved their lives. Not all places are like this, and we've made leaps and bounds in terms of medical psychiatric care.

Leaving this on a top comment, in hopes that people will understand the nuance behind these issues, as this was not addressed in the new section. Since they just want to sensationalize this, instead of giving proper information that could actually help people. 2:59 This is the biggest problem, often times people are kept because there isn't a step down. People still need to be monitored, but they don't have a step down. (not speaking about this one.obviously clues something was wrong, since he was having residents fill out paperwork that he was supposed to be filling out), Other doctors I've spoken to are scared of letting somebody out, especially when they have suicidal ideation,if they end up *illing themselves. They can then be sued. Psychiatric care, and being forced into the hospital saved mine and many people I love, lives. Almost every single person in the hospital, doesn't want to be there. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be there. I think if we had more intensive outpatient, and partial hospital patient programs, things would be a lot better. Those step-down programs, saved my life. I was able to continue to get treatment, while working on myself in the real world. I wonder if there are a lack of places in this state, like that. Even when Sarah says that she is not depressed anymore, and is no longer suicidal and would like to go home, that's not enough, in MOST cases. They have to show that you are no longer suicidal, through engaging with treatment But, the difference with her cases she actually had an outside psychiatrist. Which means she should have been released within 24 to 48 hours at the most. I went through something similar, where someone called the police on me to be punitive. I was released the next morning, because I was working with an outside psychiatrist at that point. But in general if you don't have an outside doctor you're working with, and you've said that, they have to hold you. Then if you proceed to continue to freak out while you're in there, they're going to hold you even longer. Typically every time I've tried to k*ll myself in the past, I was always held for a week. The only times it was a little bit over a week, was when they could not find a step-down program for me. Which was necessary, for me to be released. Plus the more that you ask to be released, instead of focusing on treatment, the more they think that you're going to hurt yourself. There have been many times I've been in the hospital, and people are waiting on beds and that's why they're there. But this case seems completely different. I just wanted to note, when there are times that things may not make sense to outside people, but the person actually does have to be held. Even if they don't want to. I don't want the field of psychiatry to be demonized, or for people to not trust psychiatric professionals on a whole, just because of this bad apple. Just heartbreaking to me, that there's so many people I know in this comment section, who will not understand the context of this particular situation and will generalize things(as I've already seen). Which is very sad to me, I would have thought it would have been better if they had shown an example of when somebody truly needs to be held. Then people could understand the difference. It's a shame that the news organization didn't do that, and it seems like they just want to sensationalize things, instead of giving people the proper context....😢

While I agree with you 1,000%, I'll play devil's advocate. Before the 1970s, all it took was a doctor like this to say you were mental off your rocker and you were institutionalized just like this woman was. Terrible, we all agree. The alternative is what we have today, where a large percentage of the homeless population is mentally unstable, taking over streets, committing crime, defecating on the street and causing all types of issues. But again, in this case, it's clear the doctor found a nice little way to enrich himself and if it's proven that he never actually did anything to evaluate these people (with a second, independent person backing his findings), he should be thrown in jail with not release date given!

I was discharged yesterday from an inpatient psychiatric facility that I was forced to go to due to “policy and procedures”. I also have PTSD, was facing eviction due to financial struggles, and felt hopeless. I did not want to end my life. I did not want to hurt myself or anybody else. Held in the ER for 24 hours, forced to the facility for 72 hours and they were trying everything they could to keep me in there. It was absolutely traumatic. I feared they would keep me there for longer, I will NEVER seek emergent psychiatric care again-and I’m a Registered Nurse. This system is beyond broken and beyond repair.

If you’re looking for solutions, see if it’s physical, situational, or spiritual. Yes, we are an eternal spirit, but we do have a physical body that can have chemical, nutritional, or hormonal imbalances that can be discovered with a blood test typically and resolve with nutrition and physical activity. Situational distress can typically be handled with therapy including spiritual counseling, but truly spiritual soul issues, such as hidden trauma or even a demonized soul is very real. The simple solution is Jesus, but the spiritual process can take a lot of guidance, scripture study, and prayer. It’s nothing to be ashamed of even Peter’s mother-in-law had a spirit of infirmity. As a Holy Spirit, sooooo believer I often find people saying they don’t know why they’re telling me things, as they are trauma starts pouring out from deep within their soul or they don’t know what comes over them when they tell me, they don’t act like them selves. That’s because it’s not always just themselves. I’m now in special, if you want to know, the solution read scriptures start in the book of Mark then Luke if your a strong Christian, or Matthew and John if you need to start with the basics and get refounded on what scripture says that might be very different from what you heard from church. God is good, his solutions are accessible pray for the RIGHT help. God love YOU!

When he ended my medication, I became distressed, but not suicidal and not histrionic. When I went to ask him to restore my meds. He committed me against my will. I was stuck in the psych ward for a year. While I was in the facility, I was physically attacked on a number of occasions by other patients who were also imprisoned against their will. I have PTSD from when I voluntarily committed myself due to having a reaction to my medication. It was a holiday weekend and my psychiatrist could not see me, so they recommended I go in. NO ONE prepared me for the reality. They acted one way, then as soon as my husband left, they switched completely. They started taunting me, saying they have no idea if or when I will ever be let out, and if I left they would be forced to call the police on me. They forced medications on me. I was forced to shower with the door open, and when my husband came to visit I was practically comatose I was so drugged. Before they "let" me leave, they had me take a test that they determined my diagnosis on, despite me being DRUGGED OUT OF MY GOARD. It was also over 20k by the end of everything. Unless it is absolutely necessary, I do not and would not recommend ANYONE go to a mental hospital or psychiatric facility.

There's thousands of doctors in the United States worse than him, is the depressing thing about all this. And they work alongside good and bad nurses. The system reinforces itself while the patients are more vulnerable than they have been in the past fifty years. Try talking to a normal person about this and they'll look at you like you're saying there are evil firefighters out there who start fires. They just won't believe you. it is astounding to me any adult can have another adult committed to a psych hospital. be careful what you say to psychiatrists and family. they are not there to help you. i was incarcerated in a psych ward. my parents called and said i was suicidal. i was sad. but not suicidal. the police woke me up and threw me against the wall and handcuffed me. took me to the hospital. i was strip searched. given a gown that didn't close. my phone was taken. i saw no doctors. i was handcuffed to a bed most of the day. i insisted i was not suicidal. they said i had to spend the night. i was locked in a room with a plastic bench to sleep on and a thin blanket with holes in it. the tv could not be turned off or the channel changed. bc i said little except that i was not suicidal they let me go at 6am the next morning. said they had no reason to keep me. my psychiatrist was supposed to see me but couldn't make the time to come to the hospital. my psychiatrist threatened to put me back in there if i didn't "straighten up" and was treating me like a bad child. she said "i can take your phone and have you locked up anytime" i stopped seeing her. the psychiatrists are not good people. they push pills, they threaten to put you in the psych ward. they are not out to help you. i now see a pro bono therapist. we have made more progress than i ever did with the shrink. i don't trust psychiatrists for anything anymore.

The evidence can be blatantly obvious.....and trust that there are those (even outside of that agency) that will go out their way to leaving you holding whatever they initiated and instigated in your life (as lies don't just up and magically state whatever claim). It takes a person choosing to open their trap, to lie and tell tales. When itnl comes to behaviors as such, it was practiced and purposely perfected before everyone here existed (well a high percentage of us)......and that behavior was not coincidental. For some, it doesn't matter who they throw under the bus. All it requires is someone needing them/coming to them.....and they will run a marathon with their stupidity. A woman once told me as we sat in Starbucks, that a lawyer friend of hers ended up committing suicide, soley based on what their psychiatrist told them. Maybe she was the psychiatrist that she spoke of.......I don't know. As her random need to tell me something as such, came across as odd. Folk be doing all type of shit, that once they've done it, it's obvious that they were clueless that whatever repercussions they encountered, would knock at ***their front door.

I went to an ER once for a case of diverticulitis (which I've been though several times before) which is handled with a large dose of antibiotics. The ER DR. said I could leave after taking 2 IVs of the antibiotics but when the second IV was almost done I called family to pick me up. I asked a (male) nurse if they could remove the IV so I could be released they told me that they were getting a room ready for me I needed to just be patient until it was ready. I told him I wanted to leave because someone was in transit to come get me. He said he didn't care and that I HAD to do what the doctor ordered. I told him that I don't work for the DR. and I want to leave. He then got angry, putting his finger to my chest telling me this WILL HAPPEN, like it or not. This of course was the WAY WRONG ANSWER and after I got loud enough to bring about 5 other nurses into the room they decided to have me sign a release form and discharge me. To leave they insisted I had to be pushed out in a wheelchair which that same nurse tried to THROW me out of it twice buy snatching it violently backwards but when he realized another patient was watching him do this he disappeared when they stood up. I tell this because hospitals don't care about people anymore, they just care about your insurance and their bottom line. Tell me if I'm the only one who feels that a trip to the doctor seems more like a run through the window at Mcdonald's than a trip to a paid professional who is SUPPOSED to treat me like a person?

I’m supposed to be in there to get help and the doctor would only see me for 30 seconds at a time asking generic questions or just telling me to keep taking my medication. If anything I have ptsd from my stay there. Doors always slamming shut by nurses, toilets designed to flush so loud like a screaming engine (how is that supposed to help psych patients?). Not letting patients outside after telling us that the sun is good for our mental health. Even prisoners get to go outside. That place has horrible negative energy lurking there. This is disturbing to me as someone who worked for a few years doing EMS ambulance transports in the area. I have personally taken hundreds of people from hospital crisis centers and emergency rooms around metro Detroit to Stonecrest, Harbor Oaks, and many other psych hospitals. The idea that I may have been part of this criminal doctor's kidnapping racket is deeply unsettling. Of course, I know the majority of people I transported truly needed help and I was part of that help - but people being held without medical reason for profit is obscenely unethical. This needs to be investigated across the board as it's almost certain that if one doctor found a way to turn this into something profitable, that others may have too. Add this to the never-ending list of why healthcare shouldn't be a for profit business in the first place.

The doctor and all involved should be charged with kidnapping. You are legally considered sane until proven otherwise. Only a court can take away your rights to make your own decisions. A lawyer should have been assigned to her from the very start.

@@williambobson3369 Look up the guardianship statutes in your state. you have to be assigned a lawyer before someone can take away your rights and there has to be a court hearing. I know that they can Baker Act you but there has to be probable cause or it's kidnapping. Be careful what you sign going into a mental health treatment facility because you don't want to be tricked into signing a durable power of attorney making them your guardian if a doctor (their doctor) certifies you incapacitated. If I considered going into a mental health treatment facility I would talk to a lawyer first to make sure I understood my rights.

A VERY similar thing happened to ME at ASCENSION HEALTH in WICHITA, KANSAS. I was kept for 6 days after an obviously false allegation that I was suicidal. I was literally on the phone with a local news station when a staff member grabbed the phone out of my hand, physically assaulted me & threatened to transfer me to a state mental hospital if I did not "settle down and act better". All kinds of derogatory, false claims are now in my medical records, some of which have prevented me from obtaining medical care! I'M PUSHING 65yr OLD, I AM AN ORDAINED MINISTER WITH A DOCTORAL DEGREE, AND I NO LONGER TRUST THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. I will no longer open myself up to the false 'medical care' here in Kansas.

In 2015, I was very nervous about my youngest daughter attending kindergarten so I started to see a therapist. She gave me a prescription for "haldol" to help with anxiety. I had a very bad reaction. I ended up hearing things very loud and almost similar to schizophrenia. I was mental health arrested. I was put on multiple drugs and then taken off them. There were over 15 different drugs I was given in 14 days, all multiple times a day and at high doses to keep me sedated. ECT was even suggested. The doctors are not on your side.

$60,000. There’s this thing that if you cannot pay it, the hospital could pay the bill for you. Hospitals are pretty much tax exempt/ are a charity. However (hopefully I’m not instilling false hope), I’d say to do more research.

“I felt kidnapped” is exactly how I describe my being held unnecessarily and against my will in a nursing home after surgery. I expected to go home from the hospital after 3 or 4 days, and the surgery went very well. Instead I was sent to what ended up being the nursing home from hell and was told their doctor (who I never once saw) could keep me there for even as much as nine months. 🥺 They also said that if I left, my insurance would not cover anything. I received no care and my recovery was sabotaged. The trauma I experienced while captive there was a nightmare. My expected 3 or 4 days away from home (where everything I needed for my recovery was) turned into 17 days being trapped, alone, without the medication post-surgery that was prescribed (had to fight for that too while in pain), and intimidated. Thank God I insisted on keeping my phone and was finally able to get my doctor and one of my former students to advocate for my release. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I 100% believe you about being forced to take medication. I was in a psych ward last summer near Philly, PA. Only for 8 days but if I didn't take the medication that I didn't want it would have been much longer. I also saw them force medication on ppl who wouldn't take it by mouth. Although I do have to say it was my stupid fault for going to the hospital 🏥 and saying I was suicidal. I wasn't at all was just feeling very shitty and didn't know what else to do.

I know your pain it happened to me too. Just from me being severely sleep deprived from working night shift and taking care of my new born child with no assistance. I slipped into a sleep deprivation psychosis and was admitted into a psychiatric facility. They played mind games on me and violated my rights for 2 months total. Every time I told them I was back to myself after getting adequate rest, they lied in my medical records and stated I communicated feeling suicidal so they could keep me there longer. When I told them I don’t need drugs, have never done them, and am functioning at my normal functionality, they threatened to put me on a psychiatric hold which allows them to hold you for as long as they desire.

@MikodoHizo What if you don't have access to a method of contacting such lawyers or have the compensation necessary to persuade lawyers to take on your "case". In the end, it's the same thing that motivates lawyers, that motivates doctors. That's what a "consultation" is, how much is their "case" worth based on my evaluation and experience?

Same thing happened to me in 1980. Large cyst ruptured in my sinus, went to ER Mercy Great Falls, MT with heart rate 200+, lose of motor coordination. Refused so much as blood pressure, locked on a psych ward without my knowledge or permission, thought I was legally confined for a week with zero consultation and refused all diagnostics. Mental stigma cost me my career fresh out of grad school, lost my home, possessions and had to leave the state to avoid further lockups, nearly died from adverse reactions to meds forced on me. Was NEVER able to get diagnostics on my sinuses after that, constantly had this bipolar hogwash pushed on me instead of real medicine. The US medical system is filled with quacks and insurance crooks. Left the US in 2005 and have real medical services finally. The cyst is still serious and has led to heart failure the last year, but here I have real medicine to help out.

@@JessicaO490Z Exactly? Really? I've never had symptoms of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. I do have 200+ MRI images of a massive cyst in my sinus taken 1998 after (approximately) 20 years failing to get one and the pain getting worse daily since. I snagged that by suggesting to a slow doctor I had an alien implant. How does that sound like your mamma. Oh, I get it, the major symptom of mental illness is denial. Right. Sorry about your mom. Madness runs in families, you knew that, though.
