The light gray wolf merges in and out of the forest along the old road, her paws padding through the snow leaving a tell-tale trough of prints behind her. Without warning, she leaps into the air at an awkward angle, her body twisting and cavorting before it slams to the ground; her leg encircled by a thin, metal wire loop piercing into her coat. She tugs and turn, biting and fighting furiously at the invisible force holding her, as if she knows exactly what is at stake. She struggles to the point of exhaustion, but eventually, she cannot fight anymore.
Sometime in the coming days - maybe even a week or longer - a trapper will come to find this beautiful female wolf. If she's still alive, she will be killed with a bullet to the head, or worse, bludgeoned to death with the back of an axe.
