Trapping GIANT Invasive Salamanders in FROZEN River!

In this video, we set out traps for mudpuppies, which are huge aquatic salamander species. In this watershed they are introduced, and their populations have flourished!

Haha, yeah I really ate it. In this case I only had the traps out for a few days when it was really cold, so I just risked it and it worked out

Yes I liked the video. The first trap had mud minnows, either creek chubs or fallfish, depending on where you are, possibly a golden shiner and maybe others, hard to tell. The one you threw off the bridge might have been a spot tail shiner but just a guess. Shiny minnows can be tough, especially not knowing where you were.

In this body of water they have existed for a long time, but recently genetic sampling has proven that they are actually introduced, even though native to other areas nearby!

That was pretty cool, seems like a reasonably ecologically healthy river system, if we use mud puppies and fish diversity as indicators. Is it in a reserve? Based on the graffiti on the bridge seems like it can’t be that remote

My cousin has 1 of those. It will literally eat anything he puts in with it. I'm not sure how long they live but probably for a very long time. Mudpuppies are illegal to keep in Maryland where I live but I'm not into salamanders other than taking photos of them. I had a pair of longtailed salamanders for about 10 years but I don't have any interest in keeping any more of them. They are much more temperature sensitive than toads are. Other than American toads I don't have much interest in keeping any native amphibians anymore. Once my toads are gone I probably won't get any more of those. I'm more into captive bred amphibians because they were never wild and don't have to go through an adjustment period and are highly unlikely to have parasites. Pac-Man frogs are my number 1 pet amphibian.

​@@WillRobertsonsWildlifeyep, I've pretty much lost interest in wild amphibians. I'd rather keep Pac-Man frogs, chubby frogs and White's treefrogs. I still have my five lined skinks. They are hibernating on my enclosed back porch. I can't wait until April when I can get them back outside. I'm gonna buy a 100 gallon cattle tank and set it up as an outdoor bioactive enclosure for my garters.

Invasive carriers over a militaristic connotation of invasion and destruction. You don’t need to overuse the term, especially with giant besides. It isn’t worth for a little more views to tarnish the reputation of a salamander that is unanimously considered harmless. Please reserve the term invasive only for species with a measurable negative impact and control measures against them, like for example out of range bullfrogs. This mudpuppy is just an introduced or non-native species.
