We live in a part of Ohio where the feral hogs are creeping up from the south. They are only one county away from us. We have seen pictures on trail cams of these vermin in our county, but, so far, they have not spread. The ODNR told me the hogs only cross into our county occasionally. This does not make me feel better.

@rogercochranBR5495 жыл бұрын
Mitch, the trap door is one of my own design. I'll make a short video of how it works the next time I'm out at the farm. The 30 ft. diameter pen is made of cattle panels 60 inches high with 4 inch squares. I've had some little pigs get through the 4" squares. I keep the feeder running year round and a trail camera recording the activity. When there's enough activity, I'll set the trap. Right now I just have a few boars visiting the trap.

@@gittesonne9193 , yes I understand they are a 'problem'. I respect the farmer's hard work, providing us with food, especially since I try to be vegetarian. However, as humans we are capable of coming up with better ideas and win win solutions for the farmers and the animals. It doesn't have to be an either/or. We don't need to hate on these innocent animals who are just trying to survive and be themselves. Especially, when as humans we can come up with innovative solutions and use our tech know how. We are intelligent enough to develop guns and traps but losing our heart for the animals. That's the main "problem", not the animals. There is a whole list of 'problem' animals slated for the eradication management mentality common excuse for cruelty. How we treat the animals is related to how we treat each other as people. The Nazis regarded Jews and others as rats to be eradicated. Even today people suggesting we eradicate the 'others'. Let us go beyond the eradication management mentality, and try to live with the philosophy of compassion and coexistance for all species. We can cage and fence them in shooting preserves, so it is also possible to fence them out. Recently scientists have also urged humans to try to be vegetarian due to deforestation and mass extinction of species. Texas ranchers are moving away from animal farming and switching to growing crops. Growing indoors is a good idea for the future, to keep the crops organic and the animals at bay. I am sure we can come up with other ideas than just killing our way out of 'problems'. Let us focus on growing and protecting the crops. The animals are intelligent enough to stay away and look for food elsewhere away from human settlements. We are just encouraging and enticing them by 'leaving the door open and food out'. They are not bastards, but beautiful creatures that are just being themselves and trying to survive. You can trap and fence them in, so it is also possible to fence them out, instead of inflicting pain and suffering on them. They have family and homes also. Their poop is actually beneficial for the soil in surrounding areas with soil erosion worldwide. They are so intelligent in fact, that if you release them from the trap, they won't come back to bother you. Just don't entice them with food and build better fences to keep them away. Much like leaving food in your house, and not covering the holes under the door, and then wondering why the mice are coming. A better cruel free method, is to contain the food, clean up the crumbs, and once mice leave, cover up the holes. Similarly, building better barriers to keep the wild boars away is a better way, than unnecessary cruelty towards their family. They also deserve respect. Go veg(etari)an, they even have veggie sausages, bacon, and pepperoni these days! As humans, thankfully, we have reached a point where we don't have to kill animals anymore. Let them live and be with their family. After awhile, they will get the message and stay away from humans, especially if no food. Let us be concerned about the whole tree of life, and other species, not just mankind. That's why scientists have recently also urged humans to be vegetarian, due to deforestation and mass extinction of species. Let us teach our children to be kind to the animals and not eat them. Let us be their friends instead of their tormentors. Let us have a world of compassion and coexistance instead of the eradication management mentality common excuse for cruelty. We are intelligent enough to develop guns and traps, but losing our heart for the other species. With our so called intelligence, we are destroying intelligent life here and are looking for intelligent life elsewhere. Check out the letter to the U.S. house of representatives by chief Seattle for a more wholistic world view. Diet for a New America, by Tom Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins ice cream chain, came out in the 1990's, is also a good one. Live and let live. Respect life.

Ramin, your post is ignorant and idiotic on so many levels that I'm not sure where to start: so- farmers should fence in every acre of their crops, when hogs have all the time in the world and are perfectly equipped to root under any fence? "Let them be with their families"? A sow can bear 5-8 piglets, average, three times a year; start with 2 sows and one boar and in a year you'll have 50 of them.. They not only destroy crops, they erode land, pollute water sources, and also eat everything from pine trees to baby deer and ground-dwelling birds' young.

Growing indoors is a good way forward to keep the crops organic and the animals at bay. They are intelligent enough to stay away and look for food elsewhere away from human settlements. The hogs have been in the southwest U.S. for five hundred years or more. In today's mixed world it's difficult to keep everything strictly native. They are now part of the ecosystem and biodiversity. If the gung ho hunters give the predators a break, they can keep a check on the other animals. Let us focus on growing and protecting the crops. There is still plenty of space for the animals to be themselves, in the uninhabited mountainous terrain, away from the farmer's crops. Let the wild animals hunt each other as they always have before guns and a balance will eventually be achieved. We are trying to build barriers to keep people away from rugged terrain of national borders, I am sure we can keep animals away from the farmer's crops instead of inflicting pain and suffering on them. You could have been them in this life or perhaps in the next. Have a heart for the animals, and stop using excuses for cruelty.
