Bradley, the lead singer, was a complete badass back in the day. His dad took him sailing around the islands of Jamaica, and that’s where he learned about reggae. He came back, and started sublime. There first songs were recorded by a friend who snuck them into his college class where he’d been going to school for music, and said that he’d help get them recorded. He shredded, and Eric and bud were so dope on bass and drums. They played with the band No Doubt that Gwen Stefani had, and she even did a song with him called “Saw Red” that’s on his album called “Robbin’ the Hood”. He had a bad heroine addiction though, and he tried to sober up because him and his wife Troy had a son, Jakob. He cleaned up for a bit, but ended up relapsing while on tour. After his death, Sublime went on to make the music video for Santeria “San - Tur - E - A”, where he was a spirit, but his dog Lou was kind of like the main character, because Brad had an inseparable bond with Lou or “Lou Dog” as Brad called him. I grew up listening to him, and have older friends that got to chill with him when he was around. I’ve talked to the new lead singer and guitar player Rome Ramirez a couple times, and he’s one hell of a dude too. He’s played with a band called Dirty Heads, who you should check out, they are killer! Listen to Lay Me Down by them, Dance All Night, Cabin By The Sea, Get Somewhere, or That’s All I Need. Much love ✌🏼🤙🏼

Not so much ska. They’ve always been classified as rock. That’s what they’re considered. Ska is rock with jazz instruments such as trumpets & saxophones & trombones. Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish are ska bands. Not sublime tho they don’t really have that typa shit. Occasionally they might throw in a instrument. Like for instance in their song “Chica Me Tipo” or the outro to “date rape”. But Sublime def always had that rock/reggae vibe so like if I had to personally categorize them I suppose it’d be alternative 🤷🏼♂️

@@nicholasgrimes6211 They are considered part of the 'third wave' of ska (ska punk). They absolutely are considered a ska band that took daytrips through other genres or combined it with their own. Yep, those are the three big genres they do (as well as ska), but you can tell Bradley really had the soul of the blues in him, too, and you also hear some slight influences from house and trance in a couple songs, and surf rock, as well. Basically all the shit that was permeating through SoCal in the 90’s. It’s insane how well Sublime fused all of it together. Anyone can combine multiple genres, but to do it so seamlessly that it all blends together to sound like its own genre takes a lot of creative talent and passion.

Give “Doin’ Time” a listen by Sublime, another masterpiece
@jamesflanagan76933 жыл бұрын
Sublime is AWESOME! They mixed multiple genres including reggae, hip hop and punk. You would probably really LOVE their song Doin Time! Sadly, their lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 shortly after they finished recording this album. This album went on to sell several million copies despite the band not being able to tour to support it. It spawned several successful singles.

The song is a metaphor written in dedication to Bradley Nowells son.. It sounds like its another typical song about some lady cheating on her boyfriend; it's much deeper than that. This is about a father cheating on his kid with drugs. Trouble is when he is sober he knows its cheating in the worst way. There is a lot of pain and sadness in this song, but at the same time there is also a tremendous amount of hope. Hope that he can overcome his own demons and just love his son. Sad that it was not to be. Sanchito/Sancho is his metaphor for the drugs he takes. The verse "Tell Sanchito that if he knows what is good for him He best go run and hide Daddy's got a new 45, And I won't think twice To stick that barrel straight down sancho's throat, believe me when I say that I got something for his punkass" shows Brads angst he had towards his addiction when he was sober. Rip Bradley Nowell one of the greatest to do it.

Quote from a site about the song from Song Meanings and Facts. “Santeria” is one of the biggest songs by the American band Sublime. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a man whose girl (Heina) abandons him and flees someone else. The jilted man, who desperately needs his woman back, finds himself thinking of using whatever desperate means he can to get her back from the man (Sancho) who stole her. One of these desperate means includes using voodoo or “Santeria” to try to get Heina back. Aside black magic, the jealous man goes as far as talking about shooting Sancho for stealing his Heina. According to him having shot Sancho, he would go as far as slapping Heina down for abandoning him.
