That's me with Puddle of Mudd. I knew Puddle of Mudd before they were like famous long before they were famous probably a couple years and Wes scantlin and I stayed friends his entire time being famous. I still have his phone number in my phone and call him like once every six months or so. Just to check in you know make sure everything's going okay. I dated his best friend in high school who was significantly older than I was at the time I was like 16 or 17 maybe and his best friend was like 30 I think. Something like that somewhere in that range. Which sounds super creepy and now it certainly is super creepy but at the time I was like sold he was a rocker and that was like something for me that was like a big deal because I was 16 and 17 and didn't have any rocker buddies so yeah despite the fact that the he was 12 or 13 or 14 years older than me I had a huge relationship with him that lasted like a year-and-a-half. Upside is I got to meet Wes scantlin and he and I are still friends so that's saying something. But God forbid if I ever had kids I would never let my sixteen-year-old even dare to dream about dating a 30 or 31 year-old ew ew ew LMAO

Sublime is from Long Beach, California. The band was three members: Bradley Nowell (vocals, guitar), Bud Gaugh (drums), and Eric Wilson (bass guitar) there music is mix of reggae and dub, Ska, punk, progressive rock, acoustic rock, hip-hop. On May 25, 1996, two months before Sublime released their self-titled third album, Brad Nowell just got out of a record company sponsored rehab, died of a heroin overdose after a show in Petaluma, California.

Ska - it's pronounced skah. One word. It stems from a blend of reggae, rock, and sometimes punk. A lot of Ska bands are a little more upbeat in feel - there's often horns. Sublime is unique in that their mainstream stuff tends to also have a hip hop element. But they started as more of a punk band. Ska is something that some bands easily fit into, like when you hear it you go oh that's Ska. But some are sort of on the outskirts of it, like sublime.
@patrickcraig8022
@patrickcraig8022 3 жыл бұрын
Ska is actually an earlier genre than reggae, and was Jamaican musicians mixing the r&b and doo-wop and American soul they were hearing with mento and Jamaican music. Rock-steady, lover’s rock, reggae and dub then evolved out of ska.

It still breaks my heart that Bradley (lead singer of Sublime) died RIGHT before this album was released. Sublime found fame AFTER they’d been disbanded by his untimely death. I’m so glad I was one of the young weirdo’s who loved those 90’s ska beach concerts and got to see and hang with these folks. Only saving grace to Sublime going platinum after Bradly died was that his infant son had that $$ to rely on. Always will remember sitting on Venice Beach with Bradley and Louie!! If ya don’t know…Louie was his beloved dog and features in many of their lyrics and samples💗💗💗

This song borrows from "Summertime" from a popular 1930s musical called Porgy & Bess. Also, the song is actually about something more than just a bad relationship his girl -- they had originally replaced the word "Summertime" with "Doin' Time," hence the title. However, the copyright owners of the original version withheld their permission to use the song until they changed it back to "Summertime."

You guys probably would like most of their stuff, same for anyone reading this far, but some more standouts: "Ballad of Johnny Butt" "Waiting for my Rucca" "Wrong Way" "Seed" "Work that We Do" "STP" "Right Back" "5446/Ball & Chain" "Great Stone" "Foolish Fool" "Ebin" "Same in the End" "Date R@pe" "40oz To Freedom" "DJ's" "Under My Voodoo" Also, the Stand By Your Van live album is criminally underrated and even older fans sleep on it. Ska is originally from Jamaica in the 50s (before Reggae). It has had several revivals or waves. What is considered the 2nd wave of Ska happened in the UK in the 80s with groups like UB40. The third wave of Ska was in the 90s on the west coast of the US which brought us groups like Sublime, Reel Big Fish, and many others.

Ate a lot of acid with this album in the late 90's.

I realize you have to do the original, but the official Wyclef Jean remix is a much deeper, occasionally creepier groove/vibe. Especially the part about holding her head underwater. And he highlights the "Rawwrrr".

8:03 the genre is Ska and they were the masters of it. No Doubt (Gwen Stefani’s band in the 90s). Same time period. Lead singer of Sublime ODed before this album released and they made it big.

I consider Sublime's genre to be Cali Funk, same as RHCP.

This song actually is a sample. It samples Herbie Mann's version of "Summertime" in addition to Beastie Boys. The drum beat is also a sample.

This is an interview with Ras MG (mentioned in the song) about how they pieced the song together. At the end it has Pharcyde rapping over the song, that was one of the remixes that came out after Brad died. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Wyhq2iqtKCh8U

Ok so it's either she is sleeping around spreading her love around but I'd always saw it like she spreads her love around being kind nice thinking of others and isn't like that with him takes it out on him

Ska! It's a genre of music that is an offshoot of Caribbean and reggae music. It started in the Caribbean and actually became popular in England along side Punk in the 70s and started to die off again in the 80s. Ska and Ska/punk made a comeback in the late 90s and early 00s in the states. Sublime is known for mixing elements of Ska, Jazz, Reggae and Hip Hop.

Ska is not an acronym, it's a style. Sublime is just Sublime. No genre. Elements of punk, rap, rock, reggae, ska, and more. RIP Bradley
