Trash Picked 16mm Film Projector : Bell & Howell 652 : Restoration Part 2 : 1st Power & Smoke!!

Yup, in this video, we are applying power for the first time to the Bell and Howell 652 16mm projector that I found in the trash / skip.

I love things like this. Great to see you've got it back to running and playing film again. Hopefully you'll be able to work the sound out too. The feeding mechanism seems a lot more complex than the one on the 1970's projector I have lol. The greatness of the internet managing to find a manual for a similar model.

The exciter lamp is supposed to only light up when the projector is in "Forward" direction. If you need the service/parts manual, Old Timer Cameras sells it. If you need to buy parts, Kevin Brown (Cine Repairs) in Nottingham is a Bell & Howell repair/parts guy. Some smoke you may have seen was from burning dust on the projection lamp.

You have to push down the top feed lever to engage the auto feed system.

Hmm... As mentioned, it uses a valve amp. Is there a volume control? It may be worth replacing the filter capacitors on each side of the pot. Also check the voltage between the speaker and the case, to see if you have any HT

As old as that thing is, I wouldnt bother with the auto load, most are pretty twitchy on a good day, turning the thumb screw out should allow the lens to swing back to get the film in the film gate. still a great video.

replace the caps in the audio amplifier and check the resistor values.
